MASS OF THE AGES is a trilogy that explores the richness of the Traditional Latin Mass through stunning cinematography and inspiring stories. But it’s not just a beautiful. It’s also an investigation into the surprising events that led to the creation of the New Mass. MASS OF THE AGES will give you a deep appreciation for your Catholic faith.
Catholic faith shouldn’t feel ordinary. We feature the Mass like you’ve never seen it before, with insights from profound experts, and inspiring stories of traditional Catholics. The Mass of the Ages will surprise you.
Every Catholic knows about Vatican II, but very few know about what happened after Vatican II to construct the New Mass (the Novus Ordo). MASS OF THE AGES will reveal the surprising details about how the new Mass was created.

Our priest put the communion rail back in. We can receive on the tongue at the communion rail. He also says the Mass with his back to us, and he got rid of all the extraordinary ministers. He now has only himself and the deacon or one acolyte to give out the Eucharist. Some people left our church but a lot of people have come because of how traditional he is. He has no problems speaking against abortion and same sex marriage, and talks about confession all the time. We are very blessed to have him for our Pastor.

I'm in Ireland. Sad to say that if a parish priest brought about such changes he would be hanged by popular and local opinion. He would be reported to his bishop and he might even get a negative mention in the papers - people here have a habit of reporting priests to the media when they are 'too' Catholic. For the sake of 'unity' he would be ordered to return to the status quo. Still, it is good to hear that you have access to reverence where you are from. God bless your priest. Long may it continue and may it spread. Thank you for sharing some good news on this issue. Hopefully such attitudes towards the liturgy will spread to Ireland some day!

Edwin, I just can’t believe that people would report your priest. That is so very sad. What happened to Ireland, they once were very Catholic. We have many churches in the US too where Mass sure is not what it use to be. I was brought up when we only had the Latin Mass, then things changed. However, I was able to find our parish with such a wonderful very holy and traditional priest. Even during the lockdown with the virus he never shut our church down, you could go in everyday for adoration. Also he said his own Mass everyday silently and you could go in the church when he was saying Mass. He heard confessions all during the lock down. You would be shocked how many people would be in line for confession. I pray they don’t move him somewhere else. I will pray for you and your parish.

If I go to NO it is because the roads are bad and don't want to risk the ice. ( I travel 63 miles in one direction for the TLM.) I know I have to make my Sunday observance, but going to NO is very upsetting to me.

The TLM more fully expresses Catholic belief and dogma. It has nothing to do with nostalgia. The TLM has such reverence and solemnity towards the Bless Sacrament. Is it no wonder that people are drawn to it? May the TLM grow, it can never be taken away from us. It is our inheritance.

I have a question if you don't mind. Before the Vatican 2 fiasco, was the Latin mass under attack? I have talked to a couple older folks and they said they didn't care for it when they were younger. Being a young adult going to TLM for the first time, that astounds me as it is so beautiful and reverent. Maybe back then the priests didn't treat it with reverence? IDK just wanted to get your thoughts

@@mathieuconklin3146 You have an honest question. The Mass had become simply ritual without the heart of our Lord, at least in the region I lived in. Attending Mass for the Eucharist in all practical purposes appeared to be less important than the "theatrics" (I know every movement and word has meaning) of the priest speaking a language no one knew. But, priests did often rushed through it and often mumbled. High Mass was once on a Sunday with a "Low Mass" about 2-3 times - and all before noon: no Saturday evening and no Sunday evening. It was a very different time so people didn't simply go to another parish and church shop, and there was no televised Mass. Some people likely became discouraged or angry, attended out of habit, and over time with families to raise slipped away to a church service somewhere else that was understandable and appeared at least to be a loving worship of the Lord, not the ritual and not a "spectator sport" as an older friend in her 90s recently told us at a meeting.. Everyone has memories, and that was her very sad memory! I think improvements were necessary, and then because we are all fallen human creatures problems with the Mass in English happened too. Sometimes a correction is necessary because the Church is alive, and then a correction of the correction is needed. But God is with us today. He is alive with us today. Yesterday is in the past. Hearing and reading any Catholic say s/he feels sorry for any Catholic attending the Mass in English is to me judgmental and unnecessary. On the other hand, it is mild compared to some of the hateful things I've read. and heard recently So, just my lived opinion as I try to understand a division among a holier than though group that doesn't appear to believe that God is in charge and must have an overarching purpose and lesson we are all supposed to learn. Be well.

@@lucillejerome5511 yes, some never liked the Latin mass and attendance after a certain age wasn't great. They made changes because of that. I went to Latin Mass first time because of Corona. And I almost cried, ev.thing was so beautiful it was like coming home. And I realized that because they pray to Mary and St. Michael at the end, Satan has never succeeded to lure the priests into changing the holy mass. Plus, hearing about Blessed Mother and St. Michael keeps the people remembering that we need to defend ourselves. In latin mass, they never let the defenses down. Now even my JohnPaul 2 seems a bit liberal to me, I realize it is necessary to talk about the dangers as well as the good things of our religious life. So did the Lord, he warned of the devil, we must imitate him, the priests must imitate him

@@jared5329 So you're not old enough to remember the days before the vernacular mass when the mass was always in Latin and almost no one understood most of what was said, a few of the most common responses, perhaps excepted though I'll bet you plenty of Catholics didn't even understand those. The Latin mass was fine if you understood Latin as I'll bet fewer than 5% of Catholics did. Why pretend that the mass that your list of people of the past was the "original" mass? The history of the Catholic liturgy didn't begin in Latin, one of the reasons the Kyrie was said in Greek. Though I remember that was news to many Catholics who thought it was in Latin. You aren't interested in Christian worship, you're into dress up and let's pretend we're living in the Middle ages (when the mass would have been quite different from what you mean by the "Latin mass") or the Renaissance or the Baroque Church or the 19th century or the disgustingly phony Neo-medievalism that came in with Pius X and, thank God, died with Pius XII. The Latin Mass is a fetish of neo-fascism. There, I said it. Now tell us just how young and inexperienced in the Latin liturgy you are. John, that makes me so sad. I really don’t understand why they ever removed the communion rail. I grew up going to Catholic school with wonderful nuns who really taught us our faith. Then after I graduated high school Vatican II came down and everything changed, I remember being so confused. The nuns taught us not to even chew or touch the Eucharist with your teeth, now people were putting in your hand. I was in total shock. I new 100% this was Jesus and this had to be wrong. I felt horrible receiving in the hand, then I made up my mind I’m not doing this and have always received on the tongue. Then I found the parish I go to now and was amazed to hear this priest talk about Divine Mercy and confession which I hadn’t heard in years. So I left my parish and came here. Then our priest put the communion rail back and said we could knee and receive on the tongue. I knew I was in the right place. I wish every Catholic Church would go back to how it is suppose to be. People received in the hand for centuries and Jesus gave it to his apostles in the hand. A Dominican Priest on EWTN said the mouth isn't "better" It's dirty, full of sin from his years in confession, spews gossip, sexual sins, judgement etc. Early Christians received communion in the hand for at least seven centuries. There is no historical question about this issue. The question of what we ought to do today is not the same question as what Christians did in the first seven centuries, but we must avoid sweeping generalizations about what counts as reverent

This is just crazy to think one is more dirty than the other. In the hand people are so callous when receiving, just act like it’s nothing. Not all people but many. My sponsor was the instrument that God used to bring me into the Roman Catholic Church - years before he became my sponsor. The first catechetical materials that he fed me were authored by Dr. Hahn. I was blown away by his insights. His unpacking of Christianity was at least an entire plateau above anything I had encountered prior. In my book, he ranks among the best of the notable Catholic theologians and apologists of the 1.5 centuries. I attended my first TLM about 3 years ago. I intended to reserve the TLM as an occasional treat for me, but I got tired of Novus Ordo Masses brimming with liturgical abuses and warm-fuzzies borderline-Marxist homilies - and let’s face it: the Novus Ordo Mass is downright subversive and ugly compared to the TLM (exactly as Annibale Bugnini intended, in my humble opinion). The TLM is only available in a few locations in the country. Davao City, Cebu City, Bohol and Bacolod are the only places outside of Luzon. In those places the Mass is held in small side chapels. Not even the Cathedrals and Basilicas offer it. That leaves a huge portion of the Catholic population. Is it your belief that the majority are deprived of a valid and licit Mass? www.latinmassdir.org/country/ph/

@@mbugal Thanks for the reply but that is a distorted view of authority. You can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig. No matter who says the NO is a Catholic form of worship does not make it so. It does not comport with Catholic doctrine and actually militants against it. Thus it is not Catholic and should be avoided if at all possible. Authority has its limits and logic, reason, and Tradition are divinely imposed limits on the bishops and even the Pope. We are after all witness to a pope who apparently says God is pleased with Pachamama worshipers and those in other false faiths, there is no hell, the death penalty is immoral (got the huge majority of US bishops to vote in support of that heresy, btw), and he has spouted all sorts of other heresies in public and private. That he said such things does not make any of them true even though he can find plenty of bishops to agree with him. As Catholics, we must oppose heresies that are opposed to the Catholic faith no matter the source. “If a Future Pope Teaches Anything Contrary to the Catholic Faith, Do Not Follow Him!” (Bl. I like to use a food analogy. Is steak a food? Yes. Is cotton candy a food? Yes. Both are validly considered food. If you constantly eat one, it will sustain you. If you constantly eat the other, it will not. If we look at which Mass built the church and which is destroying the church, it doesn’t take much effort to determine which Mass is comparable to a steak and which is comparable to cotton candy. All valid, but not equal is sustaining.

I recently returned to the church, and have returned many times before, but everytime i attended mass over the last decade, something felt off. To be honest i was ill informed and my grandmother passed away (who was the rock for catholic belief in my family) So i could not ask her questions. And by the grace of god i realized, very recently ALL of those years i went to church with her as a child, she was taking me to latin mass...... Talk about epiphany, i know this sounds foolish but i had no idea until i began to truly study my faith their was 2 different masses..... It was so inspired..... All the times i went to mass as an adult (honestly here and there) it seemed off, and i believed this was not for me..... even going to Protestant denominations (that is whole other story)........ It is also why i now know she always said ROMAN Catholic.........

I recall pre Vatican II. The High Latin Mass was said once on a Sunday and on Holy Days of Obligation. Otherwise the Latin Mass was simple and prevalent on Sundays and weekdays. Is a worshipping priest only at the High Latin Mass. If you only value the High Latin Mass, then there's a problem. We don't worship any Mass. We attend Mass to worship our Lord and receive the eucharist (provided we have a clean conscience/have been to confession). Watching the 7 minute The Veil Removed is an excellent reminder of what we are truly all about.

I am a fan of Dr. Scott Hahan. I’ve always wanted to ask. If his grandma was Catholic and he broke her rosary beads? What happened in the journey of faith of his parent, that was the child of his grandmother? Just praise be to God. That Scott reclaimed his family’s faith. How many out their have lost this original faith? And yet many haven’t reclaimed this faith, from their family tree 🌳. I’ve see many artists out there on programs, discover their Catholic roots. And not reclaim it, for their own salvation sake of their soul?! Many of us in the Catholic family. Have been enriched, and revived, possibly motivated by Dr. Hahn’s testimony!! Dr. Hahn please pray for our Catholic Church. We struggle with these many scandals and confusing ways by our religious leaders! You have helped us understand! It is expected, and it will continue. Pointing out our own personal concerns to protect ourselves from fouls teachings. To recognize it, and don’t fall for it. Even Our Lord Jesus, shows us to studying is word, will bring us closer to him. And the journey of life will continue to help us, and verify many blessings of scripture. Mr. Hahn is just marvelous, you can just fill his urgent message!!! I’ve cried of emotion, from the emotion of his desire to help many us be saved!! He is like saying, please listen!!! ¡Maravilloso! Definitely the best I've heard when it comes to the Extraordinary Form. Dr. Hahn is filled with the Holy Spirit and is a man who lives what he prays. I loved his “catholicity” in the full sense of the word: firm in his position but attentive to what God is doing in history and in the world. This video transmits peace, serenity, abandonment in the Providence, but at the same time an urgency to fight and seek that God be adored as he deserves. Dr. Hahn’s emphasis is on the reality of what actually happens at any valid Mass: if what we believe by faith happens on the altar, our worship must be in accordance with what is happening before our eyes. Wonderful!

I love Dr. Scott Hahn, (he was very instrumental in my return to the Catholic Church from New Age lies and deceptions in the early 90’s) but I don’t think he answered your last question Cameron.... Let me share: My husband and I have been going to the Traditional Latin high mass to a parish in Florida every Sunday for 2 years now. It’s a 50 minute drive each way. (Great for our morning offering and rosary in Latin, snd time to catch up with each other!) We then stay for the social hour afterwards which usually becomes the social 2 or 3 hours. We love it, and have met so many wonderful Glad Trad families. Not one of them are ‘Mad Trads’!! The graces we experience throughout the week are amazing! We are now truly living our Catholic faith with confession usually twice a month and have become ‘on fire’ to bring others to Jesus, and His true church. We cannot take credit for this change we feel and see in each other, as we are now being transformed by all that we experience in action, beautiful words and music every Sunday. It is a heavenly blessing that we did nothing to deserve, but we are so thankful for! We just watched episode II of Mass of the Ages, and although we acknowledge that the Novus Ordo is valid, we truly believe that the Mass of the Ages is what Jesus ordained for His people!

As a new Catholic, I love listening to Dr. Hahn. I was a Protestant for almost 49 years. I did attend a Latin Mass with friends many years ago, and found it beautiful. It should always be available to the faithful, and I intend to experience that again. Wouldn't it be a great thing to celebrate the Mass in Aramaic? I would love to experience that! However, we also see the Holy See's wisdom in emphasizing the Novus Ordo, so that the unchurched, even if illiterate, can walk into a Mass and understand what is going on. St. Paul discussed his concern about this in 1 Corinthians 14. We on the inside need to be edified. There is a broken world out there, and those who labor there under such heavy burdens...they are our mission.

I like how Scott says he wonders if the Latin church goers would want it if they grew up in it. Many years ago didn't. Having something different and liking the reverence etc is nice but many non Latin masses are like that. I've heard comments say if my church was like St Patrick's I'd go all the time or if I lived in Rome, the list goes on. It's all esthetics. I want incense, I want music, I want rails. The Eucharist is always the same, even in simple non Latin churches in many convents, in friaries in NY, in simple countries. I think when we make the outside effects the real reason of the mass, it gets cloudy. I understand the beauty of my reverent non Latin mass and the regular Latin mass but I'm there for Christ. I don't need Latin, I don't need incense, I don't need chants. I've heard Trads say they just wont go if they take away their mass.....not a good thing.

Surely. One of the best comments I've read on this whole subject on all of those videos on the subject!... I was born and raised on a, then very progressive leaning, Roman Catholic Charismatic Renewal parish. One of those some of the rad trads now call as apostate, heretic quarters of the Church and the actual cause of the Church's decline. Roman Catholic Charismatic Renewal is arguably the largest worldwide movement claiming some 160 million followers worldwide, or more than 10% of the total Catholics, while TLM struggles to count some 28 million, or 2% of the totals, including SSPX and the Sedevacantists all to themselves. It's one of the expressions of the faith as valid as one another, including TLM. Problem is: TLM movement, mostly requests to be the unique valid possible expression of the faith, while all the others refer to themselves as non exclusive parts. This is where the problems arise. I'm not against TLM by itself, but coming myself from a minority; the Charismatic Renewal, which I've left when I realized that the Faith is larger than a movement that wants Happiness from the Spirit to renew the Church; I've learnt to humbly respect one another on the Faith when going on outside the movement's Churches. That was one of my best Lessons of Life I received from my wonderful late Charismatic Renewal Priests I had there!... Today I'm a regular rural area reverent Novus Ordo parishioner. From time to time I attend happily one or another Charismatic Renewal Mass. It's a joy nonetheless. It links me to my origins... But my Faith is far larger than a sinlgle part of it!... My way or the high way is not an option here. Humble understanding of Human Diversity is. This is why I so appreciate Pope Francis good pastoral care advice model of leadership! And want a whole experience, not just a tiny part of it!... Have a nice day!...

@@reginasong5733 Thanks for this and your other comment. My experience sounds like yours. While I think most in FSSP and ICKSP are of goodwill and are allies to the extent they want to restore the Church, it is not helpful to turn a blind eye and remain silent regarding the incalculable harm that Vatican II and the Novus Ordo have caused and are continuing to cause to the Church. Yet from all I have observed, this is precisely what these groups do. This is only an analogy and not meant to be insulting, but I think of groups like the FSSP and ICKSP like a battered spouse with several children who stays quiet, trying not to upset her abusive husband while earnestly praying he changes. SSPX on the other hand, I think of as the eldest son who confronts his father demanding his father act like a father because he is terrorizing the mother and younger siblings. While the bellicose SSPX has gotten far more flak for wanting to maintain tradition than these pacifist groups, which of the three groups is more likely to succeed in the long run, and, more importantly, which is more faithful to Christ and the Church? The one that eliminates confusion by naming the enemies and that believes there are hills worth dying on or the ones that pretend everyone is a friend and there are no hills worth dying on other than maintaining good relations with the enemies of Christ no matter the cost? Is not that the mentality traditional Catholics are seeking to escape from? The war is squarely with Vatican II and the Novus Ordo and the huge number of casualties they have claimed in the form of lost souls is nothing less than a tragedy. I think traditionalists must recognize this and tell the truth and refuse to be pacifists in this war. Anything less is untenable. Thank God more people are reaching this conclusion every day and that, for the first time in decades, we finally have a handful of bishops stating the obvious about the destructive anti-Catholic principles behind Vatican II and the Novus Ordo. "But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil." Matthew 5:37.

Parishioners have the option to still receive the Body of Christ as they wish (e.g., standing, in the hand or on the tongue), but a kneeler is brought out to encourage the opportunity to kneel and receive on the tongue. St. Margaret Mary offers both the Ordinary and Extraordinary form, and all Ordinary form Masses are ad orientem.

I think the key error on this "Active-Actual Participation" issue is the assumption that the Church is referring to EXTERNAL/EXTERIOR action. Nope, the key to everything is INTERIOR participation. And the silence of the TLM is what best fosters interior participation. If each offering of the Holy Mass is Calvary re-presented outside of space and time, then let's be like Holy Mary...who didn't do or say anything at Calvary. She was just THERE, joined to Her Divine Son interiorly. I think that's the point...for us to just BE there.

I haven’t attended a Latin Mass yet but planning to. Scott Hahn was part of my conversion to the Church. Interesting to hear of the different kinds of Masses including NO ad orientem that he attends at his parish. Good point about convergence which can unite us. Wonderful interview, everything said helped me understand more. Scott Hahn’s faith and joy are precious to me. I’ve felt that joy, it’s a euphoria, when my son was born. As if all things are possible, potential is never ending, possibilities are endless & so much to anticipate and look forward to. Hard to explain in words but Scott Hahn captures that spiritual, Catholic state of being. Thank you.

This is great news. Always wondered why Scott didn’t attend TLM after all his studies. Honestly Never made sense to me. I stand corrected. I don’t think we fully appreciate the eventual ripple effect this news will have in the Novus Ordo Church once they get word about Scott Hahn attending TLM. Maybe they’ll now be more open and follow. PS. Love listening to Scott Hahn teach and love his books. He is an honorable and godly man. Deo Gratias. That being said, I don’t think we Traditionalists will “cease and desist” criticizing what goes on in the New Mass. The disrespect to Our Lord in the Eucharist through Communion in the hand, no Communion plate, every Tom and Jerry handing out Communion, rushing through elevating Our Lord at the consecration, etc. is a serious problem and needs to be criticized. What is more...The whole intention by Bugnini of having an ecumenical Mass and taking out everything “offensive” to nonCatholics, the fact that it was not a “received” Rite of the Church, that is, part of Sacred Tradition, but was created in the 60s by a liturgical committee after Vatican II, etc. etc.

communion on the tongue began in the Middle Ages? not in the early Church

Kurt Whiteley Keep researching the historical “when’s” and especially the “why’s” of Communion on the tongue. Research all the other Liturgical Rites also.

@@pablodee9024 I think I understand the "why's" and I see the same arguments from people who feel unworthy to take the Eucharist at all. so then the "when" becomes more important to me. and the "when" is the Middle Ages

@@kurtwhiteley481 The council of Saragossa (380): Excommunicated anyone who dared continue receiving Holy Communion by hand. This was confirmed by the Synod of Toledo (400). This indeed is received by means of the mouth which we believe by means of faith (St Leo) 6th Ecumenical Council, at Constantinople (680-681): Forbade the faithful to take the Sacred Host in their hand, threatening transgressors with excommunication. The Synod of Cordoba (839): Condemned the sect of “Casiani” for their refusal to receive Holy Communion directly into their mouth The Synod of Rouen (878) said: “the Eucharist may never be placed in the hands of a lay man or woman, but only in the mouth.” Not saying there was no development here but this is far from being a middle ages invention.

I’m in awe at the sincerity that Dr.Hahn exudes while explaining his preference for the Latin mass, my disagreement with him not withstanding. Personally I am happy with a mass that looks like the Lord’s Supper. I don’ t want a mass that provides a setting for me to say a rosary. I can do that at home. So when I hear how much Dr. Hahn likes the TLM, I wonder if he wouldn’t like the Orthodox liturgy even more. Because, having watched that liturgy, I saw a mass where the faithful can barely see, or hear, anything that the “ad orientum” priest is doing within the confines of the inner sanctum, where he consecrates the elements, but rather must be content with viewing a plethora of icons on the walls on either side of that inner sanctum.
