Brushy Bill Roberts In His Own Words: The Outlaw Years: Part 3 - In this episode, I continue immediately following the killing of Tom Folliard at Ft. Sumner. I will read directly from William Henry Roberts' tape recorded interviews with William V. Morrison. I will discuss Roberts' account of the killing of Charlie Bowdre, the Kid's capture at Stinking Springs and his trial at Mesilla. Additionally, I will compare Roberts statements with those presented in the book, The Saga of Billy the Kid by Walter Noble Burns to show that the new claim by neo-historians, that Roberts obtained his knowledge of Billy the Kid by memorizing the Burns book is completely unfounded and not based on facts.

My 2nd great grandmother was Odilia Maxwell. She was a younger sister to Paulita Maxwell. Odilia was around 10-11 years old when the supposed killing of Billy the kid was killed at Fort Sumner. Family folklore states it was not Billy the kid. Pat Garret was hiding under a bench in the hallway and shot a man with a double barrel shotgun. Garret was a coward and shot the wrong man.

Listening to Robert's account of his capture and trial was not only fascinating but confirmed a couple of thoughts I've had for some time. In regards to Deputy Olinger, in today's Law Enforcement world, his behavior would not have been tolerated for long. From his taunting of prisoners and his threats against them, it is clear he would have been ( most likely ) fired for cause and blacklisted from working in Law Enforcement in any jurisdiction. It is also clear that Pat Garrett was deathly afraid of the Kid, and that if they had been friends once, that was long gone by this point. I believe that Garrett lied about killing Billy the Kid and did what he had to do to cover it up and save himself. Garrett seems to come of as a hired [[ elected ]] killer who enjoyed shooting people [[ without confirming who they were before shooting ]] by acting as a bushwacker.

Brushy Bill without a doubt was Billy the Kid, everything matches up if you've read some of these books being referred of. And SHAME on the state of New Mexico for putting tourists dollars above making history right.

Im a Billy The Kid fanatic. Through the years I have read and seen enough evidence to convince me that Brushy Bill was in fact William H Bonney. Especially with him having all the war wounds and intel about certain events that nobody would know unless they were there. Thats just my opinion tho.

Great episode Brett, and I'm convinced somewhere, pictures exist of Brushys scars that Mr Morrison took, that match up with the ones Billy had. Firm believer Brushy was Billy, and someday maybe those pictures will surface. Thanks again Brett for all your great research. 😊👍❤️

Walter Burns may have written a book but it's full of alot of crap. I read it and others and I must say it has too many discrepancies

For those who say brushy Bill could of read all this information is simple wrong. Brushy was quite illiterate and could barely read or write. He gave information that even historians didn't know, but proven correct later

Interesting and informative. Excellent photography job enabling viewers to better understand what/whom the orator was describing. Class A research project!!! The kid was rail 🚆 roaded. Others were involved with the assassination of sheriff Bradey.

Brett, I really enjoy your narratives and research presented. You do an exceptional job. Thank you for your series on Brushy. I feel the same as you, it's amazing how mainstream historians refuse to accept anything that goes against their norm.

Hey Brett much thanks for your research and details of the events at that time in history , I'm begining to understand what was going on behind the seen as I have read Wallace's memoirs and he was frustrated by the ring and didn't have the power to save the kid , but since he tried to replace bristol with ira lenard , probably there was a deal made with Mrs mc sween because why was Garrett in white oaks when the kid escaped Lincoln really and then poe was there shortly before that July night in 1881 and later we find out he was in on the cover up , there was deal probably , Wallace was bewildered and frightened by the power of the ring . And yes was agitated by Billy's popularity but not enough to want him dead , Wallace was ex military and probably in some way or another admired the kids moxy especially for a kid with a baby face to have real guts and courage to go against the ring in which even Wallace had problems with they're power
