Brilliant video and was instrumental in me getting our generator set-up. I have a few notes for people who want to auto start a generator that is supplied with an ATS designed to start the gen when there's a power cut but want to use it on the inverter. I assume these are pretty common similar across the world. We're in Kenya.. - Wire the gen signal from the inverter across the manual/auto switch on your ATS - This will mean when gen signal is on it will close the dry relay and switch your ATS to auto, as you have no loads connected it will start gen - When signal goes off gen will shutdown as ATS will see it as now back in manual mode - Gen force needs to be off as this is needed for manual start but for auto just keeps the relay closed - Gen signal and gen charge on + starting % in battery settings - System work mode - Gen charge for the times you want to charge and the % on the right will be where the gen shuts down This should trigger the generator to turn on when the % goes too low. From testing if there's a grid supply it won't start the generator so should only start if battery is low and there's no grid power coming in. 🙂

That is correct, it won't start the generator if there is grid as the inverter can't sync to the generator freq. and the grid freq. at the same time.

Hi @brentthompson7233, Unfortunately I have absolutely no experience with Solar Assistant. My understanding is that it gets the data to Home Assistant using the MQTT broker. You will need to convert the MQTT data to sensors in Home assistant and you will then be able to use the Solarman Card. www.home-assistant.io/integrations/sensor.mqtt/

@SolarIntegrations

Hi @rashaadalli1529 , unfortunately there are no integrations that can speak to the Sunsynk Dongle directly, they all have to go via the Sunsynk cloud server. The best option is to just purchase a USB-RS485 adapter (pretty cheap) and connect directly to the inverter. This has the advantage of having a much faster refresh than the Sunsynk cloud (once every +-15 seconds vs once every 3 min) and you not having to have internet access for it to work (and the SUnsynk cloud is not the most reliable at the moment).

For example, if you have 4000W installed on the east side and 5000W on the west side, different forecasts will be displayed. In my case, i included 4 Strings which lead to 2 inverters.
@SolarIntegrations
@SolarIntegrations 3 ай бұрын
Hi Frank If you are looking for something reasonably accurate, the Solcast integration is better as it supports multiple strings so you can capture your East/West strings and will get individual production forcasts for each string. Each Solcast account is limited to 1 inverter with 2 strings but you can get data from two accounts using the integration so you could set your system up that way if you want. Works much better than the HomeAssistant integrated forecaster.

Would I be correct in thinking it's pulling this information from SunSynk cloud? There isnt a way to pull the data from the datalogger directly? Sunsynk cloud have been a little ropey today and I would like to get realtime data rather than 60 second delayed from Sunsynk cloud

No option to pull directly from the dongle on the Sunsynk Dongle (unless that has changed since I made this video, maybe double check on the Powerforum), I agree the cloud can be problematic.

@@SolarIntegrationslooks like solarman data logger allows direct pull though right?
@SolarIntegrations
@SolarIntegrations 3 ай бұрын
Hi @@mdeakin You can query the Solarman dongle directly and don't go via the cloud. The best integration to use for this is the KellerZA integration and not this one. You are also slightly limited on the refresh frequency with the dongle as it is uploading the data to the cloud as well and can get overloaded if you try and get updates from the dongle too frequently.

I ran into problems with the flash on my ESP32dev board. There was not enough storage in app0 to storing the compiled application, 108% of the roughly 2MB. app0 and app1 are the same size, to upload images OTA and marking the new app partition as active. I created a custom_partition.csv file with the following contents: # Name, Type, SubType, Offset, Size, Flags nvs, data, nvs, 0x009000, 0x005000, otadata, data, ota, 0x00e000, 0x002000, app0, app, ota_0, 0x010000, 0x380000, eeprom, data, 0x99, 0x390000, 0x001000, spiffs, data, spiffs, 0x391000, 0x00F000 This removed app1, doubled app0 thus making only USB flashing possible. this file is stored in the same location as your configuration yaml file. in the yaml file, the following is added: esphome: platformio_options: board_build.partitions: "/config/esphome/custom_partition.csv" So far, it looks good. There is a risk of bricking the esp32, but I took the chance. Maybe this helps someone else : )

Thank you for the video. It's easy enough to follow, but then it finishes without explaining how to bring it all together? Where do we run the YAML code (sorry, still a newbie to HA), how do we setup the Mushroom Cards, etc. At this point, I only have the basic LoadShedding card added to my default dashboard, which is plain and boring. How do we find out more? I'm trying to create a dashboard and add the Mushroom card, but it's not found... although it is in my HACS Frontend.

Hi @NeilJackson004 , you can check out the github page from the integration for some ideas on card code there are quite a lot of ideas there.

If you have a time trigger it will turn the geyser on even if there is load shedding

Thank for the great video John. We are wanting to connect a 10KVA Diesel Generator to a Sunsynk 16Kw Inverter. The Generator we are looking at will produce 35A at Max, so was hoping that we would be able to pull 30A from the Generator to charge the batteries during cloudy days etc. The generator is supplied with an ATS, but since this is not going to be sensing a loss of power from he eskom side, how exactly does the inverter trigger the generator to start, and then once it has charged sufficiently to turn off the generator?
@liveskippers
@liveskippers 4 күн бұрын
I can answer this one as I've just figured it out :-) Your ATS probably has a manual/auto switch. So with nothing connected when you press the button from manual to auto it will start the generator. So you do the same thing from the inverter. You take the dry contact for gen signal and wire that across the switch. When the signal is on it will close the switch and go to auto on your ATS and then when off will be back to manual and will shut the gen down. To make it work you need to turn off gen force as this make the gen signal on all the time which you need for manual start but not auto. You also in system work mode need to set the times you want to charge from gen with the check boxes. Whatever the % in system work mode is the amount it will charge to before it shuts off, will then restart on the % set in battery settings on the gen column on the left. Hope that helps.

Just pair it to the Smart Life app rather than using the CBI APP, that way you can add other TUYA devices with no issue.

Hi @andreharty2824 , Unfortunately I have never tried it out with that inverter. What errors are you getting? Do you have the Modbus register for the inverter? It will probably be similar to the DEYE/Sunsynk register but there will probably be some changes to that specific inverter. Are you using a RS475 Board or do you have the shield? Setting up the shield is a lot easier as there is no soldering which always seems to be problematic. Good luck, let me know how it goes.

Hi @JohannY3 There is no Solar Assistant integration into Home Assistant that I am aware off (could be wrong, let me know if I am). As far as I am aware you can however get data from Solar Assistant into Home Assistant using MQTT am not sure whether you would be able to write settings back to the inverter from HA, do you know? I generally try to keep things as simple as possible and adding Solar Assistant into the mix would just seem to be making things more complicated than they have to be. Am not sure if there is any advantage to having the Solar Assistant sitting in between the inverter and Home Assistant, when Home Assistant can just speak to the inverter directly that just seems to be the easier/simpler option

@@SolarIntegrations Hi, that's correct Solar Assistant (SA) uses MQTT, but it can also change settings although I haven't needed it until now. I chose it because it does not require a wire to run from my inverter to the HA computer. I tried a different HA addon back then but after spending a lot of time on it it didn't work and since time is also valuable I went the SA route. It works very well for me.

Hi thank you for the helpfull video . My q is i connnect the generator on grid input port but it dose not work it appeare as off grid after start loading for a few seconds ..and when i connect it to the generator input it worked well ? For ypur information I have changed the limmits of frequancey.. Is the nominal ramp time the issue?
@SolarIntegrations
@SolarIntegrations 5 ай бұрын
Hi @karemalgelani9559 , the RPM the generator is running at affects the frequency of the AC power it is sending to the generator. Most generators are set for 50hz when under no load, ideally you want the frequency the generator is supplying power at to be 50hz when it is under about 75% load. If your inverter is dropping the generator connection, it is probably because the RPM (supplied AC frequency) is dropping below the permitted frequency in the inverter settings when load is applied to the generator. My suggestion is to try increasing the RPM your generator is running at to the top end of the permitted frequency range (probably around 52hz but you will need to check) so that you have a bit more room for the generator RPM to drop before it is disconnected. Depending on the inverter you have, you should be able to see what the supplied frequency is on the inverter grid screen or you can check with a multimeter with a hz function. RPM is usually adjusted by a screw on the throttle linkage which you screw in to increase the RPM the generator runs at.
