I am sorry, but the Strongs concordance and the GreekInterlinear online both confirm that the words used in that verse are lake and fire. brimstone is a purification agent. But God is going to save all men. 1 Timothy 4:9-11 KJVS This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. [10] For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe. [11] These things command and teach.

I think Davids makes more sense Young's Literal: "but whoever may speak evil in regard to the Holy Spirit hath not forgiveness -- to the age, but is in danger of age-during judgment" Concordant Literal: "yet whoever should be blaspheming against the holy spirit is having no pardon for the eon, but is liable to the eonian penalty for the sin" David Bentley Hart has: "But whoever blasphemes against the Spirit, the Holy one, has no excuse throughout the age, but is answerable for a transgression in the Age."

Yes, Dr. Hart's translations appears to be more to the thought of the passage in English. Nice. The way I understand this passage is simply no matter when you do this you will, as Hart says, answer for this sin. Here, there, or anywhere.

There is no historical evidence of any pagan feast at that time of year, if they had feasts at all in the dead of Winter. A belief that was widespread in Judaism at the time of Christ is that a prophet dies on the day they were conceived. Christ died at the end of March, hence add nine months and you arrive at Dec. 25. It was always that date from the beginning for that reason.

Matthew 26:46 in the original Greek "And these will go away into eternal punishement, but the righteous into eternal life." Revelations 20:15 also in the origianl Greek says: "Anyone whose name was not found written in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire." (People are judged by what they did in life. Not by works, but by their heart.) Jesus saves everyone from the jaws of death if they choose to have faith in Him. And lot of people don't so they will have to face an eternal consequence. Why would God do this? Because God doesn’t want evil to dwell among his righteous children. He cares for our well-being. Its the same with Adam in the garden. He died spiritually because Adam chose to disobey God. God saw this as evil and push them out of the garden. I think there is misinterpretation going on here. You also have to read the full chapter and not cherry pick what sounds good.

Was there a verse that says all will confess that Jesus Christ is the one and only true Lord? Maybe they all won't at first but will once they come back from the refiner's crucible. And that is what would seem to me like in being held back in school because of failing the class. I do believe that he would not torment us endlessly. We just need a scolding for the wrong things we did and taught how they offended Jesus and to be cleansed of them so that we may all eventually go up to Heaven.

You accidentally left out the crucial part of the Greek text of the phrase in Mark 3:29. It’s οὐκ ἔχει ἄφεσιν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, not just οὐκ ἔχει ἄφεσιν. A negated εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα is where “never” comes from - compare 1 Corinthians 8:13, etc.
@thetotalvictoryofchrist9838
@thetotalvictoryofchrist9838 4 күн бұрын
In 1 Cor. 8:13 we have "οὐ μὴ φάγω" a double negation, no, not, which is simply strong emphasis. You could translate it as "never" but it more literally means ""I will certainly not eat". Paul is speaking of specific circumstances when he absolutely wouldn't do this. But that strong emphasis, double negation, doesn't exist in Mark 3:29 they are using the translation "never" as an excuse to not translate "to the age", which specifically denotes finite duration. So they are translating a doctrine into the text.
@neuroendocrinologist
@neuroendocrinologist 4 күн бұрын
@@thetotalvictoryofchrist9838 That's an absurd claim - that they're "using 'never' as an excuse to not translate 'to the age.'" First off, αἰών only denotes "age" in very specific circumstances. A negated adverbial accusative (εἰς) τὸν αἰῶνα itself is simply idiomatic for "never." That's why they're translating "never." And I cited 1 Corinthians 8:13 not for anything to do with οὐ μὴ φάγω; but again, for its use of a negated εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. Paul is saying he will never eat meat if it scandalizes a Christian brother. There are numerous other instances where a negated (εἰς) τὸν αἰῶνα clearly denotes "never"; and similarly for its Hebrew precursor and equivalent, לעולם. In fact, לעולם לא *still* means "never" in modern Hebrew.
@neuroendocrinologist
@neuroendocrinologist 4 күн бұрын
@@thetotalvictoryofchrist9838 I'm not sure if my reply got eaten or not, so I'm retyping it. It's absurd to suggest that translators are rendering "never" in order to avoid translating εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. They're translating "never" *because of* εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα - because, when negated, this is idiomatic for "never." αἰών has nothing to do with "age" in this instance. And I have no idea why you're focusing on οὐ μὴ φάγω in 1 Corinthians 8:13. Again, it's the negated εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα in that verse which gives the sense of "never." The same applies to negations of the precursor and equivalent phrase in Hebrew, לעולם. In fact, even still today in modern Hebrew, you say "never" with לעולם לא. You also refer to a backwards-looking "never" (in the past) by מעולם לא - where, again, it'd be absurd to suggest that this has anything to do with an "age."

I heard a preacher say a long time ago, that this verse was spoken under the old covenant. So Jesus was referring to not being forgiven under the law of Moses in the current age or age to come using the blood of bulls and goats. Yet under his own blood, it would be possible. With man it would be impossible but not with God 😉

@Breakdowns04 Unforgiveness is the unforgivable sin. In Matthew 12:30, the verse that precedes the verses about the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, Jesus says, “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” So what does that mean? Well, isn’t the good news the grace of God? Pure forgiveness. And we are to be like our Father in Heaven. Jesus stated in Matthew 6:15 that unforgiveness is unforgivable by the Father. And yet, because of the active grace of Christ in us all each person will (eventually) forgive their enemies. If we aren’t with Christ then we are not extending forgiveness and grace to others. (see also Ephesians 4:32) In Matthew 12 Jesus is bringing attention to the unforgiving and accusatory hearts of the Pharisees. The opposite of condemnation is forgiveness.

It's not literal in a more basic sense...nobody in fire is going to eloquently ask for someone to touch their tongue with a drop of water, that doesn't make any sense. That's just figurative and poetic language for a hint of mercy and whats more is that it depicts punishment but it makes no mention of duration, so even if it represents an experience of hell it presents nothing in the way of time spent there.

To be forgiven only means to not be punished, God's punishments are for correction. Comparing these verses shows how "Aionios" and "Aionion to Come" are synymous ideas. But I reject the theory that Matthew was based on Mark in any way, I agree with the Ancient Traditions that Matthew came first and was originally written in Hebrew, Matthew who no doubt knew shorthand as a tax collector was able to document was Jesus said verbatim. Jesus no doubt repeated himself a lot and so Mark's may be worded slightly differently because he's quoting a different time Jesus said the same idea.

It's true tradition held Matthew up to be the first Gospel, and maybe that's true. But most scholars today, even conservative scholars, are convinced Mark was written first, for various reasons. Matthew and Luke appear to be leaning on Mark for their outline, and they clarify things that were somewhat obscure in Mark, such as the two passages I used in this presentation. I suppose we could argue Mark was trying to write a short summary of Matthew, which would have some utility since everything needed to be copied by hand. But either way the point of this presentation is the same.

When the Bible says the last enemy to be defeated is death, could it be seen as "there will no longer be death from this point on" or could it be understood that death being defeated means there can be no lasting effect of death, because if there is anyone that remains dead forever, doesn't it in some way mean death itself is forever? The doctrine of apocatastasis was condemned as heresy at the Second Council of Constantinople in AD 553. Apocatastasis was also opposed by Augustine, Jerome, and Luther, and it has never been widely taught within most Christian traditions. Arguing against apocatastasis are passages such as John 3:16-18 and 1 John 5:12, which explicitly define the difference between those who “have life” and those who are condemned. John 3:36 makes it clear that “whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.” In Matthew 25:46, Jesus points to two distinct eternal destinies. God’s wrath remains where disobedience remains (Romans 1:18; 2:5; Colossians 3:6; Ephesians 5:6), and, according to Hebrews 9:27, there are no second chances after death. The punishment of the wicked in hell is described throughout Scripture as “eternal fire” (Matthew 25:41), “unquenchable fire” (Matthew 3:12), “shame and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12:2), a place where “the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:44-49), a place of “torment” and “fire” (Luke 16:23-24), “everlasting destruction” (2 Thessalonians 1:9), a place where “the smoke of torment rises forever and ever” (Revelation 14:10-11), and a “lake of burning sulfur” where the wicked are “tormented day and night forever and ever” (Revelation 20:10). It’s hard to escape the implication that the torment of hell lasts forever.

The drop in the ocean saying comes from Buddhism, perhaps it's a valid metaphor but it's not Christianity. Jesus' saying regarding the wide and narrow gate is actually a word picture of the New Jerusalem, the gateway into the kingdom of God. It's not a matter of if you will enter the kingdom, but how? Jesus told the religious leaders that tax collectors and prostitutes will enter the kingdom before they do. But Jesus is still affirming they will eventually enter the kingdom, via the wide gate of their own destruction. These are very serious warnings from Jesus, but he is not teaching endless punishment, rather he uses metaphors of corrective discipline.

Imagine a God who is utterly loving, kind, and merciful. A God who desires the redemption and reconciliation of all people, regardless of their beliefs, actions, or background. This is the God revealed in Jesus Christ, who taught us to love our neighbors as ourselves and to pray for our enemies. Christian Universalism affirms that God's love is greater than our mistakes, our sins, and our limitations. It asserts that God's grace is more powerful than our failures and that God's mercy is more abundant than our shortcomings. Consider the parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). The father's love and acceptance are not conditional upon the son's worthiness or behavior. The father runs to meet the son, embracing him without judgment or expectation of repayment. This is the heart of God - a love that pursues us, welcomes us, and celebrates our return. Universalism is not about dismissing personal responsibility or the consequences of our actions. Rather, it's about recognizing that our ultimate destiny is not determined by our imperfections but by God's boundless love and grace. Think about the early Church Fathers like Origen and Gregory of Nyssa, who believed in Universalism. They saw it as a natural extension of Jesus' teachings on love and redemption. Christian Universalism offers a hopeful and inclusive vision of God's love, where everyone is cherished, valued, and reconciled. It's a perspective that can transform our lives, our communities, and our world.

The doctrine of Universal Restoration, Apokatastasis in Greek, is the belief that all of creation is restored by Christ over the course of the ages, which would include Satan. Although not all of those church fathers went that far. And in the original Greek Jesus didn't say people will "never" be forgiven for blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. That's a doctrinal imposition in translation. He said they will "not" be forgiven, in this age, or the age to come. Which is to say, if you do this here, there, or anywhere, you will be punished. This after explaining that all sins and blasphemy will be forgiven in the age to come. But nothing about that indicates punishment is endless. Jesus gave that warning to the religious leaders who just witnessed miracles from Jesus and attributed them to Satan, demonstrating and extreme level of obstinacy. I suspect it is that obstinacy that requires serious discipline.
