running the rack is for engine with mechanical unit injectors, like old Detroit 2 strokes, running the overhead is your valve rocker adjustments and injector rocker adjustments. All in all they are different but are easily called the same.
@carlthor91 Жыл бұрын
Running the rack, refers to the fuel rack on 2 stroke Detroit Diesels, which sets each fuel injector to open equally. Running the overhead, for 4 stroke Diesels, adjusting the valve/injector clearances.
@timstroh216 Жыл бұрын
Hey Nick, you are going to set the over head on that motor, when you do that to a Detroit it's called running the rack!!!!!!! A Detroit is a little different than a Cummins !!!!!!!!
@MF760 Жыл бұрын
Nick when you are hooking up two implements (truck and Batco) you shouldn't use double clevis hitches on both units. This doesn't allow the hitch point to flex over uneven ground.
@pauliossi2674 Жыл бұрын
It's adjusting then valves or overhead, most diesels either have an injection pump to meter the fuel or cam/lifter operated injectors. The old Detroit 2 stroke diesels used the cam to fire the injectors, but they were individually metered with a mechanical rack that had to be adjusted to synchronize the fuel volume to control RPMs and power.

@ronmcmurray1954 Жыл бұрын
it's setting the overhead, running the rack came from the two stroke detroit's. they had a rack to control the injectors. you should adjust the valve bridge's when you set the valves. it will run smoother and is easier on the valves and bridge guides.

The correct term is setting the overhead. Setting the rack is a term used for Detroit 2 stroke engine.
@Look_What_I_Did Жыл бұрын
Rack is the fuel side when the fuel quantity was controlled on the injector with a rack. Hence running the rack so all injectors were uniform. Over head is valves. Today people interchange the terms because they never had to work on the older diesels that had a fuel rack.

Hey Nick. Excellent use of the "Smoke Wrench" to remove those pesky bushings. Thanks for sharing your world with us. Take care and be safe.
@BlueDually4x4 Жыл бұрын
A lot of mechanical fuel injection pumps had a rack that controlled the plungers in the pump to meter fuel, so running the rack wasn't just a 2 stroke thing. An overhead is basically checking everything in the head, valves, fuel injectors that are cam fired and jake brakes. As for the other steering cylinder, I have terrible luck so I would put new seals in both. Cause my luck would have that other cylinder failing at the worst time.

Running the rack is more for the 2 cycle Detroits. You are getting all the injectors synchronized to fuel at the same rate. I usually refer to the rest as setting the valves. This is where you check and adjust the valves that don’t have correct lash. Adjusting the overhead would be adjusting the valves and the rest of the stuff like jakes ect.

Excellent vid as always. I would inspect those rods where they sit mid-stroke while going straight up and down the field. I have replaced the seals, only to have them still seep. The rods get worn ever so slightly and will leak. Even though there isn't much visual wear or damage. And ALWAYS do both at the same time-- if one is only leaking internally it will steer bad and with autosteer it will be constantly trying to over correct.

It's both you are setting the injection rack pressure setting and also running the overhead for the valve settings as Cummins engines has both a rack setting and an overhead valve lash setting. IIRC the injectors are set at 100 In lbs of torque at zero lash on the injector pushrods. The exhaust is 25 thou and the intake is 19 thou.

Good stuff. Doing an overhead or running the rack essentially means the same thing to old school drivers like myself. My memory is more of running the rack on Detroit engines and doing an overhead on Cummins and Cat motors. But either one meant adjust the valve lash on the heads when talking to a service department. That and begging them to ''turn it up'' while they were in there adjusting things.😬Can never have enough power for a driver.!!
