I LOVED Zombie Island. It had my favorite type of animation from that era, and every bit of cinematic production felt weighty and relatable. As Mr. Billiam said, it felt like a horror movie with a bit of comedy sprinkled over it. There was so much realism and gravity to it that I'd forget I was watching an animation at times. Thanks to the 2D animation, it still holds up well to modern standards, so much so, in fact, that I was craving the art style and smooth in-betweeners to the point where I actively sought out a source to watch it a few months ago--thank goodness Netflix has some deal with the CW! I only recently discovered the reason why I loved the Hex Girls tracks in their debut movie... Apparently, I've had a voice actor crush on Jennifer Hale long before I played her as SHEPARD in the only non-puzzle shooter I'll ever love. I hear her voice, I cheer. Simplest constant in the universe.

Whenever someone says they hate Scrappy, or that Scrappy Doo was a bad character, my knee-jerk reaction is to look them in the eye and say "Ghoul School". The original cast worked in their normal format, but adding real monsters without the mystery approach meant their expertise would have been forsaken or overlooked. Inversely, Scooby and Shaggy are defined by their cowardice and thus would generally tend to flee at the first sign of something 'spooky'. Scrappy's confrontational demeanor and hero-worship of his uncle Scooby work to force Scooby into situations where he must overcome his fear in order to save someone he truly loves. Scrappy believes that Uncle Scoob can beat any threat, and thus will try to go head-to-head against the sharpest odds confident that Scooby will be there to protect him. And this is most clearly seen in "Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School".

Re-watching these movies I noticed something interesting (and honestly, a little disheartening). Fred & Daphne seem to be the only ones who are given a relationship that works out well in the end! In Witch's Ghost (which remains my favorite of the Scooby quartet), Velma gets a love interest in Ben but he ends up as another addition to the "Tim Curry Bad Guy" list. I remember liking the idea of Velma getting to explore romance whilst remaining the superior mystery-solver, so I felt bad for her when Ben went evil, because you're right, they DID have cohesive interactions up until that point. But of course I couldn't be upset for long because I was quickly won over by Tim Curry being another fun and creepy villain :). Then in Alien Invaders, I was especially invested in Shaggy's and Scooby's blossoming relationships with Crystal and Amber, which I thought were BEYOND cute, especially since Amber is originally uninterested in Scooby but warms up to him later. As interesting as the twist was, I was really disappointed to learn Crystal and Amber were aliens and thus had to return to their own planet. It's hard enough for the duo to get girlfriends I imagine due to their over-the-top antics and crazy eating habits, so to see them succeed in finding girls who appreciated them for who they were, only to lose them shortly after, was really sad. Plus, the fact that Crystal and Amber were aliens seemed to say that no Earth girls would find Shaggy and Scooby desirable; they'd have to find alien girls to be appreciated, and that sucks. Same with Velma; only a man revealed to have been using her found her attractive. But Fred and Daphne? No no they're fine don't worry about it. So yeah, let it be known that Velma, Shaggy & Scooby all deserve to be just as happy as Fred and Daphne! (Which is probably part of the reason why Mystery Incorporated had Velma be attracted to Shaggy, because the writers knew that they deserved a long-overdue success in the love department).
@silentsnake314 жыл бұрын
I guess depending on which iteration of Scooby-Doo you look at, in the older series (the movies) that focused more on Scooby-Doo, shaggy and scrappy. Shaggy was dating a rockabella chick when he was a race car driver and in the whats new Scooby-Doo, Velma had that love interest in Egypt and that archeologist guy when looking for a crystallized dinosaur. Not to mention she was interested in sam Winchester in that one crossover.
@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose4 жыл бұрын
@@silentsnake31 True, I forgot about Omar, the Egyptian prince that Velma worked with in Where's My Mummy. They made for a cool duo; even more so when the twist was revealed. Don't think I saw the dinosaur one and I KNOW I didn't see the Reluctant Werewolf, I was more into Ghoul School, but yikes did Shaggy's girlfriend have an unfortunate name in that one. But yeah, point is that it often goes back and forth for Velma and Shaggy in the franchise, but with Fred & Daphne it's much more stabilized (for the most part).

Well uh about that shaggy and velma relationship Both were extremely unhappy and it ended with them realizing different things lol One thing that is reoccurring in some of the relationships for shaggy and scooby is that they realize they dont need that stuff by the end

I always enjoyed the way Scrappy added a twist in the series formula. Him being a reckless little guy was a fun addition to the group’s dynamic. Plus I liked that he thought Scooby was a brave role model when Scooby is always terrified. I hated that the writers of the live action movie did that to Scrappy. Just cause they disliked him doesn’t mean every fan feels the same way.

One of my favorite memories of Scooby Doo from my childhood: Halloween '98, I went trick-or-treating with my cousin in his neighborhood, wearing a Scooby costume my parents bought me from a catalogue (one that was so comfortable I wore it as pajamas for a few years), and when I came home exhausted and proud of my haul, I got to watch the premiere of "Zombie Island" on TV. For the record, my parents HATE Scooby Doo.

Your comment about Americana finally put to words why I love the first 3 movies so much more than the rest that follow. The setting and the atmosphere truly are just as important if not more essential to the film than the mystery. I cannot imagine any of those films being in a more perfect setting. Ever since I saw the Witches Ghost I have wanted to go to New England during the fall to experience the leaves. It is atmospheric and nostalgic in a way that none of the other films have been able to grab me. Likely an unpopular opinion, but I get a similar vibe from Boo Brothers and while I recognize the lack of quality, I think it captures a similar atmosphere to me and it’s one reason why I can’t help but hold those 4 films as my favorites in the Scooby doo genre.

Cyber Chase was also my favorite movie growing up, I found it way too scary, I believe it was because in Brazil things used to arrive later, so I watched it around 2004/5. It was a time where viruses and cyber menaces were largely discussed in media, and since I didn't own a computer, I didn't fully understand tech stuff and the movie seemed scarier than it actually was xD

Just recently I started binge-watching all the old episodes of Johnny Bravo, including the one from the first season where Scooby and the Gang did a crossover. And I realized they took certain things from that episode and put it in to That Scoobynatural special. Like how Johnny and Dean were both trying to get with Daphne who only had eyes for Fred, and how Velma had a thing for Sam like she did with Johnny. She always did have a thing for guys with broad shoulders. One thing I'm surprised about was their reaction when they saw that brutally murdered corpse for the first time. I don't know why but I was expecting more of a reaction from them like that "Scooby-Doo Murder Files" cutaway gag parody of them from Family Guy. "You're right, Scooby. We're dealing with one sick son of a bitch."
