Shawn's backstage politicking was probably at its worst during his WWF title reign. Even though I was 14 at the time, I still thought Sid was scary as hell.
@WolfWinter3 жыл бұрын
Backstage politics weren't the only reason Vader lost that title opportunity. He was notoriously stiff in the ring and people hated working with him. By people I mean the entire locker room. Sure, it was Shawn Michaels complaining about him that did it in, but it was more a straw breaking the camels back type situation. Vader would not have made a very good champion.

@@WolfWinter I agree to an extent. Vader's style wouldn't have worked in WWF at the time. At least in WCW, he had Sting, Dustin Rhodes, Flair, British Bulldog, Cactus Jack, men who could kind of reel Vader in and remind him he's not in Japan, he doesn't have to be as stiff. HBK, not being used to being served a plate of potatoes from Vader just went to Vince and it was done.
@WolfWinter3 жыл бұрын
@@ThatRetroGeek86 If it wasn't HBK it would have been someone else. Especially since people were complaining about him before Summerslam, but not, (I suspect) to Vince. I think that was made the difference. HBK, after all, was hardly alone in the 1996 WWF roster for being unused to the stiff Japanese style. People hold Vader up as a victim of HBK's locker room scheming, and that completely ignores that WWF was a completely different environment from WCW and Japan, where, as you say, Vader's style meshed much better with the rest of the locker room.

@@HiNRGboy sid himself said he never really had a love for wrestling like a lot of other guys. He got into it as a way to make more money for his family, and he put in the work he needed to for that, but it mostly seemed to be another job for him. Compared to the other main eventers he feuded with and a lot of other guys who were struggling to break out during his career, he wasn't nearly as obsessed with it. Check out the video on the start of his career, it talks a bit about it.

@Luke Campbell . It's not all about skill and Talent though. This is professional wrestling, not amateur wrestling, image plays a massive part. Also, his LOVE of professional wrestling has no real merit when it comes to him being a qualified and capable of performing his role.

57 second's in was hilarious to see Sid come out of that car. And, I always cheered for Sid. I remember visiting family in New York in mid 1996 we were in a Taxi and passed by Madison square garden and I seen the survivor series advertisement outside of venue. I also went to a Yankee game in July of 1993 that was a great game. I seen Mike Stanley the catcher hit a Grand slam. My grandmother taped the game I was seated right next to the Detroit Tigers dugout. Jim Abbott pitched for the Yankees and it was a close out.

God bless Sid. He was so intense in these promos and vignettes. Terrible way for him to go i lost my mom to pancreatic cancer 2yrs ago. And whatever form it comes in 9 out 10 times it will make you tap in the end. Even if you are 6'9 and 300+lbs like Sid. I had the honor and privilege of talking with him at an indy event i was doing promotional marketing for. He was a true gentleman and professional. I've followed his career all the way back to his Lord Humongous days back in '84 in CWA. I also believe in his prime like shown here he would have matched up well against guys like Braun Strowman and Brock Lesnar. To see him in person and see how HUGE his upper body was. TV didn't do him justice pardon the pun. Anyway RIP Sid and thank you for ALL the memories i hope you've been re-united with Leon and Scott Bigelow aka Vader and Bam Bam. Two guys i know you were close friends and colleagues with. God bless to your family during this difficult time.

Sid was a great "tweener", he even got a fantastic reception from the WM 8 crowd despite being the heel vs Hogan four years earlier in 1992. WWF just didn't want to listen to the fans reactions and that has always been an issue for them. That period with Hart, Austin, Sid and Undertaker screwing each other over for the title was brilliant. It was unpredictable yet believable, made all four seem equally matched and competitive so you never knew who was going to come out on top. It laid the foundations for the attitude era to come. The added bonus was that the drama centered around and added value to the pursuit of the title itself rather than somebody's wife having an affair, a wrestler's monster truck being destroyed or any McMahon family drama. Great video btw as Sid deserves far more credit than he gets.

No joke you really need to put in an application for an editor lol. Your work truly is top notch. I feel like I’m watching a major documentary release with every video. I don’t always agree but you go out of your way to make every video look as professional and clean as possible. You don’t take short cuts and do your due diligence with your research. I’ve learned so much through these videos. Especially about topics I’ve known about for years.

Again, revisionist history! Sid was cheered by a small row of fans near ringside but Hulk was still cheered by the majority. That did not make him the next Hulk Hogan. If Sid was more popular than Hulk Vince would've made him the face of his company which simply didn't happen.

Loved this video. I got into wrestling at this time as a young kid. Sid the new champ, HHH intercontinental champ and Owen and the Bulldog the tag champs. Regardless of how good much of the attitude era was, nothing compares to those months in late 96 and early 97 for me
