The Thomas Jane 04 Punisher, Frank was still a solider. When his neighbors see him on TV its a picture of him in dress blues.

That fact that he was previously a soldier only serves to explain his skillset. It is just there to say, hey, this is why this cop fights like a marine. His being a soldier doesn't have the thematic relevance that it did in the comics. His family is murdered because of his FBI activity. This turns him into a disgrunted ex-cop looking for revenge which is so far removed from what the punisher is I'm actually surprised I don't resent this movie more. Frank's ideology is born out wartime morality. Kill the enemy before they can kill you or yours. That is why he does things the way he does, he sees the crime ridden streets as just another warzone. In The Thomas Jane movie, as I said, it's just a cop going after a gangster, gets too close, gangster wants to eliminate/send a message, badass cop goes for revenge. It misses the psychology of Frank so badly. Not to mention how deceptively unique he is. I've received this comment a few times and I understand why because maybe I didn't make myself clear enough when I said he was a police officer in the movie and then went on a rant about how important him being a soldier is. But point stands 😁

For me it just comes down to Garth Ennis has way too much fun writing racist material in a lot of his work. There are a lot of moments in punisher max for example, where the writing and the art dress minorities as caricatures and not people. I like Ennis' work when he's somewhat kept on a leash, but he becomes erratic when he's left to his own devices. Can't wait to see the full vid!!!

I LOVE the Punisher, and I think Ennis Max run is the perfect compass to help you understand him. Just as Cap is the son of a righteous war, won (among others) by U.S., he is the bastard son of a bad war U.S. lost. He embodies those contraddictions, frustrations, moral superiority complex. In the end, he is a warhead with a thrill to kill, a very selective serial killer, much like a Dexter, with way more equipment and training, and way less inner moral honesty. Of course, that's not how he was conceived and created in the first time, nor how he has been perceived until Ennis work.

I like the comics and the show a lot. The show is a lot of fun and has a lot of the satire, but it lacks Ennis RUTHLESSNESS. Ennis writes everything so nihilistically but also so cartoonishly over the top that you rarely feel bogged down in the hellscapes he is creating. Meanwhile the show treats it all so straightforward that it can sometimes feel depressingly real. Its two sides of the same coin almost but one has more fun with the concept to dilute the horror. The comics also show not every hero is awful with that one team that GENUINELY want to do good but just arent that good at it and are not just corpo shills.

That will be something I'll be touching on in my next boys video but I feel like one of Ennis' points in making all the heroes (and most of the boys) is that you cannot have power and be good. That is what I think the Innocents arc was about. They are supers but have no real power. Yet they are innocent, they are good.

I love Tower of Babel. Batman would absolutely have a plan to incapacitate everyone he knows just in case. None of the plans were made to kill, just incapacitate and he hoped they would never would need to be used. Batman has to always have a plan, always think ahead, because he is just a man. With no plan he could not stop the JLA on his own if they got possessed by Starro or something

I think that is the appeal of the idea being all the plans. However, I believe tower of babel preaches the exact opposite message than most people take from it. Yes, Bruce is prepared to take his friends down if needs be but it is exactly that mindset that not only puts the world in danger but allows Ra's Al Ghul to distract him. And it also gets the rest of his family in the sh*t with the superhero community.

See I love the idea of Frank always being the Punisher but I prefer the takes where he was able to turn it off, have a normal life and job and find the peace of that. That his family gave him purpose beyond killing. When that purpose is taken away that last vestige of hope dies and all he has left is his war but now it is a war against crime, against the criminals who took his family and hope and humanity from him. However because he had that family he does not become the mindless killing machine psycho he could have been, he becomes a hero who will save an innocent by any means possible but has no mercy left in him for anyone he deems an enemy. Its why Punisher doesn't kill cops or heroes who try to stop him, he only kills those who take the peace he lost from others.

This movie made tear up at the end. Especially for nightwing I honestly didn’t watch the teen titans movies from dcau. I just watched teen titans from cartoon network as kid. I just replaced that robin for this nightwing. I know that starfire and nightwing will always be close. So seeing him at peace with deformed starfire left me with such a unique feeling. I felt melancholy, sad because this universe is beyond saving. Yet happy that nightwing was happy. Knowing that this universe will end and maybe we will see a brighter future for these characters was absolutely beautiful.

I don't think at ALL Harvey was EVER the Holiday killer until he killed Carmine Falcone. I think it was Gilda and Alberto, but Gilda, being clearly unwell, assumed her husband was taking over from her. But I don't think so. I think it was Alberto. And I think when Harvey said there were two Holiday killers he didn't know Gilda was one of them. He was referring to Alberto (who he assumed committed all the previous murders), and himself, who had just killed the Roman.

The Punisher is another example of a character Marvel created not fully understanding what exactly he was, or rather they might have and then decided that he should be something else. As an anti-hero the Punisher does not really fit into the Marvel universe, unless you make him way less effective than he was originally introduced. It’s “amazing” he began as a Spiderman villain. D.C. did a much better job with the similar Hitman character. Characters such as these don’t belong in a world with superheroes, as anything other than a one off, but if you insist on placing them in one, then they really should be trying at all costs to avoid them. Hope more people discover your channel, because you do a great job of character analysis.

Pleasure 😁. What I meant by solider was the mentality, skillset and in a literary sense, the soul. Like how soldier can be used as a descriptor not only for army personelle. For example, an underground resistence fighter or spy could be described as a soldier for the cause. Does that make sense? I knew Frank was a marine but for the point I was making soldier was the best adjective I could think of ... perhaps warrior is a better word that encompasses all combat minded characters but it's a bit of a dramatic word 😁

39:00 This Thunderbolts issue you're referencing, where Punisher resists Ghost Rider's penance stare, is a reflection of poor comic book writing. The writer who wrote that Thunderbolts issue didn't understand how Ghost Rider's penance stare worked, as it conflicts with decades of Ghost Rider lore. Penance stare takes every painful thing you've done to everyone you've ever encountered and then throws it back at you. If you inflicted physical, emotional, mental or spiritual pain on another human being, the penance stare will burn your soul. It has nothing to do with whether you regret it or not. The ONLY reason why Punisher resisted Ghost Rider's penance stare in the Thunderbolt issue that you referenced was because apparently, in an earlier comic, Punisher received an angel's blessing when Deadpool hovered an angel feather over his bloodied body. The Penance Stare doesn't work on people with divine protection. However, do keep in mind that when Ghost Rider used his penance stare on Frank in the Thunderbolts issue we're talking about, Frank's divine protection shielded him from THAT stare only. It was like a videogame buff - you buff yourself to shield yourself from a powerful attack from the enemy, and once the enemy uses their super move on you, the buff shields you from that attack only and then goes away. Simply put, you'd have to buff yourself again, so in this case, Frank would have to receive another angel's blessing. This is further evidenced by the fact that later on, Ghost Rider does use the penance stare on Punisher, and it DOES work -- we see Frank screaming in agony and pain and throwing up vehemently -- BUT it didn't kill him. The reason why the penance stare didn't kill Frank or make him go insane was because Frank feels the burden that comes with him inflicting pain onto others; and as you've noticed, that conflicts with your argument that Frank believes he's always right in what he does. Even then, I have issues with that too. The penance stare should be one of the ultimate-one-hit-kill moves ever in Marvel comics. It just felt like in the Thunderbolts issues I'm referencing they didn't want Frank to die. Maybe not write that as a plot point then? Maybe write something where Ghost Rider doesn't feel compelled to go after Frank because Frank is a force of vengeance himself ( a human one, is what I mean )? I don't know. Consistency should be key when writing stories, but for Marvel it seems like it's not.

Ennis is a decent writer, but he has a lot of flaws in his work. Most of the comics Ive read from him start really strong and drop the ball at the end or have a great arc but then delude into a nothing burger. I kinda agree with you to certain extent. The show was an "Improvement" only when it followed Ennis roadmap and reigned his over the top edginess, but they have also exclude some of the best stuff from the comic: Black Noir reveal has been changed for the worse and I doubt they will have Butcher's ending that was a tragic high point in he comic.
