It's true that the older board has more surface area during the pop, so the force is distributed over a greater area, meaning a higher pressure on the ground. Still though, the same amount of force is applied with the foot. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction: the upward force (from the ground) is _the same_ and the area doesn't matter. I would think the true reason for the reduction in pop is actually related to the structural integrity of the board. When the board is used (over a month or several) the board will flex and bend through riding, tricks and boardslides. This will cause microfractures in the board, it will loosen the glue between the layers and will basically make the board less rigid. What _really_ happens is that the energy from the upward pop force is lost through the deflection of the board. With a rigid new board, when you ollie _all_ of that upward pop is transferred into movement, into the ollie. But with an older flexible board _more_ of that energy is lost in making the board flex. Think of it this way: suppose you have a rock and a sock full of sand, equal in weight. The rock (totally rigid) will pop off a wall or the ground if you bounce it. The sock-of-sand will simply thud into the surface and won't bounce much because it's more flexible: most of the energy from the impact will be distributed internally through the warping of the object. Edit: Similarly, if you have a beach ball and you smack it with either a frying pan or a chopstick: if you hit it with the _same force_ it will move the same distance at the same speed, even though the chopstick will contact with much less surface area. The pressure (force over area) isn't a factor in these rigid body collisions.
@Pallaxis8 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I thought too, how would a slight amount more of surface area touching the ground reduce the force on the ground?
@torgo_8 жыл бұрын
+Henry Gordon Yup, it all comes down to the degradation of the board material. With a new board you get a nice springy elastic collision with the ground (and more bounce) whereas with an old board much of the pop or rebound collision energy is lost through permanent deflections and cracking/micro fractures in the deck.
@WesleyVantHull8 жыл бұрын

@jegbryrmegikke18 жыл бұрын
+Torgo it doesnt reduce the force, but as aaron said it is because it is spread over a bigger area. but also it might actually just reduce the force, because of the difference in angles? i dont know, but i believe if a brand new board with no cracks or microfractures in the deck, but constructed with a razor tail it would pop less than a regular brand new one
@torgo_8 жыл бұрын
+Jens Petter Lund There is no difference in angles; the foot pops in the same direction regardless of the shape of the tail.

It's important to mention leverage too. There's a principle that the more you expose something to frictional resistance the more the thing will mould to be able to handle that resistance with more control. For example, if I roll a wooden dice a million times, eventually it will stop "popping" of the ground and start rolling - it will become a sphere. In the same way, if I scrape the tail of my board along the ground a million times, eventually it will form a flat surface that "controls" the board better, so it will bounce off the ground less.

Another thing you can try is sanding the nose/tail down where it has worn away, yes in turn it can shorten the board so I advise you not to do it on newish boards. I have done this myself to stop it prone to chipping too.

I had a blind board for about 8 months and it got bad razor tail but I was still able to pop high and do a lot of my tricks high but I got a new board and I can feel the difference from my old one to my new but you just have to try harder on an older board which is a fun challenge.
@Hrethgir8 жыл бұрын
Makes sense to me. Back in the day, (that would be the 80's), I had a Santa Cruz Spidey deck and my buddy had a Santa Cruz something-or-other (forget the name), but it had a tri-tail, where the sides where bent up and it was like a point at the end, and I could ollie that board way higher than mine, never really understood why until now.
@onyxtheomega904610 жыл бұрын
Step 1: sand tail/nose down with 60 grit sandpaper to proper shape. Step 2: skate more. Step 3: save money Yeah, it's gonna make the tail shorter, but it will extend the life of the board by a few months.
@joshtunney667410 жыл бұрын
more like ruin the skateboard and you say it will EXTEND the life of the board? not even close it will do the exact oposite. who the hell can skate a deck with almost an inch shaved off the tail? it just doesnt work bud.
@onyxtheomega904610 жыл бұрын
north seven o five It does work "bud." I said sanding, not shaving. there's a pretty big difference. There are also a ton of board shapes that have shorter tails. Look at some of the Welcome boards for a better visual. I've done it to 3 boards, Anti-hero, Real, and Girl. The Anti-hero lasted about 9 months, the Real board lasted about a year until I intentionally focused it, which resulted in me having bent bolts/trucks because it wouldn't break and the Girl board lasted about 5. I don't know what gives you the idea that it's not possible. it's more than possible.
@MattMcConaha10 жыл бұрын
north seven o five You're not sanding it down unless it has already lost it's life anyway. It's not like you are unwrapping it an immediately shortening the tail.
@PenutButtahnJelli10 жыл бұрын
lol 60 grit? That's coarse af....1200 grit for sure. I used to use that grit to sand concrete...
@onyxtheomega904610 жыл бұрын
Learn Something New Yeah, it is coarse, I recommend doing it by hand and it doesn''t matter how rough the sandpaper is, the board is still going to be smooth, maybe not as smooth as 1200 which is a bit ridiculous to use on wood unless you're getting rid of the graphic and want to smooth it out and 120 should be good enough for smoothing it out anyway. It's wood, not concrete. You're just going to have your board drag around on the ground and hit things when you're riding anyway (because everyone messes up now and then). I feel like you guys don't even skate (meaning you lack actual experience with working on skatevoards) and just want to ridicule someone's idea. I've actually worked on boards for as long as i've been skating, so experience outweighs online ego in this situation. Not saying you have an ego problem, it's just dumb to comment about something you haven't done or know nothing about.
@madmarmot974810 жыл бұрын
Aaron is actually correct in what he is saying. It has to do with two basic principals of physics, impulse and pressure. Pressure being the amount of force per unit area. If the same amount of force is applied to a lesser amount of surface area as a larger amount of surface area, the amount of pressure is going to be greater with the smaller surface area. Pressure is P=F/A. Impulse is the product of a force and the time in which it acts. In this instance if the surface area is larger the pressure will be less because the force is being defused across a greater surface area. This leaves us with less force and thus the board will not accelerate as fast. So a greater amount of force must be input for the same amount of force output.
@monkeynuttzgarage91118 жыл бұрын
Basically more of the force you use to pop the board is lost because the surfaces hitting each other are big. Smaller surface contact means less force is lost so you get more pop.
@SoulAir9 жыл бұрын
Aaron, the area which the force is distributed over does not affect the total force applied. For instance, 2 square inches of .5 lbs per square inch will be an equal force to 1lb per square inch over 1 square inch. Because A=f/m, the acceleration will be equal for both surface areas, and therefore surface area is not a factor in board 'pop'. This being said, it is true boards do tend to lose pop when they are razortailed. I don't know why this is, but I wont pretend to know either.

How does force per inch matter, as long as the total force is the same? I mean, by that logic, you could put some sort of horseshoe under the board and then it would pop much better.
@Alistair8 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same, it's probably because the board is tighter to start with. As you wear down the laquer/paint surface and then the wood board, then the structural integrity starts to go and it will be ever so slightly floppier, less snap. Like an orange would be less bouncy if you tore off some of the skin
@pabz_08 жыл бұрын
actualy it's the pressure applied on the ground that will change .. the pressure will be the force divided by the surface it's applied to .. so for the same total force, you'll have a lot less pressure to the ground if it's divided by the big surface of a used tail then if it's divided by the really small one of a new tail .. sorry if my english isn't perfect, i hope it's understandable ;)
@FALpwn8 жыл бұрын
Schwarzer Ritter it matters because it's like comparing getting hit in the eye with a fist or having someone jam their finger in your eye. the finger causes more injury because it is more force per square inch. the less of the skateboard touching the ground the higher it raises up the more lift you get.

I think if you were to follow this same logic, it would imply that you would jump higher in a pair of high heel shoes as apposed to flat shoes because the PSI increases when loaded up onto a small point on the shoe. This isn’t the case, though, because if it were you would see people setting record-height jumps in a pair of custom shoes that came to a small point at the ball of the foot.

@irishlostboy8 жыл бұрын
uh... no. Diminished spring response (elastic potential energy) would have a far larger effect than surface area impact. The "soggy wood" effect releases the compression energy too slowly to produce pop. the surface area problem described is secondary. if in doubt, grind down a tail on a brand new board, and compare that to a tail worn down naturally from a month or two of solid skating.

@bobomb67969 жыл бұрын
Well the bigger surface is true P=F/A so the force is F=P*A, but it doesnt matter that much, the reason is according to newton actio equals reactio, u will receive a counterforce of the same amount no matter how big the surface is! The reason why the pop is gone is friction inside the material, so a part of the impulse is lost due to friction as heat energy!An old deck has wooden layers which can move towards each other unlike in a new deck, cuz glue is old, cracked or the layersurface is broken a bit and they are not perfectly connected anymore, that is increasing friction and so the loss of energy! Ekin1=Ekin2 + Q and Q is the heatenergy, as u can see, the kinetic energy1 is transformed not full to kinetic energy2, some of it is lost as Q :)

This is simple. The fibers that binds the wood together breaks up, making the board sluggish. Instead of channeling the force from your body downwards to the ground, your board end up absorbing more of the kinetic energy the older and less rigid it gets. A stiff and new board channels all the energy down.

What if you buy a brand new board and never use it? Will it still keep it's pop after, say a year?

If you put some stickers on the tail of the board, will it take a little bit longer to loose it's pop?

Why doesn't anybody answer, can I at least get 1 or 2 likes on this comment.

If you're shredding wood, stickers won't help. At all.

This theory has been around for some time but it's wrong. loss of pop mainly comes from deterioration of wood fibers and glue delam after consistently smacking against the ground. The razor tail itself does a tiny bit but it's negligible.
