Hey thanks for posting Coach Greg! Long time fan here, old guy. I haven't raced BMX since 2012. I may be back soon with the old and crotchidy cruiser class. Hand is definitely up on dropping a tooth being easier. I worked 44/16 on 175mm cranks back in the day. I got to where I stayed in the pack but couldn't always get around it or through it. I dropped to 43/16 and my holeshots came alive, battling in the turns became a little easier. I am guessing My ability to spin outweighed my muscle fiber recruitment. I d0 feel I hit a plataeu and flattened. Fast forward another decade plus, today I built an older style bike using 177.5mm crank length and other stuff in my parts bin. If I stay with it, I will upgrade to newer tech. However 177.5mmm...... I want to add leverage, I fear that I may be looking for a split gear or something altogether different. Today's slick tires seem to offer a smaller diameter/circumference than I remember. I feel you are going to tell me I am over thinking it. Any thoughts?

How do you determine when to jump or when to manual? I am a 50 yo newb.
@BMXTraining8 ай бұрын
For me, jumping made sense when it was either more consistent and roughly the same outcome in terms of maintaining or gaining speed over a particular obstacle. Manualing made sense when it was simply faster to do. Sometimes you can get a bigger pump off the backside with a manual compared to simply jumping.

Measurements for high watts and a dehydrated weight isn't watts per killo bud. You have to actually weigh the same for the number. Not that it matters the bumber was not achived for the full 5 seconds. 2 revolution is not watts it's torque.

The hard part for newbies in bmx racing is the lack of info. There isn’t much rider support or anything to draw in new riders. Literally 95% of the new riders are people who used to race years ago. Or kids whose parents raced at one time. Bmx racing is very cliquey. Plus getting access to a track sucks too. They are barely open, 1 or 2 nights a week for a couple of hours. No other time to get track practice. They run gates for a while but all the regulars get in over and over and make the wiggly guy feel dumb. Plus a state the size of Virginia will have tons of tracks while Texas has like 8. So only about 28% of the population actually has access to it. Usabmx doesn’t help, they just make stuff more expensive or harder to achieve. Bmx channels are very few and either have info for kids or the video is 10 years long. There isn’t really info on proper workouts or training. And if you ask on a fb page or anywhere for tips, you get the same response, track time. Bmx racing is never going to grow with the way it is now. It will remain a stagnant mess..

@John-ou4rm11 ай бұрын

He’s doing 180+
@John-ou4rm11 ай бұрын
@@BMXTraining Ok, let's assume the 180 cadence. As a pro international coach said the top cyclists can do 1800-2000 watts. Only if your on performance enhancers can you do above 2000. The world's best do 21x watt/kg. This guy is purporting to do 31x or something similar. Sorry, I smell BS. He'd be a world class track cyclist, he doesn't have the physical stature to deliver 2600 watts, the kilo world record holder can deliver 2000 watts. Anyway, I don't really care. I just think BS is going on.
@BMXTraining11 ай бұрын
John, man, I now understand the context, thank you, and you're filtering based off of what you know of cyclists. Please consider the demands of BMX racing. The race is about getting ahead of the guy next to you from a stand start and you have to do this pretty much within the first full pedal stroke out of the gate. This is where torque is at it's highest. Whereas, a track sprinter, or even a road sprinter are producing maximum power when generally there is less inertia to overcome as they're already in motion. BMXers are not trained to wind up for 10 seconds and then produce a 10 second high averaged all out sprint like track cycling sprinters. We're trained to produce high torque from a stand start, that's it. It's nothing exciting. Nic is producing his peak torque from a stand start. It's not uncommon for even amateur BMXers to produce above 2000 watts on any given test (no sauce needed) Shoot, I even hit a peak of 2200 back in the year 2000, not that big of a deal for BMXers. Again, from a stand start. Could BMXers cross over to track? Yes and no. Jamie Staff won a gold medal at the Olympics being the number one starter in the team sprint for GB. Roy Vanderburgh for Netherlands is another one who is a gold medal BMX cross over into track. But just because some coach says top cyclist produce 2000 watts, doesn't make everybody that can do that an automatic Elite track racer. And top track racers that cross over to BMX would get smoked out of the gate by pros who produce less watts, Context matters. And in this case, Nic still destroyed the watt bike within a 3 second drop. It's what he is trained to do, get the holeshot, and he grabbed the holeshot at the 2016 Olympic final. He would get lit up in a match sprint. On a road bike, he wouldn't mske it pass 5km. On a flying 200, he would cramp on the wind up, and he would have a tough time doing a stand start with a heavy track gear. The demand is different. BMXers are known for precision first 3 seconds. Hopefully this make sense, or not.@@John-ou4rm
@John-ou4rm11 ай бұрын
@@BMXTraining No because 1s peak power IS a measurement test that is used. Watt bike was designed for cycling teams and then became used by professional sports teams. I actually have a watt bike pro. Physics comes into play, the absolute top of class at world level sprint can do around 2000 watt for 1s (or part therefore as watt bike measures 100x per second). Which is generally around 21 watts per kg. This guy is achieving around 31. It's actually and almost certainly impossible unless you're taking steroids etc. It's like being 20% better than the absolute world's best, and they have a muscle physique to indicate why they can push out 2000 watts I'd say he's spoofed the data into the control box.

I have a Cruiser after starting at 48y with 39x17 but feel I need to go bit lighter for a better gate start. Would I go 38x17 or 40x18 better? Not easy to understand the difference since both result in reduced roll length.
@JayDeeTee Жыл бұрын
This is maybe as complex as the neck brace discussion. I started BMX Race end last year with age 48 together with my son at 9 years. In our race club kids are allowed to wear clipless after 12y. My son just started but is hella fast and can compete right away with some experienced kids but on jumps he already slipped 2 times from pedals and me too. I changed to clipless for training but have a weird combo on my bike now. Shimano T8000 Duo and Northwave Corsair 2 shoes. So I can do a round unclipped and next round clipped😅. For passive jumps clipped in feels much better and would help my son I think.

@mikeyseibert1406 Жыл бұрын
@BMXTraining no, I totally understand. I watch some of them. But freeing up an hour or so is hard, especially while trying to absorb the info. I'm 46, and I got back into bmx racing at the beginning of 2023. Usabmx put me in intermediate, even though I haven't raced or been on track in 15 years. So, I'm trying to learn proper workout routines. There seems to be plenty of videos on gates, on bike parts and set up, and even some less than 2 minute videos on cornering and passing. But when it comes to nutrition and excersize, it's very lacking. I have a gate, a Sprint block, and i even built a weight room in my spare bedroom. But not knowing what you are doing or when and how to do it sux. The local gyms have been no help either (I do live in a small college town) because all they know is how to burn fat or get ripped 😆 😅 I think some 25-30 min videos that just explained things without the live stream banter, that just got to the meat of the lesson, would be popular. I'm not alone either, I've talked to a lot of people at tracks across the country. They all agree that those type videos would be great. I'm not bagging on your videos, I just want to get stronger and faster, and the ability to get that info is not there. Thanks

The rpm (revolutions per minute) are the same. The angular velocity is the thing that changes. Your feet go around the same amount of times per minute- rpm unchanged- but the angular velocity is increased (velocity is a vector, therefore it is force in a specified direction). Similarly, you don't overcome inertia, you increase or decrease it. Inertia is the property of a body to remain at the state it is at. A spinning body will want to spin, but friction stops it. A rolling body will roll unless force stop it. Likewise a body at rest will stay at rest and will only move by an increase in its inertia. Like you, I have swapped crank lengths lots of times, but I would change tyres or gears to make sure I was hitting the first jump with my cranks level my preferred stance. And is the first jump is close, perhaps then put on longer cranks 😁 But great job you're doing on here, I watch intermittently, but must watch more. Thanks.

Hello Greg - Great Video - thank you - Two questions: 1.) In your opinion, what is the best position to place your lead crank for the gate start? And, 2.) Where do you prefer someone to position their handle bars relative to their forks?
