That is good to know if I end up not being able to fix the tire clearance. Do you know if the 3rd Gen has the reluctor wheel in the center section or was that pre ABS?

Great work. Really enjoy watching and learning. I do have a question about relocating the torque bar mount. Any thought about just extending the torque bar and leaving the mount where it was? Are you going to have to modify the driveshaft loop now with it being further back? It might interfere with driveshaft travel since it's further back from the u-joint.
@SteveMirabelli8 күн бұрын
I am not sure what effect lengthening the torque bar might have. It may loose some of its effect being longer and more subject to twisting. The driveshaft loop may have to be re positioned or cut off completely depending on the shaft clearance as you suggested.

I am in an odd place with this build. As a Dodge guy, the Camaros/ElCaminos are not an overall interesting platform for me. Yet congratulations to you on keeping it interesting for how you detail the processes. Still a video series I look forward to seeing. Thank you.
@SteveMirabelli8 күн бұрын
Well this was originally going to be on an LX platform and skinned with 68 Charger sheetmetal but there were too many obstacles to overcome. I had built a model of it with Gen 2 charger sheetmetal which I really liked. I had posted it to my facebook page and did not get much positive feedback. Either way it would not work for what I wanted to do.
@phoenixblack122011 күн бұрын
Absolutely phenomenal work, Steve. I always found it funny how if you took the hatch off a 4th Gen., it sort of looked el Camino-esque. This is going to be an awesome vehicle and very dependable!

Thanks. I have seen that done by the way and it looks super cool. It was a stretched 94 which looks much better in my opinion than the catfish cars.

I haven't heard a peep since it left my shop. The painter said he would need to work on it for at least 4 to five months. Then the upholstery shop which will be taking care of re covering the seats were booked out about 10 months.

I have been enjoying watching your body swaps but I’m not understanding the point of this one. I guess I wonder why you couldn’t have just upgraded the suspension in the El Camino with disc brakes etc and installed a modern LS engine or something. What is the advantage of doing this?
@SteveMirabelli11 күн бұрын
Either way there would be a bunch of fabrication to do to fit the engine and trans. If I just swapped the motor I would have to get all the stand alone electronics to run it and blend it all in with the old El Camino harness. I would have had to restore the old HVAC system. Custom make lines to run it all and so on and so on. The list of tasks are endless. Once this chassis is swapped the drive train minus the drive shaft will all just bolt back in as will all the controls and heat/ ac ect. Being oem stuff working on this car mechanically in the future will be the same as working on any F body from the 90's. No custom mounts or fishy hybrid stuff under the hood.

Hey those guys are having fun grippin and rippin but if you do that on a regular basis you will have a yard full of junk that nobody will buy off you when you are done having fun. Very tedious but exacting work, Steve! Just an fyi for you as I am sure you will end up doing this again on another vehicle. The 4th generation F body cars were all born as T-top cars believe it or not. The only difference is, there are side pillars welded in and a slight variation in the top layer of sheet metal that lacks the mounting holes for the t top latching hardware. And of course, the hardtop cars have a one piece fiberglass cap, whereas the t top cars have a narrow b pillar cap. The floor and side bracing is all the same. I mention this because if you do this again and you get a sweet deal on t top car, get it. Also, it was very uncommon for the t tops to leak on those cars so rust like in the 3rd gens would be less likely. I’m not saying they were immune from leaking, but they were less likely because of the way that car was engineered. To me, the 4th gen is the best engineered Camaro as it basically looks like an Indy race car with its near mid mounted drivetrain. Excellent work as always my friend. Also, it was me that suggested the C4 ZR-1 wheels😊
@SteveMirabelli25 күн бұрын
Thanks for the information and the only thing that may be an issue with the wheels is the fronts may realize some turn radius interference because I bought 9.5 x 17 all the way around. We shall see.

With the rear shocks, can you use a different shock with a bushing or spherical bearing up top ( like a stock car) That would get you more clearance and mount the shock from under the floor? QA1 should have something? Glad to see you back with another project... I was getting bored 😂 😂

I can relate to your research fatigue with the wheels, Steve. I had the same experience with my '07 Tahoe. Just too many choices can overload the brain.

My big problem is I want the wheel physically in front of me with a tire mounted so I can be sure it will work. That is just not possible and yes there are way too many options.
