I used to have a wonderful loving smaller dog but, whether or not through my own inability to socialise him adequately, he tended to be aggressive towards other male dogs. In our walks I always had him in a leash of course, but over 15 wonderful years the amount of fights he got into with unleashed dogs was incredible. Almost every single one of those owners would let their dogs approach mine no matter what I said, confidently saying that their dog "is a sweetheart ", "harmless" etc. Ive had to kick several of them quite brutally which I absolutely hate to do. I really wished I could just kick the owners.

i only ever walk my dog unleashed in the very early morning on empty back roads and i always have a leash with me. i take training very seriously and i think walking unleashed is important for him to learn how to listen to me without physical restrictions, but the actions described in this comment are deplorable and irresponsible. when dogs get into fights they rely on their instincts not their training and i never trust owners like that, too many times have i heard people say oh he’s well trained and i look at their couch and the corners are shredded or he’s super sweet just for him to go hog wild as soon as they let him off leash it’s so irresponsible to not leash around people and animals even as an owner who actually does train my dog well.

this exactly, I'm a horse-back rider and unleashed dogs come up to me all the time. This used to not be an issue as my horse is pretty well behaved, but then one of them bit her. Since then she absolutely hates dogs and will kick them if they get close. So every time I try to yell and warn people, but of course they don't listen, or worse the dog doesn't come to them on command and bounces right for me. And then they have the audacity to get angry when my horse starts to kick? Like keep your animal under control and out of the way of mine and there would have been no issue

Drill yourself, so your training will kick in. My phone even sits in certain pockets out of habit, which I know the camera can see clearly from, videoing in front of me. It’s just like a fire drill. While only two States have statewide leash laws almost all States have laws against “dogs at large” and the majority of areas in the US have local leash laws. It doesn’t matter how well you think you know how to train or watch a dog they should always be leashed, mainly for their protection. As far as children, well yeah most should be leashed, but that isn’t mandated.

I used to have my dog off leash all the time.. fantastically trained and all that. I learned very quickly that even if your dog is well trained. Others may not be and that can cause issues. My dog is now on leash at all times unless we are at home or out in the bush. It’s not worth the risk of your dog being injured, another dog being injured or god forbid a child being injured because they pulled on your dogs ears or something. Generally I'm not afraid of dogs, I don't particularly like dogs but they don't bother me and I'm not scared of them. But I was walking my dad's dog one time for him while he was recovering from a hernia surgery and we came across an open garage with a white dog inside that ran out and stood staring at us like he was gonna charge. I called out to the owner to tell him to come get his pet but the dog was so eager that just the sound of me yelling out was enough to make him run at us and try to fight my dad's dog. I had to kick the white dog in the head real quick and then the owner came running out to grab him.

100% same. I love walking my dog off-leash and she's super well behaved. But I only do it in safe situations where there's no one around, no other dogs, no kids, no cars/traffic, etc. The rest of the time she's on a leash, mostly because I don't trust other people and their dogs. A lot of dog owners are responsible and nice, but there's also a good many that don't bother to train their dog at all or think that their dog being aggressive is just "playing" or "saying hi," and a leash is necessary to get my dog out of those situations fast.

Even if someone needs someone else to correct them, there's never a reason to behave this irrationally. In fact, when you blow things way out of proportion like this, you end up taking steps back. When people look at you, they're not going to see the point you're making--they're only going to think about how loud you're screaming, and they're going to think you're an insane, unhinged lunatic. They're going to view _you_ as the "bad guy" and the _other person_ as the "good guy", no matter what it is they did. So by screaming this loud, all this woman did was make people feel sorry for the guy and his dog. It's true that the guy should leash his dog. *But when you treat someone like garbage, you have no right to criticize them for how their actions might affect others, because you clearly don't understand that yourself.* You're just making the other person look better by comparison and thus drawing attention _away_ from the point you're trying to make.

Dog is an American Staffordshire terrier. Pretty much a cousin to the American pit bull terrier (can be bred for hunting and fighting, sure, but staffys tend to be more show dogs but can still have a prey drive if not trained), if not the same breed depending on pedigree. and backyard breeders. @@moimoiyoop you’re not entirely wrong. Game bred Apbts were indeed bred to fight and hunt small prey like rodents. True pits are too animal aggressive to hunt with packs (bullys are not pit bulls, like Hulk from ddk is not a pit) “Game” is a trait that if you hear, you keep your animal away from that pit. It’s not that they’re bred to bite and never let go (it would depend on the individual specimen), because that would apply to all catch dogs like hunting mastiffs and terriers etc. No, they were bred to fight beyond pain and exhaustion. Depending on the bloodline, depending on the pedigree, a game bred pit bull terrier would never just bite and let go, but thrash whatever is in its jaws psychotically. “Game” is a trait very very specific to only pit bulls, where they’re can fight with there guts hanging and broken bones and they wouldn’t notice until they’re stitched up the next day. And still smile. Some mastiff breeds come close, for example Presa Canarios and Dogo argentinos (both could kill a pit bull I’ll admit but would have life changing injuries), but they’re too coordinated and have less of a chance to be as aggressive as a game bred pit. Not saying they can’t be aggressive, but pits with champ lines are not to be messed with even if they’re smaller dogs. Modern day game pits do have better hunting capabilities, bc old school pits are too animal aggressive to work with packs. But again depends on pedigree and the specimen. The dog in the video is an amstaff. It’s a myth that they were “nanny” dogs, that mostly refers to older generations of staffies and/or bandogs (pits with mastiff mixed).

I’ve owned rescued pits and they do tend to be volatile and less friendly. I’ve owned game pit since birth and will show signs of animal aggression, however that’s how I want them since I live in land and don’t take her to dog parks lol I will say, 9 times out of 10 when I see a pit bull attack a child… it’s not a real pit. It’s either a bandog (mastiff mix) or a bully (generations of pits/staffies mixed with bull dogs) Edit: Pit bulls are my passion. Had quite a few for 30 years. Like I said from rescues to actual champion bloodlines (like my current baby). Roughly 5 I’ve owned my whole only 1 I had to take to back to the shelter. He probably got put down. 2 I owned since birth and they were the best with children, better than my dogo argentino mix. @@billbill6094 Did you read their comment? They said she’s obviously in the wrong. That doesn’t change the fact that dogs should always be leashed in public spaces like this. It isn’t just for other people’s safety, it’s for the dog’s safety too. Dogs aren’t perfect. There is always a possibility that something will be enticing/stimulating enough to make them forget their training. I’ve seen dogs chase a squirrel into traffic before. It’s not pretty and it’s not safe. And if someone else with a reactive dog walks by (on a leash) and your unleashed dog gets too close because it wants to make friends, that can easily turn dangerous. The owners will have a much harder time safely keeping their dogs separated if one of the dogs isn’t harnessed/leashed. Also, people have dog phobias, especially of bigger dogs (like pit bulls), and they deserve to feel safe and not have an unleashed dog they don’t know running up to them, even if it’s friendly. Dogs are animals. They are smart and often obedient, but there’s always a chance that they won’t listen and it will result in harm to them or others. In the US, leashes are required in most public spaces for good reason. They’re laws that were created due to accidents with off leash dogs that caused injury and even death.

@@princessaria did you read mine? The point is you cannot pretend to be concerned with public safety _and_ be a threat to it at once. Full stop. It isn't contradictory to the top comment at all, I'm not reading an essay that fabricates a different thesis here.

@@shaunriordan493a leash also helps protect them from bad dog owners. I don’t take my dogs out because they were attacked by another dog and will always react with aggression, but if I were to give fewer shits and take them in public and an unleashed dog approached us, more than one person/dog is getting hurt. Hence why I keep them home 🤷🏼‍♀️

I actually had to chase a little dog that got loose from its owner a few months ago while at work because she didn't put a leash on it. When it finally tired itself out and I grabbed it, the owner kept apologizing saying that it never did that before. I just told her thats what leashes and collars are for

I run around a field for my workouts some days and one dude walking the field had both his dogs off a leash, so while I was running one of the dogs kept chasing me and tried to bite my leg and eventually a kid was kind enough to go after the dog and get it away from me. Point being, for the sake of other people just put the damn leash on your dog, literally not that much effort and it's your responsibility man.

The problem is not the dog, its what others nay do to it lol Even if the dog is the calmest boy or girl, other people can aggravate it and make them attack them. And to the law, it's always the animal's fault and the owner's.

I mean, it’s disingenuous to ignore the fact pitties make up a majority of fatal dog attacks. Is that due to the breed’s history of dog fighting and the traits which have been selectively bred for that purpose? Shitty owners? Probably both Media coverage of pitbulls is not anti-pitbull imo but there’s a happy medium between acknowledging the breed’s capability to inflict horrendous damage and expecting every pitbull to be a monster

Designed Divide and Conquer by Political and Financial Elites. It makes the population easier to control if they hate each other rather than sticking together...this is how they can freely be as corrupt as they want without anyone ever paying attention because they are so busy with fighting everyone around them. the media is fully involved in this as they are owned by financial elites...that's why they drive dividing topics like, Feminism (Women vs Men), LGBTQ (Straight vs LGQBTQ) and Racism (Race vs Race) so much.... they try to divide the population as much as possible creating hatred inducing propaganda for BOTH sides at the same time. Once you see and understand it everything we witness makes sense

I appreciate your take on dogs being off leash. I have the smallest cutest and friendliest pug puppy but I know to keep his ass on a leash because he could run up to a non-friendly leashed dog and get hurt. Not to mention the concern of him running into the road. Plus some people have big time trauma with dogs and if your do runs up to them that could be a major issue.
