One would hole the graphite tip between the removed plug wire boot and a ground; the spark would jump from the positive to the pencil to the ground. I passed emissions inspection once in an old Camry. The first time I went i waited in line for 20+ minutes and when I decided to rev it a bit, since it was idling so long, a thick blue ploom of smoke came out and blew through their facility, prompting a guy to come out and send me & my old Camry packing! I added STP to bring the oil level up a bit & went back another day and won! Obviously old rings and valve guides had let thin oil accumulate in the engine during the long idle and the STP took care of that problem for me that day!

i got one of those bore scopes last year for Christmas and i was able to use it to find and pick out a chunk of metal that had been sucked into the #1 cyl on an old GMC big six. I've used STP oil treatment only a few times. Only when I was trying to treat an issue. I bought a thunderbird turbo coupe from a widow that sat for a little over a year. I done oil change right away and only was able to drain about three quarts out. Dipstick read in range, no low oil light so i figured sludge. I used the blue bottle STP oil treatment for 1k miles and done another oil change and this time almost full capacity came out. All good after that. We put another 60k on it before selling. Bought a top line Intrepid with 3.5 V6 years later with 88k that had a tapping noise only when it sat for more than twelve hours. I used the yellow bottle STP treatment and the nose went away no matter how long the car sat. I never retreated either vehicle after the first treatment. Both were treated for 1k miles then just used high mileage oil after that. I think it works good.

Till the compression ratio from the lead in the squish space kills it. Takes a few hundred tanks of fuel to do it. In a Cessna 172 that is like 1500-2000 hours or close to the life of the engine anyway
@blackhawks81H
@blackhawks81H 2 жыл бұрын
@@theairstig9164 Yeah but it's an old jeep 4.0... And as a guy who prefers LS blocks in everything.. Even I'll admit that engine is legendary for lasting forever. Very hard to kill. Plus the guy who runs that jeep that way is himself a licensed A&P mechanic, and has Major airframe and powerplant service for maintaining his fleet of commuter planes on premises at his airport, where he also lives. 4 mechanics on payroll. So fixing any long term issues it may cause, for him is trivial/costs nothing. There's no emissions tests or anything like that around there, and there's literally one cop. Who's nearest backup is 30+ miles across open water. Lol. So he tends to just kinda keep to himself and be a friendly guy since there's zero crime over there anyway. I guess someone could make the argument that he's harming the environment or something by running that gas in his jeep... But he'd probably argue its negligible compared to the two O-540s each of his 5 planes has. Lol

I could still find tetraethyl lead fuel additive in the late 80s, but I don't know if it can still be found today or not. We used to get 110 octane airplane gas from the airport and then add a can of lead. No idea what it took the octane up to. We used to race on the roads long before "street racing" became a thing. Steven Vanheel check oil pump pick up o ring. They leak letting air in oil. Common issue on 5.3. Also after 06 there is a mini oil screen under oil pressure sender causing lifter noise and trouble code for low oil pressure. Just fixed two.

I love your videos and visit the old ones cause they are entertainment and since my life now is setting at a desk wishing I could walk... yada yada, loved the ending "broke the horse off the hood thing" I can relate to. Back in the day, just before the service, I have this 55 chev that runs sorta good, a little tired from wide open throttle episodes, (ran the dog shit out of it) parked the car in front of the local burger stand. This is a place where hot girls and big guys protecting their turf are and we are local bad boys. I have duel exhaust and straight pipes and no hood for this particular days fun. So the car is running fair again as said and goosing the pipes to get said girls attention which was getting the sly look but they can't cause their jock boyfriends are super protective. How does this pertain to STP you might ask? Well while leaning over the fender and controlling the gas by hand, I slowly so it doesn't kill the engine (stop running) start adding this wonder drug to the carb straight from the can down the open four barrel carb and now it is smoking (could of done this with any oil) and its coming out of said duels, pouring out is a better description, and so it doesn't die wait till it clears enough to continue pouring and by time done in say five minutes or more... filled that burger stand up with smoke and a four alarm fire drill couldn't get that much smoke in the place. Fire trucks are on their way along with cops and we are out of there, gone like bad habits and laughing so hard I like to shit myself. The fire department goes in with fire hoses pouring the water to the place, finishing what we didn't cause now they have real problems and everyone inside is soaking wet but to the jocks defence, description fit my car and I went to jail where sooner than later the guy who called the cops on me was my cellie. I put knots on his brain box and so he wouldn't testify against me. Longer and better story short version, I served in the military with him (all of us drafted) and we were good friends... STP was the right choice for making smoke in a large quantity and Hall's drive in was remodeled. I swear to god that this true

Soaking the valves in kerosene will work as well, the best thing I have found is cellulose thinners for cleaning carbon and gum from engine parts works better than any proprietary cleaners and is a fraction of the price. Just keep of certain plastics.

Flathead motors have the valves in the block next to the cylinders; the spark plug port is usually not over the cylinder, hence the fake-out that every cylinder was at TDC!

@ty2010
@ty2010 5 жыл бұрын
that is an issue a lot of times, too many like to try and tune by ear and make the flatheads sound like OHV which is entirely too much advance...they end up running hot and losing head gaskets
@ty2010
@ty2010 4 жыл бұрын
@Dave Micolichek For OHV since they run less efficient that way and make it up with more intake. Flatheads heat up more because the combustion is in there longer and they're cammed for later ignition. See boards on flatheads. Think of it this way, hold an RV engine at 6k like you're running a race car and it'll overheat, try to pull a load at 2k with a race engine and it'll overheat.
@ty2010
@ty2010 4 жыл бұрын
@Dave Micolichek Generally yes but not necessarily. Compression ratio, cam duration and time come into play. Also, operating outside the ideal RPM range which it was designed to carry a load, this is why we have VVT and CVT ;)
@ty2010
@ty2010 4 жыл бұрын
@Dave Micolichek And flatheads won't overheat with advance added if you use aftermarket aluminum heads, better radiator and modern coolant. They run even better if you use a little longer duration cam with some advance on that as well. However, it'll no longer run on kerosene

@22:34. The TEL in that era engine (fuel) is primarily for the valve seats, not preignition - I doubt that engine is running better than 7-1/2:1 compression. Mid sixties iron of course a different animal.

I recommend reminding people to use a funnel to pour those treatment liquids into their tanks as I have seen clean coat completely dissolved by that stuff before. Also, old engines run better once the scale/rust gets knocked off old exhaust/intakevalves that sat open for years and the compression increases too after a short bit of running.
@pjbth
@pjbth 6 жыл бұрын
Gas itself is pretty good solvent and excellent at dissolving stuff. Maybe next time do a control of straight gas vs the cleaners to see if they are any better than the gas you are putting in the tank to begin with. I'm going to guess it works as well or better if you just sit the valves in it.

After the testing looked ok after hearing it pop up out the carb I would check for exhaust restricted, water in the gas or timing is off some where just guessing after 7 minutes into video. Now I can finish to see whats actually going on. Being a antique mechanic meaning old fart .I Love your videos ...

With these old cars its good to test the condition of the engine with a Vacuum Gauge. Just connect it to the inlet manifold and read the gauge, then compare the result with the chart provided and get a quick diagnosis.
