In this video I show you how easy it is to replace the rear outer CV boot on your UTV. I also share with you a handy tip on getting your CV joint easily back onto the axle shaft.

The zip tie around the C clip is a great idea. One more thing I learned today.

Man I had an axle the other day where the outer CV would NOT come off. I tapped, I hammered, I beat. I have done this many times and never had that issue. I finally got mad and decided it was GOING TO come off, so I got a real big hammer. I ended up breaking the ball cage, but the end of the CV STILL did not come off. New axle came in today so I am just replacing the whole thing. Great video!

Great video, very helpful, thanks mate. Using a cable tie on the C clip made it much easier.

Great video. The tie wrap tip is great. Thanks very much.

There's a clip on the axle spline that goes into the rear end, this is what is holding your axle in place. As in the video (1:46) , I was able to give it a few good quick jerking pulls which was enough to tap it out. I've recently did the same job (CV boot replacements) on a Honda CRV and I had to take a pry bar and place it between the axle cv joint and rear end to pull them off. Hope that helps.

Great video, watched it when replacing cv boot on the Yamaha Viking, exactly the same as the Rhino. Many thanks, saved me $$$$

Great video, thanks. I would like to mention that you need to switch your rear tires around, the tread is going the wrong way.

My nephew has a Rhino 700 Limited Edition and he has an inner torn boot. Procedure looks like it would be the same. Thanks for the tips.

great video, I am trying to replace my outer CV joint but can get it off the axel do you have any suggestions?
@samwilson72309 жыл бұрын
Thanks dude, just got a bad clicking sound in my left rear after tearing it up at Windrock ATV park in Tennessee. Bought a new one on line and can't wait to fix it. Curious, do you have to grease brand new axles under the boots?
@contantproduction9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sam! If you are replacing the boot only, it will come with a bag of CV joint grease to grease the joint and fill the boot. If you purchased a replacement axle it will come greased up and ready to install. Hope that answers your question and good luck with the repairs!

I was wondering if I could replace the outer cv boot without taking the axle off but I can see that’s probably a no.
@contantproduction10 жыл бұрын
Based on the diagrams I can see, it will be very close to the same. I have changed boots on many ATV (Honda, Yamaha) and the concept has been the same for all.

Hello, I am having to work on my front left suspension and I have a question. At approx. 1:04 you unscrew the axle nut and later put it back on. When I attempt to do this the whole axle spins. I am having to clamp it with a big pipe wrench. Am I doing something wrong? Should I put the Rhino in 4 wheel drive to keep it from spinning? Thanks for your thorough video and any help that someone might provide.
@contantproduction10 жыл бұрын
Chad, are you using an impact gun? These nuts are torqued at 255 ft lbs so if you are doing it with a ratchet or long bar it will be tough. Especially considering the fact that these nuts are punched in the slot. Maybe by putting the wheels back on and the rhino on the ground while someone holds the brake down may work to stop it from turning. Use a long bar on your ratchet to give you the best leverage as these nuts are tight! If all fails your best bet remains the impact gun. Let us know how you make out. Thanks.

contantproduction Thank you for the response, I really appreciate it as I am a rank amateur and have never before had to work on my Rhino till I hit a low stump last week. I did get the nut off using a pipe wrench to hold the axle in place. It just bothered me that mine spun while yours did not. I thought maybe that something worse was torn up. I am waiting on a new Lower A-Arm to come in and when it does I will begin to put things back together. I will try the brake idea that you suggested to hold the axle in place while I tighten the nut back. Thanks again.

The right term is a circlip and the part number is 5UG-F512H-00-00. Check any OEM part web site, such as this one www.mrmotorcycleparts.com/partslist-YXR70FSP2X-REAR-WHEEL-u3.html and you will see it as 12 or m. This is the clip that I clamped down with a tie wrap to slide the outer joint on the shaft. At the other end, the differential end, you have a snap ring, not sure if this is the clip you are talking about. This ring needs to be installed and removed with snap ring pliers. To disassemble or reassemble this end is usually easier and the larger clip (d) is removed using a pick took. Then the shaft and joint slides out, exposing the end of the shaft and the snap ring that holds the joint onto the shaft. Hope this clears up the clip I’m talking about.

need to pull the axel out of my 05 rhino, onece the axel is out of the hub, how do i actually disconect the axel from tye difff and pull it out?
@contantproduction8 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Kloss You need to pull it out by yanking on it. Check this other video I made where I had to pry it out because it wouldn't come out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqbNequviKuJbKc

The rear outer CV joint on the 2005 Rhino 660 is not removable from the shaft. To change the rear outer CV boot, the inner CV joint must be removed. Then the outer CV joint boot can be slid up the shaft to the outer CV joint to replace it. Then the inner CV joint and boot is put back together and the shaft can then be re-installed.

At 4:18 you out a zip tie in. But I can not for the life of me get it in the groves. I have snap clip. There's no way it will go in. What do you mean by c clip

You made that look too easy.I just finished doing the outer right on my 660 grizzly and I could not get the axle shaft out of the joint. I ended up just cleaning it and re greasing cuz were going riding in the am. By the way The torque spec on the big center nut is 190 lbs/ft on my grizzly.(probably similar on your machine.)

++As a HD/Yamaha certified Tech, Do not disassemble the axle the way he did it, you will damage so many things that you'll end up buying the whole axle assembly. Just take it to a trusted authorized dealership. End of story++
