Tony Jeffries shares the pros and cons of hitting the heavy bag or punching bag for boxing. I was surprised that Sugar Ray Leonard, one of the best boxers of all time didn't hit the heavy bag when he was training. One of the cons of hitting the heavy bag is we are developing bad form and techniques in our boxing training.
Do you want one of these bags? If Sanabul will make more bags - You will be the first to know!

I bought a heavy bag a few months ago. Never boxed in my life and as an old guy who has never been in a fight, I don't plan on starting if I can avoid it, but let me tell you, hitting that bag for 20 minutes a day has really helped me get into better shape and it's a heck of a stress reliever. Thanks for these videos, Tony!

I'm probably around 12 years in a row on the heavy bag...and I mean DAILY...do not miss a day; holidays, birthdays, even sub-zero freezing days in my garage. Regardless, I'm hitting that bag. It's the one and only exercise I truly love. Of course, over the years, as I've improved, I've added a water bag at head level, and two double end bags...along with the good ole ground and pound bag for when things hit the floor. LOVE BOXING...and love your videos, Tony!

@@maranathashalom9402 forget about your weightlifting theories and Instagram programs. It's all about endurance, explosivity, dynamics. It's not about growing muscles (although you will develop stronger core, and frame for sure). Weightlifting has become so much of a trend for the past 2 or 3 decades that people forget about the basics of training. Been there, done that. Wish I understood this when I was 20.

I concur. The heavy bag is the number one tool to get in super shape! I am 40 and only started about 5 years ago. Passion came out of nowhere. I am never bored on the bag and hit it about 4 to 5 times a week. I love to spare as well and I did try to join a boxing gym but I must say I no longer have the energy to get going after work. So my workouts are in the morning or during lunch time. Almost every day. Easy and most fun way to get a great workout in 20 to 30 minutes. Do it.

I just shadowbox cause my living quarters are too limited for hanging a heavy bag. I jump rope in my kitchen for a couple hours. I have a bosu ball and a slam ball, ab workouts, pullups, chinups, pushups. It's the best I can do atm. If I ever get a better home, I'll add a bag and a fixed pullup bar.

Hitting the heavy bag strengthens the hands, wrists, elbow and shoulders and associated tissues specific to boxing technique. Many lift weights to increase muscle mass and strength to increase punch power but the lifting technique does not develop muscle nor punch power in the same way as punching a heavy bag. This is the principle of specificity. Better to punch a heavier and heavier bag to increase muscle mass, strength and punch power. The heavy bag is just another type of weight that provides resistance which you overcome by punching it (rather than lifting it). It's the same principle used in weight training only it's more specific to boxing.

One of the things I've learnt from Tony, is using 1 , 2 and 3 Kilogram Dumbbell weights to develop speed, strength and power, particularly the 1 Kg Dumbbells to enhance speed, in specific boxing techniques, particularly in specific Boxing combinations. Like a heavy bag, the Dumbbell weights still develop the specific punching muscles in the upper body, core and legs.

Good basic information. Straight to the point. That is what people need to know. There will always be excuse why not to but, in my opinion, they are the ones who aren’t really serious about training. The ones that are serious will go to a health club, gym or get one for the home and look for drills to keep changing things up! Mindset is everything!

As always in your videos, there is interesting information in this video, Tony. I've used heavy bags for about 17 years as the essence of my Modern Karate (Boxing, Savate, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Karate) Training. Heavy bags are a terrific medium for cardio fitness and developing realistic combinations. However, at my age of 65, my recovery isn't as good as it was decades ago. Even doing heavy bag work sessions three times a week, with a rest day in between, I have quite sore muscles in between workouts. With Covid 19, I've been avoiding my gym where the heavy bag is, for the last three months. What I've learnt from you in another video, Tony, is the use of 1 or 2 or 3 Kilogram Dumbbells in each hand, Shadow Sparring in front of a window (simulated mirror) to enhance speed, working down to Shadow Sparring using no weights. I'm following a lot of advice from a range of your videos, particularly developing and fine tuning many 3 -10 technique combinations. The Dumbbell Shadow Sparring has been a revelation, as I can train 5 - 6 sessions per week, and recover more quickly after each session. I still feel the specific muscles used for Boxing Dumbbell Shadow Sparring have been worked hard, but not as hard as the heavy bag. My pulse rate works at 110-126 beats per minutes for the Dumbbell and no weight Shadow Sparring, compared to the 120-150 beats per minute I attain on the heavy bag. Of course if we ever get past Covid 19, I'll go straight back to the gym to use the heavy bag, but I'm probably going to do a greater proportion of home training sessions with Dumbbell and no weight Shadow Sparring. Brilliant content in this video, as usual, Tony. Thanks a bunch for putting them on KZbin, mate!

I've had a heavy bag for many years at home. If you have the space, get a really big and heavy one like Tony has in the video. I prefer to work out in a gym, but when I can't get to my gym (like during Covid lockdowns) it is an awesome workout. There are many free box timer apps for your phone to do different length rounds (see Tony's other videos for details about that!).

Double end bag and teardrop/uppercut bags are my favourite. Due to injury I prefer using an aqua bag now. To stop getting bored from monotonous repetition you need to be creative and mix up how you train on the bag. For example implement movement, changing levels, tempo, power. Add defence in between shots and combo’s. Not only will it make training more enjoyable, it will consistently improve your skills.

The only downside of a heavy bag is the same as its main upside. It'll let you train whatever you want however much you want. Unfortunately many people get lazy or don't have plan for the workout before they walk up to the bag.

conditioning, people are gonna say wraps but ask Tony wraps don't do much for your wrist. Any exercise for your forearm/grip will help

You don’t have to swing for the fences with every punch. Most of your punches can be in the 20-50% power level, you’re looking to improve movement and technique. You should be using your imagination, treat it like a real fight, when you imagine a good opening you up your power a bit. But yeah, don’t go ham the whole time.

Fist push ups; straight arm plank on fits; dead hang, rope climbing, farmers walk. Any grip strength exercises. Many people assume hand wraps primarily support the wrist, in fact they’re more for knuckle protection. Boxers are prone to “boxers wrist/fracture) due to this. Personally I rarely use wraps, maybe a normal glove under my boxing glove to keep my gloves getting too sweaty.

Probably from bending your wrist in on hooks cos you need to be closer &/or hit more to the front of the bag. Try doing straight punches only for awhile and see if it still happens.

To be honest, working out in general is going to improve your stamina and cardio whether your lifting weights or doing runs or doing sports. When your active and healthy your body develops good habits and your organs function better.

Sir I have one doubt is that 3-4 Feet punch bag which is heavy one is suitable for kick boxing or not ?? Actually we have made double slot punching bag by the help of tailor, means it would be filled with sand inside slot and in outer slot with some raw wooden powder something. I am going to start boxing soon that's why I am asking for your advice

Hmm, I'm no kick boxer but 4-5 foot heavy bag I think would be more ideal for kickboxing. I've never kick boxed but I have friends who use a 5 foot heavy bag to train kickboxing. Hope this helps, though I'm no kick boxing expert.

Hey Tony. thank you for all the great videos. As part of my boxing training, I punch a double end bag suspended from the ceiling and floor. It's light and moves quickly. Is it worthwhile punching this bag? Or am I better off just removing it from my routine?

I remember I'd been using a punch bag in my shed for a year before I went to a gym and after I'd sparred a few times I was doing some light sparring with a coach and he stopped and said 'thats the problem with the heavy bag.' I'd switched off randomly. After that how I used it was completely different. Everyone should do some sparring at a good gym because it transforms how you train from what you think you need to what you actually need.

I got a 2nd bag and gloves about 2 months back, I love it. I move about so hang it on a tree wherever I am moored up. I think it's like a 3/4 heavy bag!? Is there such a thing? Wish it was heavier tbh coz it swings about a bit. Although I know I probably need to learn to control it better. Any advice for a slightly smaller bag. It's about 4 foot high. Ace videos Tony. Cheers fella 👍✌🙏

does it build muscle. it seems like the harder you hit, the more resistence there is, thus its like lifting weights almost.
