17:00 I feel another big problem with this line of story is that while it sounds interesting that the player can figure out what's going on but doesn't have to (and can just keep killing things), the real issue for me is often that IF you figure it out as a player, the game doesn't really give you options to act on that knowledge. This is best shown in all the NPC side quests where they ultimately die no matter what you do. Even if you figure out they are going into your doom, your only other choice is to either kill them on the spot or just ignore them. Which I guess is a choice, but I always think that ignoring stuff on purpose isn't quite a satsifying way. However, the only way the game gives you options is by choosing your ending. Problem is just that all these endings are mostly a cutscene and you yourself now have to interpret if it was good or bad. While that sounds interesting on paper, it kind of ruins the whole point of the player having to actively figure out what is going on. If I just miss critical information and choose a "bad ending" (which some might even argue don't even exist), I never SEE the consequences of me messing up. I can come to that conclusion if I hear someone else interpret the endings, but at this point, I am just putting someone else's interpretation over my own. By obfuscating the story this much, the choice for an ending becomes completely irrelevant. Which might be a meta take from the developers, but when they boast about the game having 6 different endings (or at least 3 if you don't want to count all the other color swaps), then I would expect these endings to have an immediate effect on me. Not after I have seen ALL, but after I got one. Of course, I don't need a lot of interpretation to understand that the frenzy ending is probably supposed to be bad with how it's presented, but then again, that's like one of the least obfuscated details to begin with. You only ever choose that ending, because you want to see how bad it can go. And because it's always a bit hard to imagine what someone means, let's just talk about Sekiro for a moment, which also has a bunch of different endings and is also made by FromSoftware. While the story is a bit more straight forward, a lot of things are still very obfuscated from the player, so much that they can make decisions that lead to a "worse" ending. While I doubt many have chosen the Shura ending on their first playthrough, it is quite clear that the standard ending is depressing. And you KNOW that this isn't all there is to it, because even if you don't find anything, you know there are characters that hinted at you doing something differently. Point is, if you reach that ending after not having discovered any of the two alternate versions, then you KNOW you are supposed to feel bad. Which is not necessarily the emotion in Elden Ring, especially with all the different throne endings (and even Ranni's) where you are mostly kept guessing how all of that will turn out at the end of the day and it's mostly just your head cannon.

I actually think that the dialogue options in night in the woods that feel the exact same work in its favour; the game isn't giving you the option to do the right thing it's showing you the only things that Mae would think to do in these scenarios. My favourite example of this is after dinner at beas house, where during your conversation you can only say equally awful things because Mae doesn't understand Bea's scenario and doesn't know how to back down, so you can't try to fix the situation. You can only watch as Mae digs the hole deeper and deeper, then leaves the house. I think this wouldn't be as effective if there was an option to back down and Bea doesn't let you or something like that, and it's a clever way of showing you Mae's personality. Night in the woods is very good at not creating narrative dissonance (?) between the player and Mae. Another example of this is the guy who doesn't want you to go on his porch. The player wants to go on the porch to see what the guy will say, Mae would go on the porch just to annoy him lol

When I played outer wilds I learned very quickly that I hated dying especially to the sun. Whether I overcooked it approaching the ember twins or the song started playing at the end I would just immediately pause and meditate. What sat with me more than anything was that there wasn’t an ending where I could keep the sun from exploding. I hated the inevitability of it so I avoided it. I never actually finished the game. I would rather have kept the world going for 20 minutes at a time than let the world end. I couldn’t figure out how to let go of both myself and the world. I didn’t want to break the cycle because that would mean everyone died permanently and I didn’t know how to process that. I don’t think I was ever able to process the fact that none of it ever mattered

keep in mind basically everything Shammy says is her opinion. and while she explains her opinion well. it is important to remember the Surge has mixed receptions. for everyone who dislikes it there is someone who likes it. For example I love the evil within 1. But it has a ton of flaws I can personally don't have many issues with. But i understand people who do.

Goddamn this game loves bringing out the whiney, self-obsessed, thoughtless fools. It's a great game. It handles and presents its themes in a very thoughtful and brilliant way. But the fact that it took a video game to make y'all realize these incredibly basic truths is downright sad. And that's not even mentioning the fact of how hard you, Shammy, missed the fucking point, the entire message of the game. It's not about 'ooooh waaaaaaah I'm gunna die and I'll be done waaaaaah", it's about spending the time you do have fruitfully and with people you enjoy. Something you, shammy, will never do. You spent so much time laying down sick bantz on the twatters and getting in fights with internet strangers for what? To get your goddamn brain scrambled up and get a dozen new fears and anxieties? You're not a deep thinker, you're the opposite, a totally thoughtless dope that's too easily influenced. Log off. Take a long walk. Reconnect with reality. There's so much more to this world than the computer universe.

I don't understand how someone could play this game and somehow take away "Nothing matters" from this when the ending is in such stark opposition to this idea. The actions of the player matter, the actions of the Nomai that lead the player to the eye matter. The only moment where things can truly feel hopeless is when you reach the sun station and you realize that your original goal is futile, but you have a new goal to move on to at that point. There is a quote from Solanum that demonstrates the whole thesis of the ending sequence beautifully and, ironically, I saw it in another comment that seemed to be in support of this nihilistic take that Shammy came to: "It’s tempting to linger in this moment, while every possibility still exists. But unless they are collapsed by an observer, they will never be more than possibilities." They eye needs an observer. Your whole journey leads into you doing something of greater consequence than any other action since the beginning of the universe. Maybe not everything you do matters, but that doesn't mean nothing does. It's clear Shammy played this game a lot during the midst of a prolonged mental breakdown and it had a profound affect, compounded by tons of projecting, I can't judge, I've been there. I hope they come back to this game in the future in a more serene headspace where they can find the nugget of hope nestled at the bottom of hours of futility. edit: remember when "an actual review" used to be a joke?

How is effectively restarting the universe supposed to be a hopeful thing? You're dooming countless people to the same fate you were subjected to. Like, I get that it tries to spin it as a hopeful thing, by showing the happy campfire and wondrous exploration stuff in the end image. But how would you feel if they showed nomai hugging as they suffocate, or the stars dying? Because assuming you kickstarted a newbig bang, that's what your great accomplishment has to entail.

@@tahunuva4254 You're not dooming anyone, the universe was already at its end. The Nomai texts and simply watching the stars wink out of the heavens make it clear how dead the universe truly is at this point. Reminder that by the end of the cycle every other star in the sky has exploded, and they were destroyed years if not decades or centuries ago. The Hearthian system may well be the very last one that still harbors life and, to be quite frank, they've got less than half an hour to live. If you don't want to doom anyone but yourself, simply wait for the sun to go supernova once you reach the eye, their deaths are inevitable, your hands are clean, and a new universe can live on through your actions.

These are enjoyable reviews, and make me want to play the games more than I wanted to before. FOR ANYONE WONDERING Overwatch 2 has gotten rid of a tank slot, making most of what shammy talked about here even more obvious and frustrating now to a even wider variant of people given how tank is miserable to play and TTK has gotten so short that healing had to be buffed so it's all just a excercise of either dying instantly or never dying and the entire game being a bore. Paladins continued for a while down their streak of bad character design before streamlining the game so where the item shop was even more simplified (the blast and direct damage items being combined, the reduced healing on damage item becoming basekit. Maldamage being...taken out. 3 talents instead of 4 etc.) to the point where the hitboxes make even less sense. The fanbase is dwindling rapidly Gigantic after years of private support has come back in 2024!! It's on steam right now for 20$ or something like that, no microtransactions and seems to be doing well!! fingers crossed for its future. Everything Shammy said in this video about that game is still accurate from what i can tell.

@@mrmac2340 According to my research Eugenious Transgenderio was an Italian man from 1300 B.C. and is the first instance of the term being used. Apparently in one of her collected diaries she describes feeling like she was born in the wrong body. A lot of her writings line up with what people are experiencing today. I can't say she was the first, but in recorded history she may have been the one to invent transgenderism.
