A lot of Americans also say that they'll only buy "American made cars" but when you present them the list of most "American made" vehicles (Tesla, Toyota, Honda, etc.) they all say "not those cars." We Americans, as a general rule, have a very skewed idea of what's made in America and really just mean the perceived American vehicle brands, even though the next week these same people will complain about these same brands they pledge to patronize closing plants and shipping jobs to Mexico.

I think losing the tax credit will maybe hurt tesla more than Musk might think. The model 3 starts in the low 40s, a hybrid camry starts in the low 30s, if a shopper just wants to save money on gas and doesn't care about the extra features that price difference looks pretty big. However, with the tax credit at point of sale the price is really comparable making the model 3 the no brainer in that 2 car comparison.

This system does not appear to be standards based, it appears to be a proprietary, hybrid AC/DC systems similar to the Ford/SunRun system. Use with a NACS connector for anything beyind grid-down power backup will be technically difficult due to the lack of seperate AC and DC wires in the connector. Tom is correct that inexpensive, transfer switch based grid-down AC backup should be an offering. Using the NACS connector, proper V2X systems need to be either entirely AC or entirely DC. Entirely AC systems like the Tesla solution will be a hard sell to the utilities, since they basically allow roaming, potentially uncertified (by them) inverters to connect and interact with the grid. Entirely DC solutions (such as the Enphase prorotypes) with off-board inverters seem to be the most likely solutions to be accepted by the utility, and also allow a DC home charger to bypass the power limitations of the AC on-board charger.
@nc38262 күн бұрын
That was all mentioned in the post.... The problem is there's no standard.... Just a lot of protocols.... But at least what Ford and GM is doing is more flexible, than what Tesla is offering.
@chriswestenskow52022 күн бұрын
@ The protocols are what the finalized standards will be comprised of. The problem is that none of them for V2X are finalized and when they do become finalized, most of the EVs on the road may not be able to be updated to support them. Ford, Telsa and GM all decided not to wait. Enphase is developing solutions based on the developing standards, but will not likely release a product offering until the standards are agreed to. I’m not a fan of the Tesla approach because it is the most proprietary and is entirely dependent on the on-board charger being bidirectional. I believe this also causes there to be a limitation that the EV can not provide inverter power to loads while AC charging. The inverter being “mobile” may also cause much grief for many utilities for any use case that involves the grid being operational (arbitrage, peak shaving etc.) The Ford and GM solutions are variations on a theme and are based on more or less “standard” solar inverters, with one of the battery inputs going to the EVs battery through the DC charging wires. I like that they use wall mounted inverters, since that is more likely to be accepted by nearly all utilities. The system the Enphase has prototyped works much more seamlessly, and I believe it will use DC charging to overcome the limitations of the NACS connector.
@nc38262 күн бұрын
Protocols are not standards.... Even after they are officially finalized they will allow more than one way to perform a task.... Such as how energy is transferred from the vehicle to the home or grid via AC or DC.... Both will be an available option.... It's one of the reasons why CCS, DCFC has been so problematic in NA ... In Europe they created standards and in North America they simply defaulted to what Tesla was offering.... Since The supercharger Network Was so much more reliable vs CCS... What can I say sometimes a closed ecosystem monopoly is just more efficient.... V2X Is about a decade behind DCFC In terms of standardization and interoperability....

Politics of Elon Musk aside, me and my wife saw a lot of negatives in Tesla vehicles long before the CEO went rogue in politics. Just a few: still harsh ride, unreliable front wheel control arms, unreliable door handles, low profile tires prone to flats if the potholes are on the road, coupefied unpractical rear with not so much headroom in the rear, unusable third row seats, compromised luggage compartments due to coupe shape, inability to have a proper sunroof, inability to have a factory solution to shade the glass rooftop, if anyone tries to install an aftermarket luggage rack on Tesla a slight misalignment will crack that expensive roof, very shody brake disk material - rottens out in a salty winter up north, inability to give some accommodation for drivers coming from ICE world - impossibility to switch off one pedal driving, lack of turning signal stalks, lack of a display in front of the driver, no head up display on winshield, even lack of drive forward or backwards choice except from the main screen, inconvenient changing port in the rear even for towing rated Teslas like Cybertruck or Model X, unreliable chicken wings on Model X, uncomfortable seats with no massage, no ventilation, frameless doors in 2-3 years do not seal the rubber properly whistling in cold winter, no apple car play or android auto, shoddy job with automatic rain sensors, easy breaking windshield wipers motors, still considerable fantom drain of high voltage battery after so many years of development. Frankly speaking Tesla are not even cars but automotive gliders with somewhat decent computer inside, decent motors, improving battery. Tesla Superchargers cannot provide current for 800 V type for its own 800 V vehicle - Cybertruck.

He personally owns a large portion of Tesla, is donating hundreds of million $ to Donald Trump in cash and visibility on X and will likely be part of the Trump cabinet. I love your content, but I won't watch any video that you post that has an anti-Tesla headline. It's okay to if you want to mention the consumer's preference in the story, but seems very much like clickbait to include it otherwise.
@krugerdave4 күн бұрын
@@rdrice1960 if it's the core requirement for the consumer and a defining theme for the show, then I think it's legitimate. I mean, by all means, you do you, and I respect the stance, but given recent events the Elon thing is having a bit of a moment. I get wanting to fight for Tesla, but it's no longer about protecting the fledgling EV company from douchebags rolling coal at them, it's about people voting with their feet after Elon took a pretty definitive stance in opposition to what's probably a substantial majority of his customers (and IMO to the detriment of most of the world's population). If Elon can make an environmentalist out of Trump then he'll have redeemed himself to a degree, but if he's supporting the guy who's all about killing emissions regulations and pulling the States out of the Paris agreement, then that undoes a lot of what he's accomplished with Tesla, at least as I see it. As I say, I get where you're coming from, but I think that title was legit.

@@krugerdave While I disagree with your assessment of Elon hurting the brand, I appreciate your response. Our views may not politically align, but I respect your right to disagree. In full disclosure, I am a longtime stockholder that has purchased 3 Teslas. Elon's views did not prevent me from investing in stock or the product in the past and it will not prevent me from investing in the future. Teslas are simply the best vehicles that I have ever owned. Lastly, the current administration has managed to convert Elon (and a lot of other Democrats) into a Republican. Biden's decision to exclude Tesla from the EV summit was because of Elon's position on unions, not his environmental positions. If they were in favor of clean air, why exclude Tesla?

@@jirwin32 That is not what I am saying at all. There are many talented people working at Tesla from all walks of life. Tesla is more than one man. Suggesting in the title that Elon is the reason to dismiss Tesla is purely clickbait.
@Cyrribrae3 күн бұрын
@@rdrice1960the headline says nothing about Elon. I support Tesla. But Elon believes in free speech, no? So shouldn't his followers be more comfortable with differing opinions? Cars are status symbols, people can choose their cars based on very personal factors. That doesn't have to threaten your personal self-worth that someone has a different preference. Besides, it makes for better episodes, because I know the Tesla lineup. And if there's a smoking deal on them, these guys usually tell us anyway. But it's all the other brands and cars that I'm not going to think of immediately that I want to be reminded of.

Man, I would not be surprised if Elon is ousted from Tesla in the next year or two. As other EVs improve and get access to the supercharger network, people lose patience with "quirks" like the lack of basic physical controls and run screaming from Elon's political proclivities (at least most people who up to now have been buying EVs), I can picture Tesla running into some pretty dire straits soon 😬 As for me, I thank Elon for his service to the world and to EV adoption, and kindly ask him to get on the first Starship to Mars 😉👋🚀
@gn0s1s3 күн бұрын
market cap would suggest otherwise.
@krugerdave3 күн бұрын
@gn0s1s Elon's tenure is dependent on the market cap, more so than the other way around, anyway. And market cap is dependent on sales and profit. I wouldn't be surprised if all three have peaked for the next while... Of course lots of TSLA hodlers won't be swayed, but not everyone is so faithful. I, for one, don't have stock, but I also don't wish the company ill. I'm just putting out the idea for consideration.
@ronaldgarrison84783 күн бұрын
Mostly agree. I do think Ilike the lack of "physical" controls is what I would like, although I'd have to drive it a while to be sure. But that's a fine point compared to the politics. If Elon falls hard, I will shed no tears. Back to the UI, I don't think the touch screen is by any means the ultimate tech. I like the idea of a gesture-based UI, and I just cannot figure why no one has implemented it yet.
@Cyrribrae3 күн бұрын
It would be dumb to do so, I think, even as a staunch Elon not-fan (I still think it's worth supporting Tesla for the sake of the bigger picture). For better or worse, this new administration will trade on personal influence and access, which Elon currently has. Any company tied to him is going to have to maintain that. And any company in his sights (OpenAI, for example) will have to mitigate that. Even if it's petty.
