Shawn Michaels saying that he lost his smile is one of those things that just won’t go away.
Shawn Michaels was the WWF’s most popular superstar during 1996. HBK had defeated Bret Hart at WrestleMania XII to become the WWF Champion and the company soon began revolving around Shawn Michaels. At the same time, over on WCW, the nWo had formed which led to many wrestling fans choosing World Championship Wrestling over the World Wrestling Federation. Shawn was the champion of a company that was quickly becoming the runner up, and HBK put a tremendous amount of pressure on himself during this time period.
Shawn dropped the WWF title to Sycho Sid at the 1996 Survivor Series. The plan was for Shawn to win the title back in his hometown of San Antonio, TX at the 1997 Royal Rumble. At the pay per view, Shawn wasn’t 100%. The WWF claimed that HBK was sick but Shawn still worked the match and he still reclaimed the WWF Championship. Weeks later, Shawn decided to forfeit the title while claiming that he had “lost his smile”. Shawn Michaels losing his smile is something that has stuck with the Heartbreak Kid ever since February of 1997, and this is what we will look at in today’s video.
00:00 - Shawn’s 1996 Title Run comes to an end
03:01 - The 1997 Royal Rumble
06:15 - Raw in the Skydome
09:06 - Shawn losing his smile on Raw
13:40 - Superstars react to Shawn forfeiting the title
16:53 - Bret Hart’s WrestleMania 13 plans
18:45 - The aftermath of Shawn’s forfeit

Shawn essentially avoided doing the job to Bret, slipped back in to work with hottest wrestler in the company in Steve Austin, got inserted in a big title match with Bret and Undertaker, got to work an historic HIAC match with Taker, helped unceremoniously jettison the Hitman and got to work the big feud with Austin in the end all the while sticking it to the Harts on television and back stage. I don't see how he made it out of 1997 with his teeth still intact.

Brett then whispered to Davey Boy Smith about Brutus the barber beefcake and that’s why the big boss man mentioned it to Howard Finkel who in turn told Rick Rude and Mr Perfect 👌🏻

Actually Stone Cold can thank two unusual circumstances that led to an expedited rise up the ranks: Triple H being punished in '96 for the MSG Curtain Call where Austin because King of Ring instead. And Shawn Michaels dropping the WWF title and "losing his smile" & cancelling out the Shawn-Bret 'Mania rematch which led to the iconic Austin-Bret match that made Stone Cold a face and truly began his rocket launch to the top.

Let's rewind this a few years: According to Shawn's biography "Heartbreak and Triumph", the day before a tag match, while he was still with Marty Jannetty in 'The Rockers', Shawn tore up his right knee in a motorcycle incident. He ran out to the ring with Marty the following day but was attacked before the match began and had his knee hit with a pipe, causing the match to be a No Contest. That allowed Shawn to get his knee checked out. There were two options, full repair and reconstruction or scope it. Scoping was the least time lost (I think 6 months vs 6 weeks), so he had it scoped and cleaned out. Flash ahead to '96-'97, Shawn's desire/selfishness/whatever about putting the WWE on his back during the takeoff of the Monday Night Wars is wearing him out. He is going through everything that has been revealed with drugs, booze, and his own personal life falling apart. After a triple threat match with Bret and Sid, likely NOT the RAW in Toronto, Shawn felt his knee jam again and went to the doctor. His family doctor looked at the MRI and said 'You have no ACL'. Shawn replied, 'I know, I had it scoped'. Which is when he was told he would never wrestle again. During the process of trying to come to terms with likely retirement and Vince telling him to check out another doctor (Dr. James Andrews), he was talking to his mom who told him that along the title run that Shawn had stopped smiling. Flash then to Thursday RAW Thursday, and everything comes to the front. I think, in retrospect, it was Shawn almost having a meltdown in the middle of the ring and finally saying 'uncle'. After the promo and leaving, Vince finally convinced him to see Dr. James Andrews. Dr. Andrews told Shawn there were alternative avenues to his knee troubles and he could very well get him back wrestling. Shawn, not wanting to leave the business, took the chance and recovered to wrestle again before being forced to retire in '98. If I recall reading it correctly, he actually rehabbed his knee alongside Steve Austin while Austin was still working his own stuff.

Trash Millenial Outing! 🗑️ 💩 He lost (correction: had to lose!) enough matches early 90s for the rest of his life despite being way better than most of his opponents. Everything has roots. Nobody talking about the obvious nepotism in wrestling with the Hart Clan on the forefront! Bret was not better early 90s then Shawn, but def not by 1995. Bret was build the Hogan successor after Warrior was not reliable, well he had his chance and didn't bring it and WWF got in more and more financial trouble mid 90s! No one talking real truth! Everyone got their cliques from kindergarten to retirement. But when Shawn is looking after years for a friend support team to better his standings, I only hear for 25 yrs by now how huuuge crocodile tears how unfair 3 ppl of a 50 man roster, then 4 ppl, then 5. Gimme a break! Shawn is 99% better than Bret as a Sports Entertainer overall. If Bret cannot retire on his peak 1994/1995 and needed the downwirl drag, well he screwed his History. Shawn never took him that seriously but hell yeah it was his prime and not keep on wrestling in his 50s like other Narcissists! Only ugly men hate on pretty men! It always boils down to that with a thousand excuses. Still whatever he gets the girls and career merits and not the ugly hater!

God such a great video I needed this with everything going on. Great memories, I was so torn between Shawn and Bret between 92 all the way to 97. I couldn't boo neither. Truly the two greatest in ring performers. I def couldn't find my smile during this feud.

I remember this episode with the Infamous I lost my smile. Like looking back I never knew why he forfeited the title, I just thought of it as him taking time off. I ain’t know he didn’t wanna drop it to Bret til years laters. I remember back then Bret and Shawn had intense for hatred for each other. Cause Bret Hart was more of old school type of wrestler while Shawn Michaels was more into being a showman full wit glitz and glamour. At this time Shawn and The Kliq had so much pull wit Vince that he let them do whatever they wanted and they halted a lot guy’s pushed in then WWF. Bret and Shawn would go it in the 90s. After Shawn forfeited Sid won the vacated title then he lost it to Undertaker at Mania who lost it to Bret at SummerSlam of that year. After Shawn got the belt back at Survivor Series the infamous Montreal Screwjob. Which ended their rivalry and Bret goin to WCW. Bret and Shawn would never speak to each other til 13 years later and they put it all behind them

Good video as always. Sounds like to me, Shawn had too much personal stuff/demons going on in back in ‘96, to carry the company long term. By the way it would be great if you could do a video on Booker T’s WCW run. Hell of a performer.
