Lines aren’t trivial indeed. But 2 months to create parallel lines?! Sounds a bit much. You need to subtract the offset on the X where both X and Y increase in relation to the previous line’s point. And you will need to add offset to C when X is decreasing and Y is increasing. So it is basically Pythagorean algebra distance = (A’ + B’ + C) / sqrt(A^2 * B^2) You know A and B and C and the distance you want the line to be. So it seems rather trivial to my understanding- but I sucked at math. So perhaps I’m overlooking something. But 2 months still sounds a lot.

A friend came round with this game - we loaded it onto my BBC micro. Jaw-dropping stuff. Even years later, I can still remember the feeling. I never made it to Elite but I had a lot of fun trying!

I'd only been working for a couple of years, but one of my early purchases was a BBC Bc Micro. I remember when Elite came out; it just jumped out at you from the shelf. I vought a copy during my lunch hour, and sneaked off to open it. It was enthralling. Folks today have no idea just how breathtaking the 3D wireframe graphics were - it was a huge leap over anything else. As was the gameplay, which by modern standards is very limitted, but at the time was incredibly immersive. I worke din a college, so we had rooms full of BBC B's. And pretty soon, those rooms were packed with peopel playing Elite! I got to Elite - it gave you a code you sent off. I still have the congratulatory letter from Acornsoft (though I did not qualify to enter into the competition they ran) and the enamel badge. Then I got a floppy dirve - from Watford Electronics I think - and got the disc cersin...and up came INCOMING MESSAGE - they'd managed to pack actual missions into the game as well! It was an amazing achievement.

I helped to build a network for BBC Micros in 1984. I was 16, and the installation was for secretarial training. At that time, I was a 1st year engineering apprentice in the training school, and knew more about computers than any of the computer trainers!

In this year 2024, I continue to watch "The Computer Chronicles," which is a favorite show, I have enjoyed the way Gary Kildall hosted it. Perhaps I never met the [gentleman], I truly regret that Gary Kildall died. All the fine people are gone! Now I appreciate your channel as the best. I am also a fan of the microcomputer, as well as a keyboard specialist and an avid typist who uses one almost all the time.

$800 was a cheap low-end computer? Even today that would be expensive. Then when you factor in $800 in 1985 is the equivalent of over $2,000 in our money. Imagine spending over 2 grand for a low-end computer. Wow.

Love his delivery! The clarity and pacing are superb. Only criticism is that he pronounces "wh" like an American (e.g. as in "white") by including the "h" sound 😂. On the other hand, maybe us Brits did that forty years ago, i can't remember!
