Why I'm Disappointed with Digimon Adventure 2020

This is my review of the first 30 episodes of Digimon 2020. I hope you enjoy it because even though it's approximately 10 episodes late, it's also one of the most heavily worked on videos I've ever published on this channel.
And before you start freaking out, no I don't hate the show. Much of what I complained about here got addressed within the next few episodes on the second half of this show. I'm really enjoying the whole thing so far, but there are some serious bumps that people don't seem interested in talking about. That's what this video was for.

honestly, the fact that the original digimon had a animation budget of a shoestring which made it impossible to have fights for longer than 5 seconds without using bank animation, was a blessing in disguise, cuz that forced the writers to focus on the story and characters instead of just devoting most of the episodes to long battles

I definitely feel like both it and other shows sometimes thrive from limitations being placed on them, forcing creative solutions. Either that or we get digivolution sequences for 5 minutes of the 20 runtime :^)

Yes, limitation breeds creativity, and sadly the more technology advances, the less big companies have to try to make a good product, so we end up with half baked garbage like Adventure 2020 and Ghost Game. It is why the best way to enjoy fiction these days is with indie games made by one or a small group of people.

@@TheDeathmail Yeah... I'm not so sure about that. So far the reboot has failed to portray the children's doubts and insecurities as tangible human beings. Yamato being overly too protective of Takeru and being driven to despair when he thought he failed as a brother and as a friend; Taichi feeling guilty over Hikari's illness, his stubborn personality at the begining of the series and his tendecy to lose his temper until coming to terms with his role as a leader; Koushiro struggling with the fact he was adopted and using his computer as a means to escape reality; Sora doubting her own capacity to love others due to her quarrelings with her mother; Jou trying to keep up with his brothers' success in life and his fear of failing to live up to the expectations of his family and teammates; Mimi acting like a spoiled little brat with little regard to others; Takeru's fear of being a burden to the rest of the team and his constant arguments with Patamon due to their immaturity; Hikari trying to hide her illness from her brother so as to not make him worried, to the point of passing out and risking her life... None of those very human traits which were present in the original have been properly addressed in this reboot. To me it seems as if the the writers just took a quick look at the character profiles in some Wiki page and said "Ok, so this is our hot blooded shounen hero, this is the brooding emo kid, this is the nerdy dude with a computer...", so on and so forth.

It amazes how action packed this show is, yet nothing seems to really happen.

The Digimon Adventure remake has to compete with a screenplay and directing behemoth predecessor and with its sequel 02. The 2020 digidestined are hollow self-fulfilled prophecies and the plot hasn't the cohesion the original had. Mind you the original Digimon Adventure was intended as a limited series but the minds behind it managed to conceal by being inventive and stretched it 54 episodes. The dangers were dire and real, the power of the crests was earned through self reflection and personal struggles with the bad self, the main characters were flawed and three dimensional with familial bonds that showed us their roots in the original and in 02. The original show took its time to do character and world building, whereas the remake is rushed and blatantly stages the progression around a holy prophecy that robs the viewers of the surprise of the unknown the original series had with its interchangeable villains and environments. The worst part is that the trust and bond between the human partners and their digimon isn't built on the psychological stages of astonishment - fright - curiosity - understanding - acceptance rather is forced or omitted because it happened off-screen alienating the viewer who isn't emotionally invested.

This show has the exact same issue Tri and Kizuna did, they just don't understand what made the original show good, instead they just put a bunch of loud noises and lights and expect us yo be entertained so we don't notice the terrible one-note characters.

Kizuna was so bad, and I hate the message that adults can't have Digimon partners. I know it is a values dissonance thing, but I am not Japanese and I don't think growing up means letting go of things I loved as a kid.

I disagree with them needing new evolutions just because they are dealing with a group of Ultimates... in fact, I feel it should be the opposite. In the original, they were under powered for like 7 episodes. They had a SINGLE moment with an advantage with Skullgreymon but that itself became a great danger. The kids don't need to always win, they should instead be surviving. That would make their victories all the more sweeter. And they should have been more willing to just space sh*t out....

Yeah, especially considering how much more hostile the World is. Furthermore, they directly pick fights whit avoidable Enemys, instead of just running away. Any other Anime, including the OG, whit Skullgreymon had an Episode showing how recklessness gets punished. Theres also zero calm Moments, to calm down. Everything feels rushed, and hectic.

Agree, the original was a joruney, were the kids most of the time, they feel underpower and escaping, trying to reach safety, and even when they atempt the ultimate forms, wargreymon and metal garururmon, were beaten by the dark master wiouth breaking a sweat, only when the kids understand the true inn power and the meaning of figthing for those who love, care and protecting the inocent, is when they atempt that power, at the end, the entire journey was survive and escape, here it feels empty and rush. I think these comes for that idea in modern anime, where the OC has to be op as f, since isekai and shonen became anime, because nothing new appear, main protagonist must be op

@@Krysnha you say that but old digimon was already op, in fact this reboot nerfed zeedmilleniummon, zeedmilleniummon old version could wipe out dbs universe casually. so in actuality this reboot is even worse because it contradicts franchise established lore for the shows, mangas, games, digipets, character designs, drama cds, screenplays, x antibody designs, everything, this reboot contradicts it all. ever since this new fad where they retcon lore starting with digimon adventure tri and then tried to turn all digimon into yokai in digimon survive and adventure 2020 throwing old lore out the window its been going downhill. last evolution kizuna and app monsters have been the only good series since after xros wars. thank goodness they got the original mangakas of the digimon mangas to work on digimon ghost game. maybe the reason digimon survive keeps being delayed is they realize the retcons are ruining the franchise, I hope so.

Frontier didnt destroy digimon, in fact digimon is just super sentai but Monster. People just dont like "new" idea. Also 2020 ironically the worst one overall digimon next to Digimon Adventure Tri.

apparently the scriptwriter is from Dragon BAll Super and this is why I won't watch this garbage. I have seen a few scenes and couldn't get past episode 1. Joe was one of the best characters turned into a crybaby having others to tell him what to do. And I saw others criticizing the show for similar reasons. The animation is good tho, but so was Xros and Xros is garbage. The original adventure had the worst because it started as a low budget show. Yet it's CGI animations were amazing and the protagonists as well as their interactions with each other, their partner digimon and their relatives where what made the show engaging to watch. 02 did the opposite route where the antagonists were the things that made the show worth watching with each having some kind of depth to them, while Adventure had only one dimensional evil villains with the exception of Puppetmon. Not that it matters because Tamers shits on both and is surperior in everything to anything else in Digimon. Doesn't need a reboot either nor a sequel. The only thing that can be fixed in that show is removing Ryo. Fug Ryo.

Damn, I've never been happier to see a youtube comment section than to see someone posting on this video. Thanks for the comment m8. I was unaware that the script writer was from Super but that makes plenty of sense. Say what you will about Joe, but he's honestly my favorite part of this show by a pretty long shot. The animation is good when it wants to be, but it feels like they phoned it in on a lot of climatic parts. OG Adventure didn't look THAT bad, and I 100% agree with the rest of that statement. 02, Yeah honestly Ken, Blackwargreymon, Arukenimon/Mummymon. The list is not short. Tamers is pretty head and shoulders over the rest of the series mostly because of the head writer being a fucking beast, and most of the characters changing throughout the show with some damn good character arcs and story lines. I go over a lot of this in a previous video "Some of my Favorite SPOOKS in almost Every Season of Digimon" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/haukZoOBd7F-gJI I will say this about the show so far though, I don't know who was doing the story boarding for the season, but they need to be fired. the next 15 episodes after 30 have all been a straight ramp in quality and character development. I'm going to make a follow up video about this show, but God damn, this show could have been something else if they had just swapped episodes ~9-26 with episodes 30-45. It's almost like they wanted to hit all the big beats as fast as possible before they earned any of them and it's really sad to see how it turned out.

@@TheAverageGatsby Well, if Joe in this season is the best it can offer, I can't imagine any of the older characters, exept perhaps Kari, to live up to their original. Even in 02 Kari was pretty uh... Female characters in Digimon in general are pretty underwhelming with the exceptions of the females in Tamers. Maybe you could argue about Nene, but that's only for the first half of Xros Wars/Fusion. With first half I mean the first half before the Death Generals are introduced. Hunters I count as seperate and it made her look even worse. Adventure 99 improved over time with it's animation. Digievolution scenes for stages above Champion and the armors had far more love in them showing the love in the product. It still holds up as the second best season in my mind. I would have honestly loved if the orignal scriptwriter came back, but apparently he left the project during Kizuna movie showing that writers no longer have the creative freedom they once had. And that movie was awful besides the pretty colors and bringing back the 02 kids that Tri, which was also pretty awful, shafted them. @@M3rtyville Of the cast I'd say something like Tai is basically just the charismatic leader who will get anything done regardless of what it takes Matt is OG Adventure turned up to 11, but his interactions with the other characters is still fun Izzy doesn't exist. He's just there to read plot points. Mimi is pretty S-tier given that she is just having a good time. Sora had like one or two other moments total which were... alright? Hikari is probably the worst offender here since 90% of the show so far she's just god the dead man stare. Her only redeeming factor is once Gatomon comes to the cast, Gatomon is very funny with her over protectiveness. Gatomon is nothing like the OG Adventure but that's fine, meanwhile Hikari is just going, "Damn I sure do love anything I can hug" Joe on the other hand is pure comedy. He's constantly out to prove he's the leader because he's the oldest and it's fucking hilarious. This is like the opposite of Hikari where he's nothing like the original, but instead of being boring he's just a spectacle. There is a lot more at play but I'm def going to make another video for it later on because God bless, it's a good show on the second half, but I gotta see how it ends before I pass any judgement on it because the 1-16 had me hooked only for 17-30 to just leave me completely bored. I can't say I feel the same way about Last Evolution though. I liked it as a character study of Tai and Matt. I may or may not make a video about it eventually, but I thought it was a nice short story unlike Tri which felt like a dragged out version of Last Evolution with similar plot threads of people who lost their digimon trying to ruin everything. That might even be the angle I take in a video for it phrasing it as "Tri rolled on the floor so Kizuna could run" or something.

@@TheAverageGatsby Joe was an amazing character in the original. Calling him boring is kinda insulting. There were annoying scenes, but he did and archived things. He did several selfless acts to safe the others such as saving TK from Veggiemon or from drowning ending up almost drowning himself (activation of his crest). He stayed alone with Mimi and nursed Ogremon. That's a thing too. He didn't want to become a doctor like his dad wanted, but his experience in the Digital World changed it. Even more amazing was when his brother talked to him to become what he wants to be instead of what his dad wants. Even if he was annoying, you can count on him when you need to. Like when he stole the bike from a passenger so Davis and Ken can make it in time to stop Diaboromon in Diaboromon strikes back. I don't like Kizuna because that "character studie" was done already in the original when they had to leave the Digimon forever at least as far as they know. All of them. And we know the ending of 02 is canon so Kizuna isn't relevant either. It feels like Melodrama for the sake of Melodrama. They did the same with Tri. The only thing I like about Kizuna is how hot the main antagonist looks.

The argument I hate to hear is that it's a new series. It's different from the original so it wouldn't be fair to compare it. That bull, the show doesn't really focus on the characters since the style of the show is "you know who these guys are and what they are about" Like you can't rely on the original that much, but still want to be completely different. The worst decision was turning Tai into a shonen protagonist, that's not Tai. Tai was a flawed person who had a lot to learn and kinda an excitable dork and a bit of a doofus. I knew something was off when Tai didn't immediately start teasing Izzy about how much a computer geek he is. TK went from having a personality to becoming a plot device just like Kari. Appmon was a better show and no I'm not even kidding. At least when Wargreymon showed up we got Brave Heart and he was the right size.

Feels like they gave a sheet of paper to each of the 60+ something employees and said, "here write an episode" and then they just gathered the material and did a series of it. All episodes feels like fillers, the characters have no back stories at all so as a viewer you don't really care if they live or die to be honest. The evolutions, though some are great just feels off, the motivation of why it occurred are usually something random "oh Tai you farted in front of Sora that gave me courage to evolve", or something like that. Even though I do love introduction of new Digimons and evolution etc. they just made most things sloppy. Long ass evolution sequences for two of the characters while the rest have really fast almost none sequences at all (which I personally prefer), I mean seeing some of them evolving in 3-7 seconds and then have Agumon (mostly) take more than 20-30 seconds to do the same thing just ruins the pace of the episode and feels out of place somehow. Nah this series could have be done great, I would not say they had to copy the original but come one, they have sooo much potential when everything today is more or less digital and they didn't use it much to their advantage. Feels like they just dumbed down everything because they thought kids today doesn't care much about plot anyways. Well this is one of the more weaker Digimon throughout the years, big disappointment, really...

They rush through everything so we dont get to absorb everything that happened. They cram exposition into a few scenes. Most of the kids dont know each other. Digimon always try to kill them. They keep splitting up despite being a team.

Also something you mention, in the original, the kids, were humans, i remember when, the rock ape digiimon, tied the kids under the scorching sun and they were weack for that, Tai sister became sick, for being a kid walking under a scorching sun, and in two, Kari hurt he leg and couldnt escape an attack and she needed rescue, so mi question how the f survive all those things you show

I felt both love and boredom with 2020. They did a lot of things right then wrong and wrong. Like why did tai need to be the center of everything. If omnimon showed up so often. Couldnt the other cast get a fusion as well and other things. millenniummon being defeated with the spirit bomb left a god aweful taste in my mouth. Id rather see omnimon again. Or a good idea would be the two GOD level digimom doing something. Idk fuse they seem to like omnimon to much.

Done Devimon was a mindless Beast, at the End, and Darkknightmon kinda killed his Individuality to serve as Host, or something. We didn't have a start to finish, sentient Antagonist so fare.

Oh hey!!! That's the iceberg I made (even though it's an old version lmao) I feel Adventure (2020) is pretty meh, but we have seen worse. (Xros Wars almost killed the franchise for good). One of the best things is how they reference small bits of lore (like Etemon vs Volcamon rivalry) or the New/Obscure digis they're putting on the show. (seriously, they brought FUCKING ATAMADEKACHIMON from the bandai vault after 15 years) The pacing fucked up the show.

@@digimonlover1632 I don't know what really happened in the community during the Fusion/Xros Wars era of Digimon, all I know is that Fusion/Xros Wars is the black sheep (or black stain if you want to call it) of the Digimon anime series. I watched the whole show (except for the Hunter season) and had mixed feelings on the quality. Generally, I think Fusion is the most hated series compared to others, but I can't pin down on why it is that made fans hated it to the point of saying it "nearly killed" the franchise. I can think of a few reasons: the dumb Fusion gimmick (especially with the Shoutmon series being just a slapdash of Digimon parts), the characters with questionable roles and personalities, the whole conflict and themes behind it, I don't know.

I do think whoever writing this series, is not very good and to me, this series suffers similar problems that the previous series had where there seems to be no real thought given to the plot or the bad guys motivations, I think Xros Wars Pt2 was the last great series of Digimon, I found the series prior to this one, a mess, clearly, no one had really taken the time to sit down and plot the show out, a good example of that, would be, they spend a large chunk of the series trying to open some gateway to a deeper level of the digital world internet or whatever it was and then after one battle, they pretty much abandon it as if it never mattered in the first place! My main problems with this series are: 1. The early evolutions to beyond Champion, they spent very little time on them and suddenly in much later eps, where Tai has access to Wargreymon, he struggling using just Metalgreymon 2. Dull villians or lack of a arc villian, sure we have this big bad setup for the final boss but since Devimon defeat, there has been no real villian with personalty 3. Much of the last few eps have been trying to travel to a single place but without a desent villian to help drive the narative, the eps feel more like filler or should of been put much earlier in the series after being reworked, to me the early part of the series feels rushed and all of a sudden they are at a point where its "OMG, we got so many eps left to fill, what do we do?" The best things about this series: 1. Nice clean animation, I like the evolution sequences 2. Break the chains song 3. Some of the background music

Speaking of Fusion/Xros Wars, can you explain to me how that series is so hated by nearly everyone to the point of saying it "nearly killed" the franchise? I watched the whole thing and I do find some glaring flaws with it, but I want to make sense of it all as nobody, or a few, has ever gone into detail or know why Fusion is such a black sheep of the Digimon anime series.

Im by no means a Animation Expert, but after showing some interest I started to pay more attention to it, and yeah. What they doing here is fare from good, or even average. The original Show,,who is realy bad in terms of Animation of on par whit 2020 in some Moments, and even the badly animated Moments at least looked better. Some of this Beam Effekts are criminal.

I will say the second half of the show helped me up to a 6/10, but the first half just felt like spectacle over substance. At the end of the day it's a kids show, but half of the cast in adventure 2020 felt like they were just legally obligated to be drawn in the background. I'm tempted to rewatch O1 and 02 (for what's probably the 5th or 6th time at this point) so that I can make a retrospective on them. Something that I told myself I probably wouldn't do because I think Billiam already did it well enough

Haven't watched Data Squad, but I think I'm willing to give the hot take of Frontier is a bit overhated/underrated.

Frontier wasn't that horrible. You underestimate how bad Fusion, Tri and the Reboot are. At least Frontier has some neat worldbuilding and music. The animation on the other hand...why. Why. Let's all blame Toei for being trash?

LOL @ all of you disappointed/surprised this remake sucks. You should of learned your lesson from past experiences FMA -B, Inuyasha/Yashahime, Sailor Moon Crystal, Dragon Ball Super all of these remakes/continuations suck so bad I've set my mind to avoid/boycott all anime remakes/continuations because I know they'll all suck so my expectations are as low as possible. I stick with the old. All the industry wants is to be Hollywood milk a franchise to make money being afraid to take risks and invent something new. I don't watch any anime after the early 2000's.

I was hoping it would be good because it looked promising at first but it turned out to be just fights, fights, and more fights when most of them weren't really necessary. Also was hoping for it to be good because there are some actually good reboots out there like the Ducktales reboot for example. That made me have faith on these reboots which I never thought I would.

@@jakoballfather224 DBS is fanfiction/fanservice imo GT was more original and creative than Super imo. Bad execution but good ideas. SSJ4 is way more of a creative design than the stupid hair color changes. Another issue I have with Super is after the Frieza Saga in Z it stopped being about other characters participating and more about power levels less about skills and story telling. With FMA-B my problem with that one is it's inconsistent in tone. The comedy overshadows and kills all the series moments. The happy ending feels fairy-tale like as opposed to the more grounded dark ending we got in the 0'3 version. But to each their own I guess..
