World of Warships Blitz - German carrier "Manfred von Richthofen" review

I may have finally found a CV line I actually enjoy, but is it worth the grind of over 600k XP for tier 10? Let's find out.

I so far have a lot of experience with the German carriers. For a year I’ve had the Black GZ and now have the teir 6 cv. To help you out, to begin with I suggest you send the fighters alone to spot. As you’ve stated there are many AA ships that will shred your planes so the fighters are what you’d want to risk most. From there, see if there is any “Lone Wolves” this is the term I use for ships who are a distance from other ships. If they aren’t a strong AA ship like a Japanese BB they are what you want to strike first. It helps because these guys are likely attempting to flank and or are just stupid. The next suggestion is take advantage of the map and hide against something. I do suggest you ensure your CV has some damage controls that reduce chances of fire and flooding because what I live about the German CV’s is their secondaries if used right are very aggressive. So if you are getting close and personal with a ship you want to at the same time use bombers and toro bombers to help cripple them. With enemy planes be wise with what’s going on. Fighters will attack yours once they are within a range and your fighters won’t attack them if they are still flying to the designated location. So what you do is when they start coming to your planes you send your fighters down to the AA or any other ships to help shred them. And if your in danger either ensure your friend is using an AA ship to protect you or get near other ships to support yours. The reason I love the German cv’s most is because of the citadels because as someone who has used Midway or any other carrier they are reliant on fires and flooding to make their damage and the damage controls can stop that instantly. With citadels your dealing instantaneous damage that cannot be recovered and this is extremely useful when in dangerous situations you need to put down a ship. Their torpedo bombers are also very good if you use them to assist the team when they are fighting other ships as you can sent them in a position where they either turn broadside to your team and or you mail their ass with torps and you cause flooding. This could be and the most risky thing is you send them at a long distance away at a wall of ships you absolutely must disperse or cripple. If your careful on what you do this can try to weaken the AA wall once they split up or damage the ships and basically soften them up for your team. If your overall careful and play your cards right you can be very viscous. And this tree is amazing in respawn too as you can be as aggressive as you wish coming the risk of giving the team points but once you get the Kraken which I have a number of times the CV gets super super scary for the enemy as now the secondaries start mauling them down.

I find the torp spread quite odd since all 7 torps get dropped at the same time despite the 2 planes being the the back. I really though that the thing is gonna have a 5 plane dispersion and extra 2 torps at the back

Yeah, that's an interesting point - they probably don't have that modelled, and just ended up increasing the squad size

The German carriers on PC are really effective because they do have AP bombs but also have AP rockets. If the Manfred had this, this would’ve been very effective on crusiers as well

Im not a good carrier player, but did you know that you can lock your fighters on your own team by tapping their ship while you have the fighter icon selected? That includes your own ship. I just found this out a couple months ago (not a cv main)

@@Testerossa I've been playing for 4 years, but I don't play carriers often, in fact 15% or less of the 6400 battles I've played are in carriers. Also this wasn't shown in the in game tutorial for carriers when I first attempted to play carriers. I used to just send the fighters to strategic areas of the map and forget about them, basically using them as an early warning system

Great video as always Terry and it is nice to see on how good you have gotten well playing with the German cv's. I must agree with you that with the secondaries and the plane squadrons are very one side in use, but I must say MVR in grand battles supported by any other cv will be an absolute monster. That’s interesting. I thought it was similar to the T8 but apparently it’s very different. Base on the current result, I am probably going to stop at tier 8. Just curious, do you think it’s going to make a huge difference if all 12 auto secondaries are on the deck so you can use at least 6 of them at any direction?

Not really a huge difference, no. I think the concept was that German CVs support an aggressive playstyle - why else would you give them the ship skills, and terrible concealment, but the problem is T10. Most battleships here can end a CV _very_ quickly. I think it would be a good improvement if the secondaries would have arcs towards the rear - maybe trade the four AA guns on the stern. That would at least give them a little deterrence against DDs. But overall, this works in T8, because, well, it's tier 8 - not so much in T10.

I think MVR got the fighters in t10 with 78% fighter efficiency with fighter mod on first slot and commander skill, porlly who's more experienced in controlling multiple planes at single times had made the most out of it! I enjoy it alot with

Yeah, pretty much agree with your summary. The first time I was targeted by a 7 plane torpedo squadron I thought, "Ooooo, do I want to learn how to play carriers, now??" But no. This thing is only effective against BBs and CVs, which is what we least need from them (and I really dislike when that's all CV captains do). Interesting idea, this thing, but I think it's a bust. 🤷‍♂️

I don't know, I've seen people do great amounts of damage in these things, but it's extremely dependent on the matchmaking I think, and on luck. Compare the citadel chance - 5%? Maybe? - to the 60+% fire chance on USN dive bombers. They're much less dependent on RNG than this one.

@@FunandGameswithTerry Exactly! The only way to make this ship work is to take down the enemy carrier before it takes you down, and even this strategy is heavily dependent on matchmaking. As this strategy is gradually familiar to other players, it becomes even more difficult for her to perform it. ( Just as the speed of the French destroys no longer gives people surprise 😂) By the way, me myself isn’t a good cv player either. After playing the other three T10 carriers. I would say Midway is the one that doesn’t require any “finger gimmicks” and it has the stablest fire and flooding chances, so maybe you could give it a try.

I like the German carriers,even though the rehine is not really that good,but i do like her and do well,well, 88's.i know going for the carrier snipe is for most of the time is not worth the time and effort,but sometimes u have a carrier player that just runs the game and cuts u and your team in half,and there are some great carrier players so I feel this is a counter balance to that and other ships that if used by great players.its just my opinion if ur a ok carrier play this gives u a shot at winning.But as always Terry great vid and info as always.Thanks my friend. It's a tricky question, I'm still on the fence about the whole CV snipe thing myself. At the one hand, you have a very good point, it can be a balancing factor against more skilled CV players, but on the other hand, it ends up turning the competition between two CVs into a coin toss, rather than a matter of skills, since you have no influence over matchmaking wrt AA ships, or the citadel chance. For me, who mostly doesn't play CV, it's not a huge issue, but for CV mains I can imagine this to be more of a hot topic.

With the extra torpedo bombers... Are these maybe a timely counter to the Italian BBs...?? Especially with their weak AA. Guess Id rather try to suffer German CVs than an Italian nerf....(??)

Not sure, Italian BBs tend to have pretty good torpedo protection, and while you can score citadels on deck penetration, it's not that huge an amount of damage. I wouldn't say they're necessarily that much stronger against RM BBs than other CVs.

See, that's the point where I'm conflicted. Yes, it's a valid play, but it's also entirely luck based. Do I get citadels? Does the enemy team have any AA? Plus, I'm neglecting other tasks, like keeping DDs spotted. For the carrier on the receiving end, there's no counterplay. Even maxed AA builds with defAA up can't defend against this, as you've seen. I like outplaying my opponent, I value a good fight over a win, and it feels like a toxic move to make under those circumstances. The game mechanics encouraging that just doesn't seem right. I don't want to turn this into a gamble, where I hit the enemy CV for 3m, and it's a coin toss if it's successful or not. There's no fun in that for me.

@@FunandGameswithTerry agree it lacks of support to everyone but at the same time if it works that way there's no other way to go for dmg maybe once the sniping is successful you can now give full focus on supporting your team but still depends on the matchmaking

Yeah, I've had that done to me a couple of times during testing. It's frustrating, from the receiving end, to say the least - but it's definitely a viable tactic, especially if you get lucky with the citadels.

I think is quite irritating they gave German carriers outdated planes throughout the whole line while for the Brutish they gave them post-war planes also not even mentioning the horrible fighters they get when a lot of the German fighters irl were pretty good specially the ones armed with the MG 150/20 that was a murderous gun against enemy aircraft and the reason why the Luftwaffe was relatively successful during the war.

I sniggered at "Brutish", even though that may have been a typo :) Tbh, the depiction isn't always accurate, it's for gameplay purposes. The British battleships in-game have comparatively weak armour, only Italians get semi-AP, ... In the end, they chose a "niche" for a line to play, which distinguishes it from the others. For German lines, that's often the "brawler" concept. And I love that in T8, but it just doesn't work in T10, due to meta, battleship gun calibres etc.

Ach wie schade ich dachte die 12 Kanonen wären besser verteilt . Das ist natürlich mies und kommt niemals an die feuerkraft einer Graf Zeppelin ran . Vielleicht hat WG ja nach ein paar Wochen gemerkt das dieser CV nicht gut ausbalanciert ist . Vielleicht ist es taktisch auch erstmal besser mit den 2 Jägern die feindlichen Flieger vom Himmel zu holen . Ich kriege zb immer eine Attacke wenn der gegnerische CV die Saipan ist wenn ich die Graf Z. Spiele . Na vielleicht wird ja nochmal was gedreht am T10 CV.

Durch die Position der Geschütze ist die Feuerkraft sogar geringer als in T8. Damit ist der Skill auch weitestgehend nutzlos. Ich habe WG meine Sicht der Dinge dargelegt, allerdings bin ich nicht sicher, ob sich da was ändern wird, da dafür dass Modell angepasst werden müsste. Wir werden sehen.

Thats pretty harsh...well, really, just rude. Terry covers all sorts of aspects of the ships, including history (if existent), comparitive specs, strengths and weaknesses, strategy, etc... He is probably the most organized, informative, consistent, and prolific WOWS contributor, and thousands of people have learned a lot from him...
