I've been forced into frugality the last few months, BIG TIME, and I'm actually finding it to be kind of liberating. I am excited about becoming more of a minimalist. I've been getting rid of stuff left and right up and donating most of it. If something is worth more than $100, I'll sell it, but if it's going to take up a lot of time to try to sell it is not worth it for me. I am donating, but wow this is interesting to listen to her! Love how her dog is a huge priority. I have 2 cats and definitely they're my priority!

I was speculating about this the other day. I have a friend who's the CEO of mid-sized company and he probably makes around 1 million a year. But he has to make that in order to fund his and his family's lifestyle. Every day, he gets up early and has to worry about his investors, his board, his employees, his company. He's the first to arrive and the last to leave. He works his tail off. Even when he's not working, he has a ton of social obligations that come with the territory. I don't have his money. But I have enough money to fund my lifestyle in perpetuity. I wake up whenever I want. I work whenever I want. I eat whatever I want. I don't have to associate with anyone I don't want to associate with. And I don't worry about anything. I would never trade places with him.

Just out of curiosity: what do you do for a living? I'd pretty much like to wake up when I want as well!
@justb4116
@justb4116 7 ай бұрын
@Ebakyza, people have different sleep patterns naturally and people like to 'have others accessible' during the hours when it's convenient for them. But let's not forget that it takes two to tango. It helps to be able to adjust either working hours (self employment helps, various industries have various schedules, if working shift position, stick to the shifts furthers away from your natural wake up time) or sleeping hours (consistency is key, no cheat days, lifestyle change, good night's sleep begins not when we put our head to the pillow, but waaay before that - in the morning, when one wakes up from previous night sleep). Often, going purely one way or another is not possible due various outside restraints. Sometimes it's gotta be a combination of both - keep adjusting sleep pattern while looking out for opportunities that are closer to your wanted shedule I wake up whenever I feel like, usually 4-6am I have a 7am alarm to remind myself that *the* last hour before departure to work starts *now* Hope this helps, it's tough but oh so worth it Sincerely, eX 4am-midnight, current 9-5

I've lived frugally for the past 5 years, and at 42, I've come to realize that money is a tool. I’ve worked so hard over the years to realize that if you don’t make money work for you, you can’t experience true freedom. I’m glad I found that out although it was later in life, but that marked the turning point in my finances.

I love this. One thing that’s often overlooked is the clean aesthetic of frugality and minimalism. This is exactly how I live my life, despite earning about three times the average salary in the U.K. I don’t even have a car and travel mostly by bicycle and public transport. I live in a nice house because it’s an investment but I have very little furniture, only the essentials. I don’t have a TV. I’m fortunate in that everything I enjoy is free or costs very little. I’ll buy quality products and look after them so they last a lifetime. Clothes are all plain, unbranded cotton. All the money I earn goes into high-interest savings and at this rate I’ll be able to leave the rat race at 45 and live for next to nothing for the rest of my life. Would it not be cheaper to heat your bread in a microwave? Just a thought. Great video, thank you.

They blow their money. On the other hand others think I’m dirt poor and give me things. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Side note, learning a skill/trade like plumbing, electrical, mechanic,etc can also help you if you are trying to be frugal. For example, my fiance is a frugal man and he is very handy around the house and he's a mechanic so he fixes anything that goes wrong with our cars. I know that not everyone has that technical ability (myself included) but with the magic of KZbin some things really can be done at home and save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. Again, I know not everyone is able to do that kind of work but it's worth it if you can, not to mention so much trade skill knowledge is being lost with the upcoming workforce.

This is exactly how me and my husband live. It is really good for our psychological wellness. Earlier this year he had a serious loss of income and we really didn't have any struggles at all because of the way we have our lives set up. We were fine on my income and just put slightly less into savings. When we have a sizable expense pop up, it does not stress us very much. If someone were to look at our bank accounts they would probably be very surprised because (for example) we drive old, paid off cars and get books and movies from the library only. I never try to push these frugal ways onto friends but I admit it's quite difficult at times for me to not say anything to friends who are in debt or financial struggles because of their choices. Mostly I want to suggest tips that they would not like such as subscribing to fewer streaming services or reserving meals out to 1 time per week.

I have to say this is one of the best “frugal” living posts I’ve seen so far. Most of the ones I’ve come across talk about buying cheap food (unhealthy full of chemicals and preservatives), and giving up basically everything (no car, no entertaining, etc). For me, being frugal is about making smart choices and setting your priorities straight. I watch what I spend, keep a spreadsheet budget, shop sales, use coupons, and refuse to follow trend. I select healthy and fresh foods, make A LOT from scratch (both good and hygiene items), and love to get together with family and friends at our homes. Every once in a while I do fun activities outdoors, but try to find ways to save by using coupons or rebates for example. When I travel, I purchase my plane tickets with frequent flyer miles I accumulate throughout the year, so my personal trips are all very cheap. Over the summer I flew to Europe from the US, round trip for $70.00!!! There are so many ways to stay on budget and still enjoy life.
@RedNicole22

Same! I hate when ppl encourage others to buy ramen noodles, and trash foods. Just bc it’s cheap now, doesn’t mean your future medical bills will be cheap eating trash foods. They totally miss that point. Your health should always be your number one priority IMO. @@19xxmichelle I did explain it in my post. I use frequent flyer miles to purchase my tickets. I do a lot of research in advance to find the dates and times that work for me and use less miles so that I’m not using up all my miles for one trip. I also check the connections and layover time. If I can find flights with long layover I will look for something during the day time so that I can get to see that location for free (if you have enough hours until your connection, you leave the airport and do something at that location that’s not too far away. Keep in mind you’ll need to go through security again so make sure you calculate your time correctly)

As a younger person, I was a single mother, and lived paycheck to paycheck. Now that my children are grown and I’m older and wiser, I am actually (at least for now) in a place where I can save pretty much every month. It has proven to be a life-changing experience for me, so much so that I no longer have that constant stress I used to have, wondering when something will come up for which I’m unprepared. I have found the beauty in saving for things I truly want, and that delaying gratification is actually worth it! Food is also a place where I would rather pay a little more to buy healthier, organic, etc. foods, and I rarely, if ever buy clothing if I’m not getting a sale. Am I a tightwad? I don’t think so. Many people helped me back when I had little to nothing, and if I can treat them now, and still be able to save, that brings me joy. Thanks. Great video!

When I go out with friends, it is not expected that one has to pay for everybody or each is buying rounds in turn, we pay our bills seperately, also in Restaurants . That is common in Germany. It takes the pressure away to have to spend a lot of cash for other peoples drinks when I only drink one or two lemonades. I can only drink so much lemonade or water. But it depends, do I just meet one or two friends or do I go out with a bunch of people like 5 or more. If I meet one friend for a coffee I dont mind paying her or his coffee and cake. I turn the heating down during the night as sleeping in a warm bedroom is unhealthy and causes me headache. Also when I leave the house, i do not turn the heating entirely off but only down as reheating a cold room cost more energy then just keeping the room temperature on low. Not heating during minus degrees causes the pipes to freeze and also mould will appear in the flat. The landlord can charge you for the damage if it is caused through not heating at all.

You are wisely frugal. I'm 72, debt-free, money in the bank, all due to being frugal. I work a part-time job, mostly to do something useful. Like you, my big "extravagance" is my dog. He's elderly, developed several medical condtions. He had a stay in vet ICU, specialist visits and ongoing medications. Because I watch my other spending, I have the cash for his care. Some people put their pets down, because vet bills and medications have gone through the roof. I prefer my dog's well- being to vacations, clothes, jewelry, etc. That's just me. I buy my eyeglasses online, saving hundreds of dollars. I cut my grass, saving on yard maintenance. I have a vegetable garden. Mostly air dry laundry. All clothing must be washable - no expensive and polluting dry-cleaning. KZbin workout videos - no gym bills. Rags instead of paper towels. Make disinfectant spray with hydrogen peroxide, use vinegar for most cleaning. Dr. Bronner's liquid castile soap for shampoo/body wash. The Ordinary for skincare products. Darn socks when they get holes. Get my hair cut at Walmart salon. Belong to Facebook "Buy Nothing" group. Make a lot of soup - filling, healthy and delicious. Use Amazon subscribe and save when it's truly saving - Prime membersip only when they offer it for free, periodically. No cable, just basic Roku and streaming trial periods. Negotiated internet price when competition offered better rate. That's a partial list. P.S. You can warm your aluminum wrapped bread in a covered cast iron skillet, rather than heating whole oven.

I would encourage everyone to learn to sew - specifically hand-sewing. Not to make clothes but to be able to confidently repair and remodel items. I bought a backpack but wanted it to be a sling so I opened up a couple seams, moved things, removed padding I didn't need (it was a camera bag) - sewed it up neatly with very strong thread and invisible stitching. It is so worth the couple hours it takes to learn basic stitches and the hand/eye coordination to easily make neat stitches. I am grateful that, on a whim, I decided to sew a blue satin shirt when I was 6 (no idea where I got the idea) - it didn't work out (as I didn't make a way to get into it) but I went on to make other costumy clothes, by hand. I can confidently repair anything in fabric and know when it is not worth it (when the fabric is so weak and deteriorating that, unfortunately, that pair of underwear is now trash). Stitches I use are straight stitch (rarely), heming stitch and backstitch (which is stemstitch on the other side).

I especially vibe with the electricity and gas usage stuff. I'm in the UK and am trying to be frugal. I bought a house in 2020 and my parents live with me so that makes it a bit easier to budget food and supplies, but it's so annoying because when you live with someone else you can't be frugal in the ways you want to be because it ends up affecting other people in your house. Or on the opposite side, my parents do stuff that I don't like and I have to live with it. They use WAY too much gas in the winter and when I ask them to simply put on warmer clothes they say "no, we're old, we can't do that." What?!!? Anyway it turns out we still use less than half the gas of an average household (which makes me wonder what the hell other households are doing), but double the electricity. Which should change soon because I got solar panels and a battery installed!

" I ask them to simply put on warmer clothes they say "no, we're old, we can't do that." What?!!?" - it's actually bizarre how some people can rationalize extremely weird behaviors. I've had guests at my house who essentially manhandle/destroy my property, and when I ask them WTF they're thinking, they act like it's no big deal or a simple mistake. Or a guest has a shower at my home and leaves water all over the bathroom floor, like WTF are you doing? they act like it's completely fine and normal. I don't know, some people seem to miss the most basic and obvious things and go through life thinking there's nothing wrong with their obviously flawed and/or inconsiderate behaviors.

I also unplug everything when not using. My fave ways to save money plus reduce plastic are by making my own products like dish soap and shampoo from soap nut berries, cleaners from vinegar, lotion and shaving cream from shea butter and coconut oil, using magnesium balls for laundry. I agree it is a balancing act. But its important to be comfortable, a cozy apartment/bed/room, a social life even if that means spending some money on a partner or friends, and making more money. As far as I'm concerned you're doing just fine. Looking at you I think I can still learn a few lessons but my savings have made it possible to retire from work relatively early. And it made it possible for me to work part time from the age of 34 (I'm 59 now). Even as a part timer my frugality made it possible to buy a house and pay the mortgage in 20 years instead of the going 30 years in The Netherlands. In 2010 we bought and had 18 solar panels installed, so the energy bill is relatively low. We're also low on gas for heating because we insulated the house to the max. More free time for ourselves, more time to spend with our children.

I struggle with overspending at Walmart and the grocery store. The house is paid for, and so is the vehicle. I had to set up a three - six month pantry. It’s very convenient between trips to the store, and I never run out of anything. That pantry was quite a job to put together. Lately I’ve been impulse buying items I may use some time in the future. Kinda silly that just because those items last forever, I gotta have it. I mean I could live on a lot less. But comfort, comfort, comfort has become my mantra since retiring from trucking.😊. My husband and me are very frugal living since 23 years - i am 48, my husband is 54 and because of frugal living we moved to Panama last year, bought a nice house and we dont have to work anymore. As now its dry season we will buy 2 motorcycles as we loved it in Germany. We never went to vacation until first move to panama for the permanent residency. We nearly go out for eating - i am high allergic to Glutamat and therefore i dont buy prepared food - I cook from scratch. As fish is here in Panama very cheap and good and fruits and vegetables which mosts grows here is also cheap - my grocery bill is half of it as in Germany and the food has much better Quality. Bananas, Plantains, Pine, Coconut, Zucchini, Tomatoes, Lime, Avocado i have from my own Garden and its permaculture here. Now Oranges get ready and on April i am happy when my 2 Mangotrees are ready. I preserve Food in Fridge, can my food, and when too much fruits i make jams, Lemonade or it dry it in the sun. I freeze all my carrot and onion peelings and save meatscraps and when i have a big batch - i cook my own broth. Even if you have to buy all the vegetables etc - learn how to cook and learn to preserve food. Many wast so much money because they dont know how to cook from scratch and/or waste food as it goes bad.

I always batch cook and make old fashion food like stew and dumplings 😋. I cook it in a slow cooker which is cheaper then using your hob. Then I dish out the meal for that day then batch the rest into small containers which I allow to cool then put into freezer. They are my ready made meals 😊. When I want to use them, I defrost them by putting them on the counter all day, then I just heat them up in a microwave which is cheaper than your cooker. I batch lots of other different meals too, some I do use my cooker.

Oh boy, you could be me when I was young! The principal purpose to me, personally, has always been security rather than 'stuff'. All I ever wanted was to own my own house, animals and to live in the country. Also, my greatest fear was being poor when I was old. I was mocked and sneered at for my ways, especially choosing a motor scooter over a car. I can tell you now, at the age of 70, living in a house paid in full years ago, that is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 2 miles from a World Heritage coast line, it was all worth it - big time. Unforeseen circumstances meant I was out of work, not likely to work again, at the age of 48 but I survived as by then I'd bought a second property so the income would let me go p.t. Despite never earning very much I am financially comfortable and get pleasure from being able to make donations to animal charities that matter to me, and to which, my estate will be left - but I to have cheaper off peak electricity and do laundry etc overnight or at weekends 🙂

I find this topic very interesting. I'm a SAHM and we live in a what I would consider a maximalist type of home. We are both sentimental about items we have and attach memories and feelings to them (working on that lol). We have lots of items around our home from toys for our daughter to the décor on the walls (or what I can get on there since we rent a trailer for the time being.) My husband is graduating college this upcoming spring and I don' t work so we live off our savings and the minimal income my husband brings in from his job. Our vehicles are both paid off and our bills are not extremely expensive in general but for our area I would say they could be better. I try to save money for us where I can, I.e. we don't use the AC or heat till necessary (we live in the south in the US so it gets extremely warm and we are not willing to let our baby overheat due to saving maybe a few dollars) and I also cook at home from scratch where I can when I have time. We also have two cats but they are in good health so they are not extremely expensive. We do eat out once or twice a week. I would say on average where I cut back on spending is the grocery store. I don't care for name brand items either as you're really just paying the extra money for the name not the actual product. Unless it is a brand where I know the quality is much significantly better then the other options and I can justify the price I won't buy it. I do buy some alternatives to dairy products like vegan cheeses etc. as I don't eat dairy due to lactose intolerance (my husband still gets dairy products and so does our daughter). I also generally will use my clothes till they are falling apart and don't ask for much except items that can be used around the home or kitchen as that is where I like to spend my time. I however do not cheap out on the things I buy for our daughter. I make sure to get the best value of course for her diapers etc. but I don't buy the cheapest just to save money as I don't want to harm her skin. Same with her foods and her wipes etc. I do buy lots of her clothes second hand as she is a fast grower and will quickly grow out of her current sizes. Not going to buy a new baby dress for $30.00 when I can buy several outfits for that price second hand.

I would start with the yeast- get fresh yeast in a bowl and add sugar (food for the yeast), small amount of salt and water (slightly on the warm side is good, room temperature is fine as well). I believe most people make the yeast-sugar-water mixture first, then add that to the dough. I would add milk and some butter to the dough as well. (helps make it softer) Make sure the dough is sticky and knead it for just a few minutes (till gluten develops) and leave it to rest for 3 - 4 hours while it's covered (till it doubles in size). Bake at low heat till you see it rise, lightly brush the upper portion with oil/ eggs and take it out once it looks ready to eat. The issue may have been - over kneading or bad yeast or inappropriate flour or too little moisture in the dough or not preheating your oven/ high temperature. Goodluck!

I'm curious to know if you actually save money making your own nut milk? In Canada nuts are sooo expensive. I haven't done the math yet, but I think it's actually cheaper to buy bulk from Costco than make your own. Let me know if you've done the math on that one. I do think it would be way healthier though. All the additives don't look so great in the store bought versions.

I don't heat my house except one room, but I love my electric mattress pad. My bed is a refuge, a mainstay. It's warm and comfortable while the rest of my shop is literally freezing. Hoodies rock.

You're definitely not a cheapskate. I have such respect for people who take their responsibilities seriously when it comes to pet parenting. I spare no expense for my cats & I leave the heat and air conditioning on for them. I'd freeze or boil, but I don't make my pets do it. I struggle the most with ordering food delivery. I have severe ADHD & I expend all my energy at work & no matter what strategies I've tried for having food at home I'm often too buggered & order food. I hate it though! It's so ridiculously expensive. This is the first video of yours I've seen, I loved it & am going to go to bed & watch your ither videos until I fall asleep 😊

Thanks Nocole it all makes good sense to me. My niece tipped me off to unplugging my appliances wgen I go on 10 day vacas. I believe animals are beloved family members and nothing is to good for them. It breaks my heart when people won't take them to the vet fir proper care. Have a goid week. 😊😊😊

This is people-centered (and animal-centered) living versus thing centered living and it's what I do as well. I get free organic produce from my local urban gleaners every week. My partner and I share an apartment with a friend. Shared tool sheds are a great way to not have to purchase tools, same with community cycling centers for bicycle upkeep. I'd love to hear more about price matching. Do you just tell the grocery store you found it cheaper and they honor that on the spot?

I’m a spender, so I watched your video for inspiration. If I can just change my life a bit to move in your direction I think I’ll be happier. Thank you for making it.

Nice video Nicole! 🤗 I'm sure you will get a lot more subs very soon - you have a great style of delivery! I 'm definitely hitting that subscribe button. I live about 45 minutes drive North of Toronto so not too far from you. I agree with you 100% - you're so smart and are starting at a young age with frugal living. Maybe you could show us some of these meals that you cook for yourself or friends when you entertain? I love seeing what other people cook and eat!LOL Your foil reuse comment made me chuckle. I have a ziploc freezer baggie that I have been reusing for my cycling lunch wrap about 3 years !! It's finally wearing out - I just come home, wash it and let it dry well. 🤣

I chose my job strictly for the schedule, and the freedom it would allow me to spend time with my daughter and any more children we may have in the future. Good on you for prioritizing your own well being. I feel like that's a huge bright side to our generation and our outlook on life.
