Was looking into buying one an 2018 or 2019 rdx but I heard the mpg is bad and alot of owners not getting the mpg claimed on sticker?? There is tons of forums about rdx mpg topic..been reading is a great vehicle and a joy to drive but very poor mpg.?? Now looking into rav4..I gotta be honest though like the looks of rdx a lot better but it bugs me that it gets poor mpg. A lot of people claiming on getting 15mpg in city..way too low for a mid size suv. This is one of the reasons iam not getting a truck

@@futbol1972 I bought an RDX Advance with SH-AWD in November. We have found the gas mileage to be poor, but not sure if this is due to the engine still being broken in (we only have 3000 miles on it so far). Our onboard computer says we have averaged 22 mpg since buying the car, which is a pretty even mix of highway and city driving. I am personally disappointed by that number, but otherwise really like the car.

My wife's 2012 and my 2016 AWD CR-Vs both have the same system and they do the job. I can take it through heavy snow and mud by simple turning off VSA and giving it a lot of gas. Honda says that it will go into AWD as soon as you get on the gas -- it is not only a slip - grip system like the old 3rd gen, but it is proactive. I've felt both the front and rear pushing and pulling as soon as I get on the gas, but it goes into FWD when going at a steady speed. The 5th generation CR-V will also allow you to see the torque distribution on the graphic (Honda says it will send up to 60% torque to the rear wheels in certain circumstances). As far as the Acura, I cannot comment since I haven't driven one.

I guess I've just become an old fuddy duddy, but when I'm driving in the snow I'm not interested in having "fun", I am interested in getting where I'm going in one piece. Not getting stuck in a drift and freezing to death is also high on the list. Where I live, if you get stuck, you can call whomever you want. You will be told that they will be out after the road is plowed, whether that's later that day or a week later. Until then you are on your own.

@@alansach8437 SHAWD isn't about fast and furious drifting. It can do slight drifts though, enough to be fun for a bit. But, it's designed for maximum traction all the time. That's it's strength. So this is perfect for you. RWD based cars and RWD biased AWD cars are more "fun" amd drift all day long.

Got a 2019 RDX A-Spec shortly after release and have to say, best decision ever. Soooo much fun in the snow, especially with traction control off. But once you put it into Snow mode, becomes very difficult to get it to slip. I legit had to try hard to get it to do so, which is very nice for being safe. Only downside is the sound system isn’t as good as its competition (Rovers and BMW, etc) but still impressive (I have the 16-speaker ELS version). Likely cause the sub is in the very back, but it’s not enough to sway my decision for the rest of it. Most vehicles can’t compare to its “multi personality” Snow vs Sport+, as well as the Acura quality, which blows every luxury manufacturer out of the water (aside from Lexus, but they don’t have the features to compare to this, such as no Pano sunroof, etc)

Curious about your Honda AWD explanation. The 2019 model has a display where you can see power distribution. In fact, the system can send up to 60% to the rear wheels. If you look at the display, you will notice not always send power to the front wheels when you take of, the system behave similar to what it does the AWD on the "old" Escape, where it sends power to the rear wheels on circumstances where there's no front wheel slip, but you need more power at the back to have a better control. So I don't think this 2020 is worst than before, and be only "2wd till front wheels spin".

As good as sh-awd is in bad weather, it performs even better on dry roads. It is an all weather/all season awd drive system if you like a sporty vehicle. You can really feel the rear end rotate around tight corners when the tq vectoring sends more power to rear outside wheel. The RDX and MDX drive like a much smaller vehicle with sh-awd system. The MDX sport hybrid and RLX sport hybrid has an improved sh-awd rear electric motor system a step above the sh-awd mechanical set-up. The sport hybrid Acura's can tq vector the outside rear wheel and use regen braking to slow the inside rear wheel to rotate tighter with or without engine power.

Of course, like 90% of "How does this car perform in the snow?" videos, we are on a nice plowed track that, with careful driving, you could drive just about any FWD car with decent snow tires around. It is very telling when the narrator says that the snow was starting to intensify so it was time to stop filming! Well, gee! What do I do if I'm at the grocery store and the snow unexpectedly "intensifies" ? Spend the night in the parking lot? It doesn't really matter how sophisticated or not the AWD system is or is not, it does you no good when you are high centered. Then it's all about clearance. When small SUVs first became popular in the late nineties/early 2000s, they all seemed to have a fair amount. But as they have gradually become "crossovers " a lot of that has disappeared. This is a big advantage that Subaru has (8.7 inches) in their Forester and Outback. Maybe that's one reason they are so popular in snowy areas. Something for these other manufacturers to think about.

You are so correct. I remember hitting a snowstorm on the drive from Boston to Hartford. Driving in 6-8 inches of snow all the way in my FWD Mazda6, passing all those Foresters and Outbacks along the way. Just push it and go, no turns, no stopping, no slow down. Biggest problem was visibility. A wall of snow, I was afraid hitting someone, I couldn't see the light of a car in front from 25 feet.

The type of tires is more important than the size. Having snow tires or mud/snow rated tires will always do better than all season or performance tires. I don’t know about the CRV, but I can tell you the RDX doesn’t get near it’s rated mpg. My 22 RDX struggles to get 23 mpg highway driving 70 mph with cruise control and a flat road. By comparison my 19 BMW X3 with a similar 2 liter turbo easily returned 32-33 mpg on the same drive. That’s a 10 mpg difference between the RDX and X4. How is that possible Honda?

I was going to upgrade my 08 RDX with a 19 RDX back in 2019. I was getting about the same mpgs for both during my test drive (live +5000 feet with hwy speeds +75 mph). The 2.0T is working pretty hard to haul +2 tons. Ended up going for a 19 MDX hybrid 321hp, more room, and improved mpgs of +25.

Highway drive, I can get 32-34mpg at 70mph, no problem with AWD CR-V 2017. Didn't know there's such a large difference in the gas mileage, as my former Acura TL (2006 V6, 3.2l, 258 bhp) was easily 29-30mpg on highway, many years back. I ordered CR-V though, because the trunk space is 50% larger than RD-X. So to match it I needed MDX, but that's a tank, and I didn't want to commute every day in a tank.

The problem with all of this, once again, hard packed snow. You aren't really testing anything on hard packed snow. Slushy slimy stuff, ice, deep snow is when the shawd will shine. Plus, turning off TCS doesn't turn off stability control. There's a sequence you have to do with button presses and the hand brake/brake pedal in order to completely turn off the stability control on the Acura. I have a TLX. Only assuming the RDX is the same. I've driven one, but in the summer.I tried a CRV sport the other day against other SUV's, and even with TCS off, stability wouldn't let you play. If you want to actually "drift" you gotta turn ALL the nannies off.

@@pinkertonpunk funny. Even with Tcs on my tlx will kick the tail out. With it off, even more. Nathan either misspoke or was given incorrect information. The electric motor that drives the hydraulic pump that engages the clutch pack is on the rear differential itself - NOT inside the transmission. @@GoofieNewfie I grew up driving sticks and still have two stick shift cars (this actually has nothing to do with the push button transmission :-) ) I also have two 2019 Acura products and find them to be acceptable. I guess I never expected the shifts to be instant. I also have a BMW and the delay is about the same in both. Just something to think about, Lamborghini uses a push button transmission, the new C8 Corvette has a push button transmission, and oddly nobody seems to be complaining about those. I honestly think people got used to complaining about Acura/Honda push button transmission since they were one of he first ones to implement that solution. Just my thoughts.

I've owned nothing but stick-shift cars all my life until I got a new CRV with that "evil" CVT and you know what? It's completely fine. Smooth and efficient and no, I don't have oil dilution. A few months ago I was getting window tint put on at the dealer and they gave me a loaner Accord with the push button transmission. It took no time to get used to it and I love the cleaner open look. I wish USDM CRV's had that. Yeah, I'm tired of people complaining about what they aren't used to. I still have an old manual vtec 1997 Prelude SH "SH-FWD" and yes it's very old and authentically analog in comparison, but I can appreciate all the newer changes to cars because of it.

At 2:23, Nathan said the CR-V's AWD system is not proactive and only sends power to the rear wheels when the front wheels slip. This is not correct. hondanews.com/en-US/releases/2017-honda-cr-v-powertrain?page=5 At 0:37, Nathan says the CR-V and RDX are "technically built under the same roof". While that's true, Accords, MDX's, ILX's, TLX's, and even NSX's are built under the same roof as well and are very different vehicles. ohio.honda.com/our-operations#products

In 2016, Autoweek interviewed CR-V development leader Takaaki Nagadome and wrote: "Unlike the old system, this new one can send torque rearward on dry pavement to aid handling." Honda's 2017 CR-V powertrain press release states: "The system doesn't merely react to front wheel spin; it minimizes wheel spin before it happens by sending power to the rear wheels accordingly." If you set the Driver Information Interface to display the AWD Torque Distribution Monitor, you can see that the rear wheels are powered from a stop even when there is no front wheel slip.
