The NFL is testing out the first helmet to be made with 3D printing. Each Riddell helmet is custom-made for a player based on a scan of his head. Former players like Peyton Manning are excited about the comfortable custom fit and potential to make football safer.
NFL players on almost every team are testing out a new type of helmet made with 3D printing. Each Riddell helmet is custom-made for a player based on a scan of his head. Silicon Valley-based Carbon prints seven resin pads for inside the helmet, each with a unique lattice pattern that bends and flexes to the exact shape of the player's head.
Former 49er Brent Jones is an investor, and former Bronco Peyton Manning has tested it and is excited about it, according to Carbon CEO Joseph DeSimone.
This spring, the NFL will release results to show if the new custom helmets are safer than other models. The Riddell SpeedFlex Precision Diamond helmet will be available for purchase at the professional and collegiate level later this year.

So as soon the the concussion scandal hit the NFL a couple years ago all of a sudden lots of new advanced helmet designs come to market, surely if the NFL really cared about it's players these would have been an ongoing process. Still it's good to see the progress now.

This is a great idea, but until it spreads to all levels of football, the impact they may have might not be as great as advertised. By the time a player makes it into the pros, he has been getting hit in the head for over a decade already. So I'm looking forward to see how they will mass produce this idea if in fact is safer than the current helmets
@MrZane777
@MrZane777 5 жыл бұрын
I'm having a hard time seeing how this is going to advance anything within concussion related injuries. My stance is yes it may disperse the impact but the momentum for the hit all goes to your head still which is what causes concussions in the first place.

The only thing that will make American Football safer is removing helmets. We have a fraction of these problems in Australia and we have 3 codes of football (Aussie rules, Rugby union and league) and don't even try to tell me that there's less impact or physicality in our sports. Removing the helmet means players protect themselves and adjust how they play accordingly. It will also reduce the barrier of entry into these sports with less equipment costs.

Rugby tackles are way different than gridiron tackles. Plus, if you've ever played offensive or defensive line before, you'll know the value of wearing a helmet. Eh, more marketing BS. There's been no change in how you absorb and disperse energy. The only thing this tech could probably do is lighter, more breathable and better fitting helmets for NFL players. I don't think it matters what football helmets are made out of. The bottom line is that it's just a violent sport and concussions are inevitable. They said that this technology will be available soon for all NFL and college athletes. What about high school athletes? I suffered from 2 concussions alone my senior year. Plus how many high school concussions go undiagnosed every year? In all honesty, I love the sport of football, but nobody should play it. The human body wasn't designed for that kind of beating. In my mid 30's now, and I regret ever playing. If I had a son, I would steer them towards baseball and basketball if they wanted to be a student athlete.

It’s about how the brain moves in the skull, they are not breaking skulls they are ruining their brains. Probably the best thing would be to remove the helmets and shoulder pads because that would reduce the speed and the amount of Impacts. But If we really care about athletes then all fight sports would ban cloves, back in the day of bare knuckle boxing nobody got knocked out simply because you can’t punch someone’s face without breaking your hand.

I think if you play football your in entire life, you have to know that its messing up your head in some way. I played football 1 year and I got headaches every night after practice. To blame the NFL for your head injuries knowing its bad for you is like going to McDonalds every day and blaming them for your heart disease.

"a much safer product"? yeah, probably not... until helmet tech can figure out a way to stop the brain from striking the inside of the skull upon impact, i'm not sure just how much more "helmet improvements" can be accomplished.

Maybe just stop head butting each other?? No other contact sport in the world deliberately use their heads to stop each other?
