Ehm, why? CiS never needed bigger ship and the ones they had were perfectly fine in terms of tech. They needed more carriers as their drone fighters could be launched in thousands from a small vessel compared to biggest republic and imperial carriers launching 7-8 dozens at max. Just mix in a few with warhead and order those to suicide ram republic capital ship when the whole swarm attacks.

As a maritime history buff, whenever I hear about sci fi battlecruisers being slow or plodding or anywhere near the archetypical "mighty glacier" I shudder. What defined them in real life was comparatively higher speed over their contemporary battleship cousins. Often achieved by thinning armor protection and upping engine power.

I get that these people didn't study naval hierarchy, but just quickly looking into common ship capabilities and roles could've given a much more interesting depth of ships to many sci fi franchises. Star Wars does seem to sometimes try to fix this, but overall it's a "problem" across much of sci fi

The Resurgent class Star Destroyer is talked about so little when it’s one of the most powerful and best looking battleships in SW history. Like if I got the change to take on any Republic, Separatist,Imperial, Rebellion, Resistance or First Order battleship it would hands down be the resurgent.

My vote is for the NR Mediator. Mon Cal shields are quite possibly the best in Star Wars, and she would be fielding the best starfighters the galaxy had to offer: XJ's, E-Wings and K-Wings

The only reason everyone calls Mon Calamari ships the best in Star Wars is that the Givins’ ships are so sidelined, I don’t think we have the name of a single Givin ship model. For those who don’t know, the Givin are a species from Legends who come from a planet where tidal forces cause the atmosphere to pool up in certain places, creating a vacuum on much of the planet’s surface. The Givin can survive in a vacuum for a short time, but they also have to use math to predict when they will have air, making them a very math-savvy species. They eventually started applying their mastery of math to shipbuilding, creating starships that at least rivaled Mon Calamari engineering.

You know that freighter was hit countless times, but somehow resisted the firepower of a ship that wrecked a corellian corvette in no time. That freighter is protected by an armor from Elsewhere, a ship that you were unable to prevent from reaching orbit and leave the system, might I had, despite the fact two of your TIEs were in close air support mission on site, and the freighter was hijacked by a slow ass heavy cargo ship that stayed in orbit for something like 15 minutes straight, while it was getting boarded by pirates. Oh, and that TIE you shut down? It was piloted by _your_ prisoner, who escaped thanks to _your_ traitor, and who was able to easily destroy almost all of one section of your broadside battery: someone forgot to design hull-tight shields for you. What a shame. I have no trouble believing you actually _couldn't_ catch that Mon Cal, since you didn't even bother to try when you met her first, despite the fact you outnumbered her already, and she was standing there, stationary above her base. You didn't even fire one turbolaser in her direction. What kind of Destroyer are you? A Shy Destroyer? You've got some nice weaponry on paper but all we've seen so far is a TIE that you needed two missiles to wreck, and who destroyer about a dozen of your batteries in one row. Pretty underwhelming that's for sure. Momma Imperial isn't impressed: she can bombard planets on her own, she's as fast as the Millenium Falcon, tracking that thing down for days without sweating. It takes a freaking asteroid field for days to kill her. She tears through corvettes and frigates in seconds when they don't have plot armour. She never had any of her crew deserting in mission. No fighter was ever able to destroy any or her batteries without taking out the shields first. She flown dozens of TIEs hurling towards her enemies, while you seem to have to respect a rule that forces you to launch only 4 TIEs in a row, no more. What a joke for a battlecruiser with so many hangar bays. It really looks like you are better at posing than acting.

In my Star Wars Fanon universe, I created a modified ISD-1 Star Destroyer that could take on a good sized fleet and still come out on top. The ship’s name was the Thunderbolt, and while a large part of its success came from the tactical genius of its commander, Commodore Lorth Vize, it was still armored and armed at a level far enough past the typical Star Destroyer to give it the title of battlecruiser, in my opinion.

Upon his promotion to Admiral, Vize received a new ship, the Emperor’s Fury, but this ship, an Ultima-class flagship, the only ship in its class in my Fanon universe, would be categorized as a dreadnought in the Imperial Navy, as it was slightly larger than an Executor-class, with a massive, mile-long minigun that could be deployed from the underside, a weapon Vize affectionately refers to as “the Peacekeeper.”

Now, I'm not saying to make things up and say that they're canon, but you can still use canon information (like the Resurgent's 1500 plus turbolasers/point defence turrets) and imagine how they'd go in battle, among other things. U forgot to mention that the Mediator was particularly tanky for a Mon Cal ship, as it could withstand a nuclear detonation in its hangar. It also packed an immense amount of firepower. While we don’t know exact details on its weapons, it has been stated that when a Mediator showed up in a system, the firepower it possessed was enough to make warring factions come to the negotiating table. I’m surprised u didn’t show the model used for the Mediator in the Awakening if the Rebellion mod

The Resurgent-class Star Destroyer is a fast and agile ship. It could travel even faster than a First Order TIE Fighter if need be, however, such speed came at the cost of maneuverability. At top speeds, the ship needed a lot of counter-thrust, for even the smallest maneuver, thus in the hands of a reckless commander, the Resurgent could find itself out of control and even destroyed. The ship required the most experienced commanders in order to be piloted appropriately.

Battle cruisers in classic navy doctrine were ships armored like a heavy cruiser with cruiser speed but the guns of a battleship (a star destroyer). The idea was they would engage cruisers and hunt them down but run if faced with a battleship. The only time they would engage a battleship was in support of other friendly battleships. When they would go it alone you would have massive losses like the HMS Hood to the Bismarck. The idea in the Star Wars universe (as well as many others) that a battlecruiser was the biggest thing out there is just insane.

#AskEck How would a confrontation/fight between the Nebula Star Destroyer and Starhawk Battleship turn out? And which is more well designed?

Justin Trujillo the Nebula is better designed/more powerful. The Nebula was created way later in the Legends NR era, and had better firing arcs, better shielding, and better fighters. Assuming The Starhawk had the same shield generators as the ISD (because the starhawk was literally thrown together with ISD parts) then the shielding on the Nebula would be vastly better. The starhawk also was active during 6-7 ABY, which meant it still carried rebel fighters, (A wing, Xwing Ywing probably no Bwings) if it even had a hangar, while the Nebula carried the next generation fighters (Ewing, Defender, Kwing T75 Xwing, J-Stealth Xwing). The 80 turbos, 20 Ion cannons and 10 concussion missile launchers are easily more firepower than the Starhawk could feasibly have. The only advantage the Starhawk could have is the stronger tractor beam, but that would probably be no effect in this fight. (The only reason a starhawk was able to pull down a SSD was because an entire fleet destroyed the engines, secondary engines, and it had a huge gravity assist from the planet of Jakku) I doubt it can normally pull a capital ship the size of a Nebula down normally without all those factors.

My headcanon is: The Praetor actually was set up with the ability to be REMODELED to have more weapons. Just in case the reformation was ever determined obsolete. So they made a ship with the necessary power generation and shields for a ship that size (at least at the time), and left it under-armed to avoid breaking the treaty. While perhaps at least leaving a reasonable number of redundant power conduits lying around at certain points to where you COULD potentially add the "rest" of the guns if it became necessary. Obviously, it would not be suited to adding on turreted weaponry larger or more draining than the heaviest weapons available at the time it was designed and the demonstration model built (and obviously being no better suited to slapping on fixed weaponry than any other capital ship). And thus the Praetor 2 was essentially just the Praetor updated to be able to support more modern weapons, and coming standard with more weapons, but which was still left with "empty slots" on its hull that could be further augmented because, perhaps at the time it first started going into production, there was still debate on just how much the Reformation should be flouted and/or how going too far past it may result a bad image for the Republic. And thus, the Praetor 2 came, in "base form" still under-armed, but still able to have more guns added to bring it to what you would expect from a ship that size if that were done. Who knows, with all the fleets engaging each other and mildly damaged vessels that needed repair, a number of Praetor 2s that got light damage may have been sent in for quick repairs that also silently added the "remaining" guns. Edit: Oh, don't get me wrong. The more modern vessels likely are better battlecruisers usually, since they in their stock form don't require "sending in for repairs" to actually bring them up to their intended spec. But at the same time, I'm not sure I really consider the First Order "Star Destroyer" to really be a "Battlecruiser," as well, they don't seem to really treat it as such. Instead, its more like the First Order just wants to say that every ship class is bigger now, because TARKIIIIIIIIN and all that (hey, they made a PLANET into a superweapon just to show up those "puny" Death Stars, and then made the Mega Star Destroyer to show up those old executors, so yeah, this is a thing they do).

I just realised 3 quaters of the way thru that the reformation thingys that limit ship stuff is exactly like the two london naval treaties after world war one to ensure there wasnt another naval arks race like between britian and germany before ww1. These treaties in turn limit british naval capacity for ww2 making it harder to eliminate german ships which were secretly built that broke treaty rules. TL;DR the reformation thing mentioned is like the irl london naval treaties which hurt british naval dominance in ww2

For those wondering, in real life a battlecruiser was sort of a middle ground between the battleship and heavy cruiser. A battlecruiser was well-armed and armored, but not quite as well as a proper battleship. However, it made up for this by being much faster than a battleship. It could wreck anything on the sea except a battleship, which it could easily outrun. ...Then aircraft carriers became a thing and ruined all of the cool ship types.

I would argue a battlecruiser in the RL sense would make tons of sense for the Empire. IRL battlecruisers were generally meant as anti-cruiser ships or to have a capital ship present when a battleship isn't available or able to do the job. Basically you make a ship that has the speed of a cruiser and has either the armor of a BB or the weaponry of a BB, or in this case a dreadnought. A ship that is able to keep up with or chase down smaller ships (like the Rebellion favored) but still outgun or be too tough for them would be the bane of the republic. Just imagine a ship able to chase down and destroy anything, including Mon Cal cruisers 1v1 but able to run away from anything that outguns it which is only the rare dreadnought. They need less crew and are cheaper to make so Dreadnoughts like the SSD can be used for defending key installations/planets or assaulting the most heavily defended planets while battlecruisers could be used to patrol hot zones, lead groups of SDs, escort interdictor cruisers and destroy what they catch, due to their speed they can be an emergency response force or lead one, etc. Imagine if the Interdictor was actually a battlecruiser? Instead of being a relatively weak ship that needs defending it would be more powerful than most ships except for the larger Mon Cal cruisers. I'd argue such a ship would be about as perfect an anti-rebellion ship as one could get. Especially with a good complement of fighters and anti fighter turrets.

Everyone rips on the First Order just because the new movies aren't popular, but really their technology outpaces pretty much all competition. Their ships and vehicles are excellent and their training program seems like it's nearly on par with what the Kaminoans used. Not to mention that they have intelligently redesigned Imperial assets to maintain a level of psychological warfare. Really I think their only flaw is that they train their officers with a little too much zeal, which makes them very overconfident

The Mediator was said to be half the length of the Viscount BEFORE the Viscount was reckoned as a prototype of only 3000 meters. So when the size of the Mediator was given it was compared to a full size Viscount dreadnought. So over half of 17km = + 8,5 km. It is the New Republic equivalent of the Bellator.

The battlecruiser concept in naval architecture has always been a hybrid one: Outrun dreadnaughts and outgun cruisers and other similar caputal ships. BCs in the British and US Navies were intended to operate in semi independant squadrons as part of a Grand Fleet or independantly cruising the oceans chasing down commerce raiders. In Star Trek you see this concept in the Klingon D6, The Kzinti BCs ans CCs, the Romulan Birds of Prey and the Federation Heavy Cruisers such as the Hood and Excelsiors. The battlecruiser role is partly served in SW by the ISDs and ISD2s.

1. Would the Bulwark III be considered the best Rebel/NR battlercruiser in Lucas Canon? It is 2500 meters. Meanwhile, in Disney Canon, the MC85 is 3000 meters and has incredible shields. We do not know very much in terms of what the Mediator looks like or it's precise size. As for the CIS, what about the Lucrehulk?

Great video. The Allegiance is my favourite of all these ships. It has flaws, but it's a highly specialised warship. 8:07, I just noticed how bad the marching of those clones is. They're not in time to each other, and they're supposed to be the best fighting force the Republic could get. I've seen better drill from Army Cadets.

In my Opinion, I would rank the battlecruisers like this: 1. Resurgent, for having over 1.500 Weapons and using kybercristals. 2. Praetor, even tho the weapons are not known, the MK2 version had 60 Heavy Quad Turbolasers, 40 Medium Twin Turbolasers, 10 Long Range Ion-Cannons and 30 Twin Ion cannons 3. The Allegience for having 12-Gun Batteries, 3 Axial Dual Heavy Turbolasers and 6 Trench Gun Batteries 4. I am putting the Mediator here, because it is known what, but not known how many weapons. If you are disagreeing with something, just comment it.

Battle cruisers are such a cool class to have in the Star Wars universe. Dreadnoughts are Idea for flag ships and are always an imposing and game changing weapon of war. But Dreadnoughts are the most expensive maintain and costly to build of offense capital ships. Where as Battle Cruisers pack just enough fire power with out having to stupidly big and still provide an effective force multiplier on the battlefield. It also means you aren't advertising your most powerful ships to your enemy either. Dreadnoughts really are meant for your biggest and toughest space clashes with your enemies when you have very a large fleet with lots of ships to support it. Also Dreadnoughts along with any kind of super carrier are your ace cards meaning you want to keep them defending core worlds or in reserve when needed while still maintaining combat readiness for the crews. Battle Cruisers are more flexible typically and aren't so big that the enemy detect you well in advance. So they are easier to fit into smaller defense or offensive fleets when needed as an extra set of fire power while still maintaining a certain level of speed and surprise on the enemy. Also Battle Cruisers are more readily available when radio in for support and can be battle ready faster than a dreadnought could as dreadnought has huge amount of pre battle tasks by the crew before launch and make sure all the logistics are in order which would take time. Yes even Battle Cruiser would have a fair amount of that work and up keep to do to but still a lot less then a dreadnought. Standard heavy cruisers are the Backbone of a navy and can handle most jobs and conflicts with other smaller supporting ships. But Battle Cruisers are a good investment as they are nice go between a standard heavy cruiser and a Battleship. As if you want to send more powerful ships when needed but don't want risk your most powerful naval assets in smaller base conflicts that the dreadnought couldn't reach its full potential that's were battle cruisers come in handy. And you can keep your battleships in reserve hidden away deep in your territory of space defending core worlds or preparing them for large scale offensive at a later time when you can attack key asset's and worlds of your enemy catching them off guard when they least expect it. But that's my opinion. And personally I agree that the FSO Star Destroyer is the best and most versatile battle cruiser design as its product of lessons learned from the Galactic Civil War.

But when your an Emperor ruling the Galaxy through fear and are compensating for a small one eyed touser snake of course its realistic to expect a size of ship of a small city or large town roughly. Okay Even the Death Stars, Star Killer Base and Snokes Mega Star destroyer of 60kms long make even an imperial SSD look reasonable at its excess 20kms long. Your looking at it from a real world perspective or that of logical and practical military developed by a group of military designers in democratic society where opinions differ how the navy should be designed around to suit the factions needs. Now if you get into the Mind of Emperor Palpatine a Sith Lord and Tyrant who wants to do anything to assert is control of the galaxy. He gonna want big scary tools of war that might not make sense practically but good for pyschological warfare and Political gains that further legitimizes his rule of the galaxy. Of course his navy is gonna made up of giant cool looking but not really effective kinda warships. And one who criticizes his zanny crazy ideas is gonna either be force zapped to death by him, Choked by Vader, executed for treason worse end , better end discredited and or demoted and booed by every Storm trooper that serves the empire lol.

But the Produces wanted to make a more powerful version of the empire to an extent but failed to give consistent data on ship specs. But even if the info is made on the spot enough people will estimate on what they think the sizes should be and hopefully eventually we will have a universally excepted standard. But again purpose and use is up to a factions needs and what they want. Look Battle Cruisers and Dreadnoughts more or less aren't going to be used as much as smaller more mass produce able warships. But its still nice to have them just in case as its better to have larger Capital ships on stand by if needed If your Faction has the credits to maintain the operating costs of such warships then to not have any when you really need to have them. Its a White Elephant concept and debatable if you need any thing more powerful than a standard ISD 2 lol. But personally I like the option to just in case if needed. In terms of what a battlecruiser is supposed to do, I'd rank them as follows: Allegiance Resurgence Mediator Praetor A battlecruiser is meant for one sole job: to DESTROY enemy capital ships/other heavy vessels. It is not required to have point-defense weaponry (though it is advised), nor is it required to have ANY fighter/bomber compliments. It needs to be exactly what the Empire loved: big bad boom-boom. The Allegiance does this best, even though it's not the most well-rounded ship. If we're talking about a ship that can more properly protect itself, or fill a potential multi-role purpose, then the Mediator or Resurgence would be a better fit. The Allegiance, however, is meant to be with a dedicated support fleet. It's got all the protection it needs right there, allowing it to just let loose with its many turbolaser batteries and just rip opposing ships apart.

Definitely one of the biggest gripes that people have with most sci-fi vessels is that writers just want their ships to sound cool. "Destroyer" "Battleship" "Battlecruiser" "Dreadnought" etc. They all sound cool, powerful, badass, the kind of ship that's going to fuck your day up and there's not a damn thing you can do about it...and that's FINE...but only if you apply the name properly. Destroyers are small-ish compared to a battleship or carrier, are sometimes specialized, and usually are meant as escorts for larger fleet formations. They're not supposed to be giant hulking death-monsters, but because "destroyer destroys things, hurr-durr", capital ships get slapped with the name "Destroyer" tagged on the end of it.

If the praetor is modular, and all of its systems can be easily pulled out and replaced then it could easily surprise with its performance. I'm not too familiar on the lore about it but if you could easily retrofit the ship with modern star wars tech it'd be an absolute beast. If its systems weren't built with future proofing in mind it'd probably just be a massive distraction for the enemy. Something to draw fire away from other ships in your fleet. It's performance is therefore entirely up in the air. If I was in charge of such a project I'd make sure that when the time came everything in the ship, including the armor itself could be upgraded easily and for less cost than building a whole new ship. If you're going to build a beast of a ship that big it better be future proofed because building a new ship to replace it every time technology advances would be a nightmare.

I would say the Allegiance is my favourite of these four battle cruisers, not just a bias opinion but because of familiarity with using it often in Empire at War long as you can keep producing them at 11,000 credits each. I have no doubt the Resurgent is a great ship but we have not seen much of it in major fleet action either. Perhaps if there is a First Order Mod I would check it out. The Praetor always struck me as a great bulky ship with that roll of a tower but can easily be overwhelmed when bombers and sustained fire are brought against it since I have destroyed many that way.
