Yamaha Sessions | Tom Hunting & Jack Gibson of EXODUS

At the beginning of their career, EXODUS gained huge notoriety in the international underground scene as a result of the tape trading community. Their dynamic guitar and bass riffing, adrenaline-inducing drum work, and bloodied live shows made all the difference in the band’s mission to take Bay Area Thrash to a worldwide audience. EXODUS’ debut, the immortal, must-have, undisputed thrash classic Bonded By Blood was released in 1985 and a vast tour with Slayer and Venom propelled the band into a household name.
In 2015 Exodus is standing stronger than ever and thrashing metal fans around the world, currently touring the globe in support of their latest release "Blood In Blood Out".
Exodus´ drummer Tom Hunting & bassist Jack Gibson stopped by our studio during the band´s tour in Europe for a spontanious jam with Jack playing his custom finished Yamaha BB Bass and Tom performing his characteristic double bass set-up with a Yamaha Live Custom in "Emerald Shadow Sunburst" finish.

Tom Hunting is a FUCKING MONSTER on the kit. So underrated...in terms of thrash drummers, he deserves to be mentioned right up there with the likes of Lombardo and Benante. And Gibson is no slouch either. I love how Andy Sneap captures his bass attack...he manages to find a perfect frequency pocket for Gibson's bass to sit in among the guitars on Exodus' recent albums. It allows you to clearly hear every note he plays, while not taking away from the rest of the music. It's very similar to DD Verni's bass lines in Overkill....lots of clarity, but it doesn't overwhelm the sound.

Lars is 100 times more unique whether you like him or not. Tom is just a compact, basic trash drummer. Does kinda the bare minimum, & all the generic tricks. Some cool signature fills etc. here & there, but hardly an innovator. And all the comments comparing these basic trash drummers to guys like Hoglan etc. are obviously casuals, non-drummers. Like comparing an apple to a whole tree of them.

The best thrash metal drummers for me are, 1, Dave Lombardo. 2, Charlie Benantte. 3,Tom hunting. 4, Paul Bostaph. But there's Nick menza ( in my opinion the best drummer for Megadeath) Gene hoglan is a brilliant drummer, but for me he's more of a death metal drummer, and the best death metal drummer is by far Steve ashiem of deicide.
