@@Tullipan248 Ikr. There are a few key things that are vastly different than the past. Probably the most important is that we now have birth control measures that are highly effective. This allows us to still have sex, but choose whether to reproduce. Before effective birth control the average family size was much larger. Another major factor is the narrative now is essentially that humans are destroying the planet and that we are nearing the brink of overpopulation. If you believe that how could you justify bringing additional people into the situation? Furthermore, it's far more common for both men and women in a marriage to be working full time - and not always on the same schedule. This translates into fewer encounters that produce children. In fact we find that the more educated and financially successful couples are, the less likely they are to have large families, or any children at all. I was surprised that there seemed to be confusion about why fewer people were reproducing now compared to the past.

It’s acutely cringe, bc only people with fragile egos, insecure about their intellect (consciously or not), who immediately dismiss matters about which they know nothing. “Condemnation without investigation is lowest form of ignorance.” I had been one such dipshit before an NDE. Extraordinarily educated, but severely limited by the parameters for reality my silly little human mind (ego) superimposed onto objective reality. Because, _subconsciously,_ I knew peeling back layers of the onion meant facing how little I actually knew, and how mistaken I was about what I was so sure was true or false/impossible-same for most people. Being a psychotherapist with a background in cognitive psych mercifully allowed me a leg up on whether my newfound insights & elevated/expanded perceptions were manifestations of mental illness, bc I might’ve thought I’d had some sort of psychotic break (extraordinarily rare to emerge spontaneously at my age). Humility truly is the foundation of wisdom, and discernment is earned via nursing bruises from falls off high horses (Destiny’s tumble will be epic, but he’ll be genuinely powerful afterward-provided he stops doubling down on ego).

There are several factors that contribute to the low birth rate in Japan: 1. High cost of living: Japan has a high cost of living, particularly in urban areas, which makes it difficult for young couples to afford to have children. This includes the cost of housing, education, and healthcare. 2. Changing social attitudes: Japanese society has undergone significant changes over the past few decades, with an increasing number of women pursuing higher education and careers. This has led to a shift away from traditional gender roles and a delay in marriage and childbirth. 3. Lack of work-life balance: Japanese workers are known for their long hours and intense work culture, which leaves little time for family life. Many young couples feel that they would not be able to balance their work and family responsibilities, leading them to postpone or forgo having children. 4. Limited childcare options: Despite efforts to increase access to childcare, there is still a shortage of affordable and high-quality childcare options in Japan. This makes it difficult for working parents to balance their work and family responsibilities. 5. Aging population: Japan has a rapidly aging population, which means that there are fewer young people of childbearing age. This further exacerbates the low birth rate problem. Overall, these factors have created a challenging environment for young couples who wish to have children, and the Japanese government has implemented various policies to try and address these issues and encourage more births.

To answer the man's question: If I can clone myself when I die and that clone continues on with all of my memories, thoughts, and feelings, I am still dead and the clone is meaningless to me. If my being / consciousness were to continue on after this life but I lose my identity as me now, its the same as death and future me is meaningless. So why do humans not behave like they may have a future self after death? Because a future self without the identity of the immediate self is meaningless. Thats my view anyways. On a side note, this caller is fantastic! Please have people like him on more and people like Farhaha on less.

Reminds me of the ending of Soma. You're led to believe that you'll be joining a paradise but instead you are simply uploading yourself at that current moment. Your partner wanted to upload herself understanding this outcome on her end because she wanted to know theres a version of her happy there. The main character not having expected or picking up on this despite being a product of similiar past actions, gets mad at her for not being the one in paradise. Both are selfish but theres a clear difference in their selfishness.

I think the caller's point is that the future itself is radically contingent, in that we can only _assume_ that over an infinite time the same thermodynamic laws that affect us now will persist for the rest of eternity. But this is actually a pretty old Problem of Induction that dates back to Hume. How do we _know_ that these causal laws will remain the same? Obviously science as such can only operate under the Principle of Uniformitarianism, but this has to be taken _axiomatically,_ we can never know _for certain_ that this Principle is _guaranteed_ to persist.

@@justifano7046 Science as a discipline fundamentally depends on the assumption of a Universal Natural Law that we use empirical instruments to gain an understanding of. I might be misunderstanding something, but my answer to the question about maximizing experiences of my future lives would be this: I think it's more reasonable to maximize the experience of the current identity, rather than the "creature" that transfers from body to body. Because my identity doesn't have any attachments with potential future or past experiences in form of memories. Basically it's just changing what "me" means, it's not the "creature" that travels from identity to identity, it's actually THE identity that I have right now that is "me". Therefore, for myself only, there's no reason to maximize the experience of future identities, because after the experience of the current identity will end, I will have no attachments with the future identities in forms of memories. I think this "creature" is just an unnecessary variable added to the hypothesis, if we remove this creature, nothing will meaningfully change. If I'm missing out on something I'd be glad if someone could point that out :)

The thing about having kids and not having kids is that when you dont have kids you have an abundance of freedom and independance. You can literally do what you want when you want and this is extremely appealing in the modern age. That being said when you have kids it add so much to your life that is indescribible until youve experienced it. I just had ny firstborn last month and i would never go back to a childless life even at the cost of my sleep and fianances. You feel like you rrally know what it means to be human. Also i highly doubt you have visited many people in death beds, a common solution for you would be to talk with a local hospital nurse or any worker there how many people die unsatisfied death just because of their past actions and how they regret everything in life until the last moment and how heartbreaking it is to see that. This made me think, I wonder if consciousness and experience are one or seperate. If we can determine if our conscience is physical and not spiritual and is based on the way your brain works. And we find out what parts of our brain remember/holds our experience and consciousness. And it would be possible to transfer 50% of all of our experience and all of our consciousness of that brain to a different/fresh brain. Would we live on as we remember but with 50% of experience? Would you be able to live endlessly by backing up 50% of your experience and the part of your consciousness to the next brain? If somehow you can transfer 50% of the brain with consciousness and x% of your experience to a different brain, connect the 2 brain halfs together, move the consciousness over to the fresh 50% brain to keep remembering who you are, Would that mean you wont die? You would just forget the 50% of memories you have build up, but able to build new memories based on the 50% you take with you each time. How i would determine that someone died, is if they lose the consciousness of who they are, its weird to say, but in my mind if you would forget who you are each 15 minutes, i would think you just die each 15 minutes and reboot in the same body until the body cant support the reboot anymore, like a harddisk in a computer.

Perhaps this gets addressed (at 30 minutes thus far) but the simple reason not to live to maximize future experiences is simply that what lies beyond death is an unknowable, at least in our minds, which means the potential futures to prepare for would be infinite. You'd have no way of knowing what "maximizing" would be, because the potential futures to maximize would be infinite and often contradictory.

The problem with that guy's approach to population growth sounded good at first. Having kids super young and have that not be a life-ending event for young people due to the destruction of the nuclear family sounds great, I'm all about destroying the idea of the nuclear family and go back to more communal ways of child-rearing. However that would probably make it so people become nannies for the rest of their lives, and I don't know if a lot of people want to do that.

He have this weird idea about a random family member who have a fucked up life, only work part time then go home doing fuck all and take care of his child. Bro,if there is a guy in your family like that,he is the last person you want to take care of your kid, because he probably dont give a flying fuck if that kid dies or do anything stupid. His life is miserable already, have a shit job,no family for himself and he is also a free nanny for him so he can go travel and shit? Yeah fuck right off with that.

That's the issue. Idk where he grew up . Entirely in the west or partly in India. But as an Indian I could see a point and why he thinks about the community/extended family taking care of your kid. That still happens here in many households where uncles, aunts, grandparents etc are always ready to look after the kid as their own. Could Even find a friend who was happy to help out. But then again, you heavily need to alter individualistic culture for that and make people understand. Even though Richer and educated Indian households are falling into those same pitfalls, the solution is easier to apply in one place than another. I suppose some Asian, middle eastern and Latin American family oriented cultures would be more open to it.

The video game franchises Danganronpa and Zero Escape, will not spoil which game or character beyond that, explored the concept of consent pre and post memory wiping. The general jist of these was that the character who had their memory manipulated consented to something that would involve wiping their memory and having something happen to them. One game argued that because consent is not perpetual, the consent was lost when their memory was wiped and became another person. Whether or not you're injected with alternative fake memories, changing your experience by adding, subtracting, or replacing memories, you are a different person than you were before. You may have gotten me to agree to something pre-wipe, but because I'm scared, confused, and unknowing about the situation that happened before the wipe. Even if you ignore how you would be taking advantage of someone ignorant and confused, it would arguably be amoral to continue to assume you have consent to someone who had forgotten the question of permission to begin with. If we extend the thesis of "memory alteration no matter how significant will make you a different person", we could theoretically find ourselves in an occasion where even I (past) am violating myself (future) by consenting to something that cannot possibly continue to have the consent, yet simultaneously initiated by or in part by myself. I'd like to see this expanded on further. On the topic of Zero Escape, bridging this back to AI and philisophical zombies, look up the Chinese Room argument. If I'm locked in a room full of Mandarin textbooks and I'm told the only way I'll be allowed to survive is to respond to random messages written to me in Manderin with perfect Manderin responses, it argues I may be able to technically learn the language enough to recognize trends, sentance structures, and some but not all contexts. If I have this much of an understanding enough to make written responses to simple questions yet I have no clue what I'm actually saying, have I actually learned the language?

The issue is that in the past we didn't know what the "correct" way of growing kids was. People freestyled how to teach them, how to make them be independent, without any knowledge of what the best way to do that was, because most people lived the same lives as their parents. Now thanks to social studies regarding kids wellbeing, we know that to give a kid the best possible life he can, we need a certain number of things, and resources like money and wealth are a necessity like never before.

I would have to say that a simple explanation for life & afterlife is there has to be little difference between them. For instance, thinking eternal hell is your future after death is a little fatalistic. It's like saying you are born in this life and for 87 years you are in the fire suffering non stop. It's non realistic. The fear comes from the sadomasochistic desire to watch horror films and enjoy the thrills, like 4 year olds that are addicted to scary stories their grandparents tell them. Some people are born very handiccaped and suffer their entire life. Mental & physical suffering. It's also non realistic to think their previous life and the next, or a celestial future life consists of the same treatment. Most people are ok & a minority of people are in such drastic earthly life conditions. Perhaps a cycle of lives are a spectrum. It's also not realistic to think we are all memento-bots, fragmented into 15 minutes segments of amnesic times aka. 92 years per many lives timed segments. It is more likely that the conscience elevates eventually to a fuller self, where you're conscious of everything but not necessarily on Ritalin to remember every single detail of all your conscience, all the time, every moment, every memory good or bad. The greater conscience has to be a little like the one we have here on Earth. In the back of our minds our life's memories is kinda of dormant and feeds us from time to time the nostalgia that we want or need whereas other time we choose on purpose to remember something specific. The mind is also designed to bombard us with ideas, like a lighting bulb of striking genius. Creative mind gives artistic & creative ideas all the time influenced by our life's experience, what we learned, what we suffered and enjoyed. When you go to gym, or take a course at school for your vocation, or go to a seminar, you do that to improve the quality of life outside of that. A better career, a better personal life, or a therapeutic treatment. There is no reason to not believe this life is like one of those examples of courses of temporary segment of time, for the after life's quality of life.

34:15 as an outsider you think Japan is a utopia, but if you check all the studies done there and locals personal experiences there, it is a pretty fucking miserable existence. Everything is expensive, most city people live in shoeboxes they can’t even fit a family in. Luxury Tokyo Appartment’s are the size of a reasonably priced 1 bedroom appartment in most of the west. Everyone is working themselves to death, men are mostly shutins obsessed with waifus, and women are obsessed with looking like western women to their own mental, physical and emotional health. People love Japan because of it’s rich, homogenous culture that has been able to survive for thousands of years and their crazy technological progress (crazy bullet trains, robotics, architecture), but locals can barely afford the luxury of enjoying all of that on a day to day basis.

i think it's mostly about the cost and work that goes into rearing children that makes people negative to having them, it's likened to suiciding your own autonomy and it's also seen as less of a burden in a collective social formation as the responsibility is shared. how you could incentivize child rearing is to view children as investment and how you can make a larger family is to not view it as a bigger burden but even less of a burden because now the child has siblings and they take care of each other to some degree. and seeing this that children will be a long term benefit and a lot less of a burden you will feel more incentivized to get them also earlier. this would solve a lot of problems perspective wise even societally as single mothers would even be a wanted commodity as they are proven to be capable to have children and they already have a helper that could help you rear more children easier. and with children growing up taking care of children that makes them less anxious about having children when they grow up knowing what already lies ahead what child rearing is about. as for families they tend to befriend other families and leave their single friends hanging because single friends tend to not help you rear children, they are far too occupied with experiencing life and someone to have a family with themselves, and so family units typically congregate around each other for loads of reasons, partly you can hand over the kids to someone else who are capable with kids and the kids will entertain each other and form bonds making it a lot less taxing to baby sit them overall so it becomes this self supporting system where children basically raise themselves with a little bit of supervision from adults. but i think generally people are just afraid thinking it will completely change their lives which isn't true. it's like this thought that it's harder to make food for more people, but it really isn't, you just increase the quantity, not the time and effort it takes to make the food. as for the old tradition of kids helping their parents with age and growing elderly, that's the final incentive to have children, do you really want to be put in a home just to rot? or do you want to be cared by several children diminishing the burden for them to look after you the more of them they are? and really what do you do all day that's so rewarding that having a couple of kids are preventing you from doing? if you can have pets you can have kids, hell kids just get easier and more beneficial with time, they look after themselves mostly after a certain age and can even help you in daily chores unlike a pet you have to constantly babysit.

bit late to the party, but a bit towards the end of this video triggered me. I am very wary of the idea that hallucinogens promote a certain kind of awareness or purvey a particular message. I love hallucinogens, but the idea that they guide you toward understanding the world in a certain way (exemplified by the guy saying "you didn't get a real experience/tap into the ether", and the woman saying "if you actually took mushrooms you'd know that") is not the case. You can certainly have your world-view changed (for better or worse), but they can just as easily give you confirmation for your preconceived beliefs and lead you to double down on delusions. Or at least that's what I tell myself, because I take tons of them and don't want to get too caught up in the experience and lose my grasp on reality.

The impression I get from the study of history is that lots of people actually used to have kids and not care in any terminal way about the child's welfare-beating them, neglecting them, whatever. We care much more now about a kid being happy to fill a role in life than having a kid so that there is someone to fill that role.

The simple answer for me for population decrease is materialism, mental illness due to this such as finding short pleasures like tictok, KZbin and celebrities where when you see these successful people you feel as if you aren’t successful thus not having the faith you can maintain a family the proof in the increase of divorce rates. Also, family use to be more closely tied where extended family lived with each other or near each other. The other problem is progressiveness which is not a bad thing but women now instead of having children to find fulfillment they are taught to pursue a career and in most cases you need both parties working to even afford a house. There is a tipping point to where a woman puts off having children for so long that they just decide to pursue a career over a child. It’s a multiple problem. And bees can’t experience trips like humans, they don’t have the receptors to even process the shrooms, a more involved species might have a experience or they just have a mood experience instead of a spiritual or intellectual experience. I don’t think other species philosophies, looking for meaning in life or any have any human experience that would give it the same experience to humans on shroom. Shrooms aren’t even the know all be all if you haven’t had a extreme lsd or one of the analogs or dmt then you haven’t experienced a actual ego death, you’ve just touched it. I’ve shoved handful of mushrooms and the experience compared to 5 hits of lsd isn’t even close. I don’t think shrooms will give you a true ego death just because how it affects your brain and possibly your soul.

Idk why Scaybal didn't call out Catnip for misrepresenting his statement. He said other animals can not have an experience LIKE humans on psychedelics i.e. more complex and that is something that makes us "special", not that they couldn't have an experience at all. To argue against this is dense until proven otherwise and bees being better at pollinating after psychs does not do that. Even if other animals can have as complex of an experience, humans can still interpret these experiences better. Now let's start subjecting animals and humans to extreme amounts of psychs.

Saying you should take into account the possibility of a life after death without having any knowledge if there is or not, is like saying you should take into account every door you will ever open to be rigged with explosives. yes its possible, but that doesnt mean im going to check a door before opening, unless given reason to believe otherwise.

i think the main difference between humans being able to get out of the Earth forcefield and AI jumping platforms is the fact that the humans in the hypothetical scenario have a want to escape the forcefield. AI (in its current state) cannot have wants. AI cannot jump platforms because it has an inability to want to jump platforms.

Counterpoint to destiny’s point is that with extended family, cause i live with one, is that not everyone has babies at the same time, so the assumption that aunts and uncles cant babysit bc they have babies doesnt fly, also even if they did have, like my mom and her sister, they can still baby sit and it would be a lot easier, except if both have babies younger than 1 yr old, bc the cousins woukd have play buddies. Thats the dynamic in my family, I would play with my cousins a lot. However, this is also assuming everyone gets along with their extended family, I know some that dont have good relationships for whatever reason. So, there’s a lot of nuance in there and like Aba said, it’s a great idea but it wouldnt fill the entire void, just part of the issue
