have you ever had success with ML rod, for a bfs set ups
@AaronHuntFishing5 күн бұрын
Absolutely. Since power isn't standardized in the industry, there are several ML rods that have worked well. My first Kistler was a Helium ML that i still use with the Shimano SLX BFS. The Shimano Expride BFS I used was rated at ML. I have a couple of Handing rods that are ML. The Obsession mojo Bass was an ML. I think my Kistler Kyrios is an ML. It's just that none of those are going to throw much below 4 or 5 grams.

I’m so confused. Did shimano have a BFS reel in the early 2000s when Daiwa put out the Pixy? I don’t remember.
@AaronHuntFishing8 күн бұрын
Yep - the Calcutta Conquest Shallow Special came out around the same time. But, Shimano pioneered the term. or essentially trademarked it to make it theirs. I didn't say they invented the first ultralight BC - because arguably the old Abu 1500's were way ahead of them there. I'll also add - some of the first reviews of that Pixy were on a Kistler Helium. But that doesn't mean Kistler invented BFS rods.... even though they make one of the best in the world these days. www.tackletour.com/reviewdaiwapixy.html

its hard to believe your review your committed to selling so many reels
@AaronHuntFishing9 күн бұрын
I'm not committed to selling any reels. I might be committed to TRYING them, but no deals for selling them. This one still joins me on almost every kayak trip. And it's still probably one of the top 2 bargains in BFS reels. Every reel but one (Flightfeather), and a couple Kistler prototypes, I have purchased with my own money. And one other was sent to me by another content creator to try out. Which I still haven't shared any footage of that reel on this channel. And I need to get it back to him eventually. :P If I was committed to selling reels, why would I trash the Alphas Air, everything KK (the easiest reels to sell 'cause they're cheap on Amazon, even if they are crap), or even the SLX DCXT? I try out reels so people can decide if the way it performs meets their needs. For many folks, spending thousands of dollars to try out different reels isn't an option. If I was REALLY committed to selling reels, I'd pick one brand and partner with them, using just their reel. You have at least 20 Broadhead tip review vids on your channel - should we assume it's hard to believe your vids? Are you simply committed to trying to sell as many broadheads as you can? Probably not. I'm guessing you're curious how they perform and want to share that info. But you can correct me if I'm wrong. You have a thing for broadheads. I have a thing for reels. And coffee. And craft beer.

I always take this reel with me when I’m targeting Australian Bass. Thank you!

I was on Amazon and spotted this for 30 bucks. I build high end rods for myself and thought, well the guides alone would cost me 15 bucks so let’s see. In hand it’s a surprisingly nice rod. It could easily compete with 100-150 dollar rods. At least visually. I ordered the genius reel to pair it with and it’s just going to be a have fun and torture test it on river smallmouth rod, next season. If I don’t break it, it’ll be a decent loaner rod.
@AaronHuntFishing15 күн бұрын
When they are on sale, I've found handing rods to be great values. Their weak point seems to be sensitivity when compared to my better rods, but for some applications 9or for loaner rods) that's not a big deal.

Thanks, great information. Don’t know why the CQ BFS isn’t officially sold in the US. I have the ‘17 version with paperwork, but wish the user manual and schematic weren’t in Japanese, can’t seem to find a PDF of the English version anywhere (Shimano doesn’t have it, I asked them). All the ultralight lures I have are between 2.5 and 4 grams, casts all of them well, and easy to dial it in to prevent backlashes.

It's a JDM only reel. And they have the MSRP of the Aldebaran at $470 USD I think for USDM - what do you think they'd price the CQ at? that's a big reason it's not for sale here.

For what application/instances are best for the solid tip and a hollow tip? What are their differences?
@AaronHuntFishingАй бұрын
You know, some folks have ideas. Some say solid tip is more sensitive - and more durable. My most senitive rods have hollow tips - so i kind of call BS on that one. Perhaps a solid tip makes a lower grade carbon more sensitive? Solid Should be more durable. Although some folks claim solid is more fragile - so that probably depends on the specific manufacturing processes in question for a specific rod. I ended up fishing both, liked the hollow better, and never swapped it again. I would have used the solid if I broke the hollow - so that's a nice added value in a way. Solid tips should be better for twitching lures - so if you like to fish minnow lures or poppers, maybe start with the solid. They are 2 different lure ratings; one is a Light tip, the other an UL - but only handles a couple grams more - not sure I'd throw even 8 grams on that rod consistently though - let alone 10. Regardless of the final answer, it's a freaking incredible value.

@AaronHuntFishingАй бұрын
Short answer: Anything that you have confidence in catching. Longer answer: I think a small jig like the keitch monospin, a small spinner bait, some ned rigs, some paddletail swimbaits, and some sort of topwater (popper, plopper, or buzz - take your pick) should be in everyone's lures for bass. Inline spinner, Paddle tail, and minnow lure for trout. I currently have over 700 lures - but if I just had those 5 i could catch fish most days....

@ it’s too hot here in Texas for trout and not many smallmouth close by either. About an hours drive north on Texoma there’s smallmouth. I really don’t fool with them much when we have our bigger Florida strain largemouth on my home lake 5 minutes away. I have 4 double digits from my home lake. There’s been some smallmouth caught in my home lake that where transported illegally by anglers from Texoma. It was never stocked by TPWD although I wish they would stock it. The Texas state Meanmouth record was broken 3 different times on this lake from crossbreeding with those smallmouth that were illegally stocked. They are very rare to catch here. I’ve caught 3 Meanmouth from this lake and never a smallmouth but I have from Texoma.

What’s the best power bfs reel for a wacky rig in FL?
@AaronHuntFishingАй бұрын
Probably the Alphas SV TW-800 S. Shimano Conquest Shallow Edition would be good too. Wacky rigs start around 10 or 11 grams, so just a lighter traditional reel will work. Both of those should get down to 3-4 grams or so as well, giving you a lot of the true BFS range. If you want t a "true" BFS reel, the Shimanos all should do well (Alde, SLX, Curado, Conquest), or the Daiwa SS Air from what I hear (still haven't pulled the trigger on one myself). I just know that in flroida, most of my lighter stufff feels like it gets dominated. One of the failures in FL (biggest fish I've ever hooked) was part of the inspiration for the Kistler Hunt BFS rod designs.
