I go through the process of building my 2nd wooden ITX PC Case. There are several learnings/ impovements I have implemented from my previous wooden case. The overall design goal was similar to my previous case, clean case with minimal exposed screws, glass side panels to show off the components and cable management, all while not compromising too much with cooling performance.
1. Using mitred cuts to join the main frame together to have a seamless joint (no end grain showing)
2. Using 2 magnets to attach the glass panel onto the case. A thinner piece glued onto the glass means they are more robust (less likely to break off)
3. The height restriction of the CPU cooler in the previous case was a limitation to the CPU temperature. In this case, I implemented a design that could accomodate a thick 280mm AIO for more CPU cooling potential
The overall design goal was similar to my previous case, clean case with minimal exposed screws, glass side panels to show off the components and cable management, all while not compromising too much on cooling performance.
Parts:
i5 10400F
EVGA GTX 1080ti FTW3
Asus Strix B460i
Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB SL 32 GB (16x2)
Arctic Liquid Freezer ii 280 ARGB
Silverstone SX650G

Looks great! The one thing I'd change: The front "grill" with the honeycomb design would do well with a dust filter backing and magnets holding it in place, so you can easily detach it, clean it and put it back on. Other than that, this is a pretty awesome case.

Was going to say the same thing, but also to make it flush, rather than sinking the radiator flush. This could maybe still be done if there is room behind the rad, by printing some different brackets.

An outfit canned nMEDIAPC used to sell one, they look like old radios. My two desktops are built in those cases. They are cool cases and I like them a lot, but they are nothing like this. The nMEDIAPC case is made out of some pressboard stuff, while the one MXC is building are works of art.

Have a play with some brass inlay wire! You just cut a little groove and press it in then sand it flush - everyone knows brass goes perfectly with walnut (or fake walnut because us poor Aussies can't get it without paying an arm and a leg). You can also get brass corner protectors, brass wires mesh (for fan grills) and little brass feet. I myself have "owl feet". The stitched leather handles from guitar amps make great classy handles, too :)

Great suggestions again, will definitely be looking into adding brass inlays for my next build. Do you know a good place to get them here in au?
@PinataOblongata
@PinataOblongata Жыл бұрын
@@mxcbuilds6633 There are some woodworking and jewellery places, but they are expensive, and you're probably better off just using the various online marketplaces. Closest thing in Bunnings is picture hanging wire, but no idea how that would work out. You could also try some phosphor-bronze guitar strings, or bronze fret-wire for guitar frets, but what you really want is the proper square stuff. You can use a tiny chisel or a dremel to get the little groove cut, but the easiest way would be to get the design laser cut and then press/tap the inlay wire into it. A more simple starter would be just one, straight piece of of brass flat-bar, perhaps inlaid into the front panel (or all the way around) and offset from centre. That would work well with your minimalist aesthetic, I think. Oh yeah, you can also get brass momentary switches for the power button ;)

design is great, I only have criticism on the hardware install. #1 don't tighten the screws for cpu radiator or heatsink that tight, its actually supposed to be "hand tight". overtightening can cause the arms to bend and not contact the cpu lid properly. #2 don't braid the hoses from the aio together, one of the hoses brings back hot water and one brings in cooler water and if they are touching the water will get warmer again before it gets to the cpu.

Plywood sounds like the obvious choice for building a PC case, but only until you learn it does bend a lot as the time passes. It's also rather noisy material. To work with one you could use router for cleaner edges and cuts. Also you can attach an extra board on top of the one you are actually working with. You will still have surface defects, but on the piece you don't care about. Hardwood, MDF are easier picks, but thicker. Some "sandwiched" materials could work.

Thank you for your suggestion! I have tried using a laser cutter for plywood and that works very well at getting clean edges.

I have a tip for ur "templates": If u do the prints with a laser printer, u can transfer the print to the wood with a regular (clothing) iron. That's way easier than "copying" everything with the knife.
@mxcbuilds6633
@mxcbuilds6633 Жыл бұрын
That's something interesting I should try next time! But using a knife to score the plywood is recommended anyways to reduce the tear-out when cutting
