Leave the rezzies alone and save the quota and encounters for the kings and ocean coho. Don’t let a repeat of last year happen. “Marine Area 10 (Seattle/Bremerton Area) salmon fishery update CORRECTION: Clarifies chum retention rules and West Elliott Bay seasons. Action: Closes retention of Chinook and changes coho daily limit to one (1). Clarifies chum retention rules and West Elliott Bay seasons. Species affected: Chinook and coho salmon. Effective dates, locations, and rules: Marine Area 10, except Elliott Bay, and year-round piers (Bremerton Boardwalk, Illahee State Park Pier, Seacrest Pier, and Waterman Pier): Immediately through Sept. 30, 2023: Salmon daily limit two including no more than one coho. No minimum size. Release Chinook and chum. Oct. 1 through Oct. 31, 2023: Salmon daily limit two including no more than one coho. No minimum size. Release Chinook. Elliott Bay, waters of Elliott Bay east of a line drawn from West Point to Alki Point, up to the mouth of the Duwamish River, and including Harbor Island: Aug. 18 through Sept. 30, 2023: Salmon daily limit two including no more than one coho. No minimum size. Release Chinook and chum. Oct. 1 through Oct. 31, 2023: Salmon daily limit two including no more than one coho. No minimum size. Release Chinook. Reason for action: The current estimate of Chinook sublegal encounters for the summer fishery is 9,471 of 7,748 total sublegal encounters (122%) agreed to in this year’s List of Agreed Fisheries (LOAF). Therefore, WDFW will close the fishery to Chinook retention. Additionally, the current estimate of coho catch for the month of July is 11,665 coho. The preseason expected catch of coho in the month of July was 4,810 coho, almost 250% above the expected catch. The retention limit for coho is being reduced to minimize impacts on coho stocks of concern.”

What depth are you trolling? I was thinking of getting out there in my kayak in Edmonds when it opens. I don’t have a down rigger, but was going to try snap weights to bring my gear down to depth
@nw_angler6 күн бұрын
It can vary quite widely. However, for reference, fishing for resident Coho this year I have hooked most of my fish at 15 feet actual depth. That being said, I have had to go as deep as 45-65 feet actual depth in past years for sea run Coho. If you have a fish finder you really have to go off of what you see. If you see grouped marks at a particular depth, try targeting that depth and going from there. Again, that being said, I have had the majority of my bites come when I see nothing on the fish finder. Wish I could give you a more exact answer but that's just how it goes.

I have been mostly fishing with my buddy on his boat so far this year. I actually got out on my Kayak this morning for some Kokanee at Lake Stevens. Went 3 for 12....😆. For smaller resident Coho I don't run my big brads. I use spoons or hoochies with an 8" flasher and herring scent. When we get after Chinook in the bubble or the fall run Coho I will use my brads with an 11" flasher or a spoon.

Truthfully it’s not a high quality device. If there were other options out there in an even remotely affordable price range I would go with those. That being said, it does work. I really can’t speak to how it performs over the long haul or after it is introduced to salt water(yet).

@@nw_anglerthat’s true, no decent options out there. Surprised go pro or dji didn’t make one that shape yet, I’m sure people have used regular ones and made and attachment to make it work. What is a good rod that you use to troll for salmon along with the length? Also, what is your weight of your cannon ball for your downrigger that you use? Thanks
@nw_angler24 күн бұрын
I’m not picky about rods. In my opinion, on a kayak, I like a shorter medium weighted rod. Like 7 or 8 feet. I use a 6lb downrigger ball.
@nw_angler24 күн бұрын
Honestly though, you can fish almost any rod on a downrigger.
@NghiaPham-xi5so24 күн бұрын
@@nw_angler Do you think a 3 or 4 pound ball would work? Thanks
@nw_angler23 күн бұрын
@@NghiaPham-xi5so yes, it could work for resident coho. Or when you only need to fish the top 20 or 30 feet. However, if you really want to reach more fish you should aim for at least 6 lbs. that being said, don’t exceed the limit specified by your down rigger manufacturer.

Do you ever use a bumper line or a snubber line when trolling for the salmon? Also, do you use a down rigger in your setup? If so, how far down do you usually go? Thanks
@nw_angler27 күн бұрын
I normally use a bumper from my braid to the flasher of only about 2 feet. Though, very recently I added a 30 foot bumper of 40 lb mono above the flasher (spliced with an FG knot) so that the line will hold better in the downrigger clip. I use a 6lb downrigger ball on my kayak with a cannon 2x ratio manual downrigger. The depth varries widely. For coho I'll usually fish the top 60 feet. For chinook it can be anywhere from bouncing the bottom to 50 feet depending on where I am fishing.

@Falcon361Ай бұрын
Thanks bro for the great info. One question: how do you set up your weight? And how much do you let the line go if you're speeding like 1mph?
@nw_anglerАй бұрын
I use a snap slider on my main line above my bumper. I have tried using a snap on weight rig but find that it is too much to deal with to unclip the weight while reeling the fish in. Sockeye are feisty. As far as length of line goes, at 1 mph it should t require much. It would also depend on the weight you are using. There are quite a few charts out there or calculators that can help with that. Also, at those speeds, you may be able to see your gear on the sonar to help gauge depth. I fish at 45’ actual depth all the time at baker regardless of what I see on sonar.
@Falcon361Ай бұрын
Dude doyou use weights? If so how do you set them up? Tnx😊
@nw_anglerАй бұрын
I use a down-rigger for one rod and a weight, 6 or 8 oz, for my other rod. I typically have a slider on my main line with beads above and below to protect my rod tip and my knot. The cannonball weights can attach directly to the slider. You really want to use the heavier weights because you don’t want to be long lining with all the other boats and kayaks out there. You really only need to fish about 45 feet down and at very slow speeds .7 - 1.2 or so mph so with those weights it shouldn’t take too much line out and it shouldn’t blow back too far.
