Part of the story is that there was a need to get the German people working and this sort of product was ideal. It was safe, non controversial ( not war related) and as said there was a ready market with the well paid G.I.'s. The switcher doesn't look too much oversized and that paint does look like a factory finish. When it comes to repairs, identifying the problem will often lead to a solution. The cotton bud plastic sticks have found many uses on my railway. Some nice running from the Mikado today. Cheers, David.

@trainsontuesday The cotton budget sticks are a ready-made solution to any number of problems David. I was more than pleased with this fix though. Valve gear can be a right pain when it goes sloppy. They did a nice job on the Mikado, the motor is incredibly powerful, well geared and no slippage. Steven.

@carlgauntletttrains3026 It was going to a lucky dip, Carl. The photos on Marketplace didn't do the models any justice. The seller only lived 15 minutes from me, so I just drove over and handed him my money. Didn't even quibble on the price. I've still got some other stuff to show. I will do a vid soon. I am now thinking the paint job is original. It's too good to be a respray. It's done in enamel and has been applied just like a factory would have done it. Steven.

Hi Steven, some interesting facts about these Fleischmann Locos and how you managed to repair the connecting rods. Whoever painted the red awitcher did a great job, as you said it could be a factory finish. The Mikado is a fine looking and running Steamer, it pulled the heavy tinplate coaches with ease. Cheers, Paul.👍👍🙏

@paulvozman842 Hi Paul, I like discovering the history of these companies. You forget how Germany was divided for so long and was home to so many US soldiers who had to be catered for. It makes sense that they had children who wanted toys with an American flavour. I'm now convinced the paint job is factory, it is finely applied and there are no tell-tale blemishes that most of us make. I hope somebody out there may know either way. The Mikado, although primitive looking, runs very well for its age. It dates back to 1960, it has lasted quite well. Steven.

Finding parts for the 1367 will be a hard job, especially since the complete motor unit is missing, which together with the bogies is the part that most often gets lost. The motor is technically the same as the 1340, but with a way longer chassis and a different magnet setup. Your catalog is way too recent to include the metal body version of the US market locomotives

Hi Steven, I think Paul has said it all on this one but I must add that I do love the Crab. These locos were introduced in 1926, a Hughes LMS design built under Fowlers direction. They were rated as 5MT (mixed traffic) which is quite powerful for a small loco. Of the 104 still in service in 1962 I only saw one of them, No. 42789. I would love to have one of those Lima versions in my collection. Cheers, David.

@trainsontuesday I didn't own one before this arrived David. I initially thought it was a Hornby until I saw the Lima brand. I was even more surprised when it worked. I have seen quite a few Hornby versions on the tube, and they look great, but i never got around to buying one. This one will do fine. The switcher was what I was after though, it's way out of scale but Flieschmann were like that in the early days. Steven.

Hi Steven, Your latest purchases are very nice indeed, the Lima Crab runs extremely well and looks great for its age. The mixed freight wagons it pulled were superb especially the hand made open wagons. The Flieschmann switcher is only a few years younger than me and is in great condition although not in its origional livery someone did a good job on the repaint and detailing. The tinplate Coaches are a another great purchase they are in good condition overall and the lettering is still good. Thanks for sharing these amazing old Locos and rolling stock. Cheers, Paul.👍👍🙏

The crab runs really well, i think I can tidy it up a bit. The motor runs quite well too, it might quieten down a bit more once I service it. Your Mikado runs very well and not too noisy considering the drive system, it was very smooth at lower speeds. Hi Steven, that's a nice 140c you've got! And you have a nice collection of Jouef stream locos, including an 040TA tank engine. Your 140c has the older 3-pole motor, you can reduce some of the growling by adding a micro drop of a 50/50 mix of swing machine oil and grease (I use technical petroleum jelly) to the motor bearings using a needle. How caked up was the drive mechanism on yours?
@stevenpeaketrainsandstuff3682

@@patricksmodels Hi Patrick, the mechanism and contacts were filthy. I ended up pulling it all apart and gave them a bath in methylated spirits. It was a Fiddly job but there was so much old grease on the axles they were a bit stiff to turn. The motor is in good condition, I did put lithium grease on the motor bearings and it ran quiet for a little while. Unfortunately the rattle has returned. I'll give it a little bit more to see if it helps. I've got quite a few diesels as well, they all run very well considering the old style chunky gears.

@@stevenpeaketrainsandstuff3682 mine was in the same state, lots of old gunked up grease. Somebody had fiddled with it and one of the clips that connect the valve gear to the running plate was disconnected. The drive belt was shot, so I bought a pair of new silicone ones on eBay, I had posted you the name of the seller in a previous comment. Mine is slightly newer with burnished linkage and the silent 5-pole motor. The 3-pole ones always make that grinding noise. I've got two 040TA tank engines, the closed cab version has the noisy 3-pole and gear drive, while the open cab one has the 5-pole and belt drive.

@paulvozman842 Hi Paul, You either love or hate Jouef. The setups are easily the most frustrating to maintain. But if you put the effort in, they are quality to own and run. The electric 0 4 0 was a real challenge to get running, it is a very crude mechanism and the motors can struggle to run. The older trains are nice things to have, they have character. These rail buses are very nice. I had considered buying a set, but I was put off by the price, so I opted to build my own using a Lima 2 axle diesel shunter chassis. I've got a couple of Fleischmanns, a baggage car/brake and a 2 axle coach, both with internal lights and diecast chassis.

@patricksmodels Hi Patrick, I have a soft spot for the rail buses and early diesel powered multiple units. Qld Rail used to run 2 and 3 car sets when I was young. They looked like Budd cars, but were a bit smaller. We called them silver bullets, but they were as slow as a wet week. I hope you give your Lima build a run, I would like to see it. Steven.

@@stevenpeaketrainsandstuff3682 I've just made a few posts on my scratch built railbus and railcar tagging you. I've also got a soft spot for these diesel trains. I've travelled on Romanian CFR Class 77 Malaxa railbuses and on the Italian private railway OM railcars (and on the Aln 668s) between Udine and Cividale del Friuli when I was in the Italian army in 1997/98.

Hi Steven, that's a lovely model, really quiet & smooth for a lifelike, what a beauty. You have some cracking rolling stock too. It's nice too see some American stuff running. Really great video. All the best butty. Carl.

@carlgauntletttrains3026 Hi Carl, it was a such a good buy, it might be one of the best locos I have purchased in that price range. I would certainly buy another. Thanks mate. Steven.

Hi Steven. That loco is a beauty. The 0-4-0's, 0-6-0's and 0-8-0's were mainly built as yard switchers rarely venturing out onto the main lines. The Union Pacific box car is a 40' Hi-cube car (not seen in real life anymore) and I know that the models were available in the 1970's. cheers, David.

@trainsontuesday Hi David, this loco is pretty good, I'm amazed how well Lifelike did with the detail. I know it's plastic, but is really well done. I am going to try and hunt down some more of those Hi-cube cars, they will look great behind my UP GP7. Steven.

Hi Steven, what an amazing model, I have never seen these Proto 0-8-0 Locos before. Great detail and a very smooth quiet runner, that pulled 18 wagons easily. A very nice rake of mixed wagons, loved the box cars. Cheers, Paul.👍👍🙏

@paulvozman842 Hi Paul, it was a bit of good luck that I found it. Couldn't be happier with its performance, it doesn't have tyres on it either. That Bachman boxcar really caught my eye when I saw it. I'm not sure of when it was produced, but they did a good job on the shell. Cheers mate. Steven.

Hi Steven, You made a great job on the livery of the Triang Hiawatha I think the Green color is perfect and its a great runner as shown in a previous video. The big surprise is the Lima C38, its a superb looking model and looks in great condition. The green livery is also perfect for this Loco not too bright or dark. It runs very smoothly, what motor does it have?. Its amazing what Triang and Lima produced for the Canadian and Australian markets, I would have never seen these if you hadnt shown them on your channel. Another wonderful Steam Loco for your collection. Cheers, Paul.👍👍🙏

@paulvozman842 Thanks Paul. I don't have much in the way of Australian steam, it is astronomical in price. So I was happy to land this Lima, on Marketplace of all places. It has an original loco drive Ringfield motor. Whoever owned it never used it much. All I did was service it and lubed the axles. Don't get me wrong, the Triang is still a favourite, it pulls way more than the Lima ever will. I should buy the decals and finish it off. Hopefully my next acquisition will be a Qld Rail BB18 1/4 (4 6 2) or a C17 (4 8 0). They are not easy to find as they are usually scratch built. They are both great looking locomotives.

I like what you did with the Tri-ang TC 4-6-0. It was quite a bit off for any Canadian prototype too. I bought my first one of those in England when I was about 14. Still have it in its original box. I know nothing of the C38 so all I can say is it looks pretty good to me. Cheers, David.

@trainsontuesday Hi David, I've got a few of the Triang versions. I quite like them, there are a few versions made for the Canadian Market, they have yellow numbering etc. Might be getting rare these days. The C38s survive into preservation in New South Wales, they still go on heritage runs around the place. They were a decent passenger loco for the distances they covered. Hope all is going well mate. Steven.

Hi Paul, glad you liked the result, but it ended up being quite different from what we initially discussed. The problem with this body shell is it was a plasticky toy looking thing to begin with. Maybe i should have just painted it blue and then dusted it, as the dust sticks so much better to painted surfaces. I've tested hairspray and it also disolves the powders. it is very cold down here at the moment so i might wait till it warms up so that the particles dry as they meet the surface. Some of my favourite photographs of weathered steamers come from the Barry scrapyard. What a playground you got to play in, a kids dream come true. It was really fortunate that so many got preserved, after all, they were invented in the UK, it stands to reason the history of locomotion should be protected. Steven.

I don't know why but when these diesels were left to rot they removed the rods. I think you should do the same and weather the wheels heavily. Take the couplers off and bury the loco deep in a back track with weeds and other junk all around it. That way you wouldn't have to touch it and it could continue to "weather" naturally. I was never a fan of the 08 in blue so this seem very appropriate. David.

Hi David, I was thinking about making a diorama and just make it a shelf queen. I'm not sure I could replicate what I managed to do on this occasion, so I am thinking I will leave it be. It was a mistake not to use proper weathering powders, as they seem to hold up a lot better. But on the other side of the coin, I wanted to be able to easily remove the powders if I didn't like the end result. I am hoping that the chalks might naturally adhere over time, I'll just have to be careful handling it. Steven.

Hi Steven, you have made a great job of weathering the 08 shunter, the corrosion and staining is excellent. I could suggest you use Hair Spray from a distance of a few feet away and lightly cover the Loco, this might save all the work you have done. You might try a to do a test with it on some plastic parts with the chalk weathering and see if it successful. Thanks so much for the shoutout its really appreciated, its good to see other like minded modellers work and hear their opinions. You mentioned Barry Scrap Yard, that was in my home town and as you said it was mostly steamers there. The levels of decay on these Steamers varied considerably as many were laid up from the late 60s to the early 80s. I used to crawl all over them in the late 60s and be sad they were going for scrap. luckily Dai Woodham was prepared to sell them at the same price he paid for them, Great for the preservation groups and the modellers. Thanks again for the mention its very kind of you. All the best, Paul.👍👍🙏
