Paul Avino awesome! Mat burn can be quite painfully - especially that first shower...you feel every little water drop! Stick with it, stretch, don’t over exert yourself...you’ll be good! Come back and let me know how it’s going! Also, if you haven’t subscribed- it’s free and I’d truly appreciate the support! Thanks for commenting and watching!

Thanks this was super helpful for my first class. Except for when you said not to coach people, I rolled with someone who had been there for 9 months (white belt) and he was super helpful to me on my first day. There's plenty someone can pick up in a few months that can be passed on to those even newer than them.

@@midlifebjj Please consider rule 1. Never ever use what you know outside of the judo school. Run away, go away. Rule 2. Out on the street never underestimate your opponent. You might be up against a 5 ft 2 woman weighing 105 pounds with a 2nd degree black belt and end up flat on your back looking up at the stars.

Florida Two Wheel Adventures you’re welcome. I’m 44 myself and I’ve got to commend you on taking up this martial art as a LEO. I’ve watched some Gracie Breakdown videos that involved law enforcement wrestling larger guys to the ground and having an extremely difficult time. BJJ is something I would recommend to all LEO’s. I’m sure you’ve done the research. We actually have some LEO’s in our academy between the ages I 45 and 50....and they love it! Anyhow, good luck with your training, brother! Appreciate you stopping by and leaving a comment. If you haven’t subscribed to my channel, it’d mean a ton to me if you would. Trying to hit that 100 mark by the end of 2019! If. First class (beginner trial) was awesome!. I was made to feel at home right away and everybody was more than happy to assist. The coaches are phenomenal and explained every move in detail. I got to roll with a couple of partners (we had drills to practice) and even ended up with one of the coaches on the last drill. I loved it so much that I signed up and will attend my first official class as a member of Iron Grip In Durbanville Cape Town. Whopeeeeeee!

Great video. I've been training almost 8 years (1 stripe purple) and MOST higher belts will give you some slack on these things because we were new to at one point. Just to expand a little on a couple you talked about 1) Bow in going on the mat and bow out going off. I know this makes my professor FURIOUS if you don't do it. 2)Know who your rolling with, kids, females, older people that might be beat up (myself 😉) (and ask about injuries) and roll accordingly. 3) Keep your partners safe, when they tap LET GO. We had a NEWER 30 something year old not let go of a 16 year old AFTER he tapped 4x. Some schools (not ours and I think this is getting to be a thing of the past) find it disrespectful to ask a higher belt to roll, so make sure about that. LASTLY (and this drives me NUTS) don't lay down with your feet towards a professor when your professor is teaching a technique. I had a 4th degree Brazilian tell me it is disrespectful to show the bottoms of your feet while being taught a technique. Sorry about the long post. Good luck to all and stay safe.
@midlifebjj

@@midlifebjj Yes thanks for the input and i will keep checking the new videos :) any tips for neck soreness and mat burn? x)
@midlifebjj
@midlifebjj 5 жыл бұрын
Herman Andretti I missed this comment man...sorry about that...I use Tiger balm on my neck and shoulders for soreness. I also use a tennis ball (lacrosse ball works too) for targeted soreness. If you have a significant other, they can help...if not, lay the tennis ball on the floor and position your sore area over the ball, then relax and let gravity do it’s thing...don’t roll around -- yet- let the sore area melt over the tennis ball and in about 30 seconds to 1 minute, the area should relax and not hurt (at first, it hurts and pretty much sucks 😂) - then use your feet to move your body - slightly - just enough to create small circles to relax the areas around the targeted sore area. This is what I do... oh and ibuprofen works wonders! I take 2 ibuprofen about 2 hours before BJJ and 2 right after. I don’t do this often - only on really sore days because ibuprofen can be tough on your stomach. Keep in mind I’m not a doctor! Just and old guy (44) with a little experience and this is what I do....I’m not recommending anyone follow my routine.... Mat burn: so I was told by a retired army guy who happened to be a BJJ black belt and my instructor that Witch Hazel is great for mat burn. I used it a few times and it does cause the skin to heal fast (at least I thought it did) but honestly - you’ll find that you’ll get Matt burn less frequently - the more you train. The reason is that 1) you’re skin does acclimate and 2) you learn not to drag your feet when transitioning...instinctively- you’ll just stop doing it...I used to get terrible mat burn and unless you’ve had it - you really can’t appreciate the pain little drops of water from a shower can cause 😂😂😂. Sorry about missing your comment, brother! Hope you’re doing well and still rolling!

Just be open and honest with your rolling partner....tell them you just started...some of my greatest teachers are other rolling partners and you can learn a ton on open mat sessions...watch one or two rounds - then roll one or two - watch one or two, roll one or two...keep repeating...just my two cents!

All good points...There is a term I use for folks that go crazy...”they’re rolling white belt hard”....I actually was the first person I used that term on....my first week or so in BJJ - I rolled white belt hard. I think we all have a tendency to go hard on day 1 because we have no idea why to do.....as a purple belt told me years ago In my first day, first roll: “Chad, you’re the most dangerous person on the mats right now” - I went white belt hard...then gased out..:.then got choked out...then signed up. Been rolling ever since. Appreciate the comment, brother! Oss👊🙏

I agree with all but the coaching thing. I'm a white belt and have been doing ju jitsu 3 months and have prior grappling experience and if some one is doing something that can and up getting them hurt you have to say something regardless of belt rank. Especially initiating take downs the wrong way, doing so could cause serious back and neck injuries. Not saying anything and letting a new guy doing a technique wrong is just plain ignorant. Also just giving out pointers to help out in certain positions during a lesson or live rolling can help build confidence and trust between team mates. At least at my gym everyone wants everyone to have fun and enjoy themselves and be safe, its not a tournament with money on the line so helping/coaching each other is a positive thing in my opinion. Everything else you listed I agree with though. Good job with the video

I hear what you’re saying...the problem I have is that while you may have some prior grappling experience and may be able to provide some basic guidance, this is not the majority. There are variables and exceptions to everything but I can’t make a video that says “don’t do this - unless....a,b,c but If d happens then you can do b”....if I did - the video would be an instructional and that’s not my goal. So I cover the majority and in most cases - a white belt shouldn’t be giving advice because they don’t have the experience. Even if a white belt thinks they are giving good advice - I’d recommend verifying with the professor or coach because bad advice is worse than no advice. If someone is doing something so blatantly wrong that an injury may occur, I’d defer to the instructor...unless the process is in motion and needs immediate attention....again, there are variables and exceptions to just about everything but as a general rule, white belts should not instruct - they should call the instructor over to correct ...heck- I’m a purple belt and I still do that....I’ve visited a lot of schools and most practice this and general rule....not say all do (again, exceptions)....appreciate your comment and hope we can find a bit of commons ground on this one...or respectfully disagree...which is okay too - when you’re responsible adults😂 which I know we both are. Thanks again, my BJJ Brother

@@midlifebjj I absolutely agree with your assessment. There are thousands of scenarios in which a white belt shouldn't be coaching anyone and there are thousands of scenarios where the white belt may actually have more experience than most purple belts. As long as everyone is safe and having fun that's the main goal in at least my mind. Thank you for responding respectfully and professionally.

Good info. What's funny is the same exact thing happened to me with bare feet in the bathroom. The only difference is one of the black belts called me out loudly in front of everybody and said "no shoes in the bathroom, that's f***ing disgusting!". I then inaudibly murmured"yeah it is, proceeded to turtle into my GI and died in the corner. Lol ok I wasn't that bad but still sucked. Hey, when you're all excited from your first few rolls you do weird things sometimes. Just happens. Thanks for your content. As a middle-aged man almost forty, just glad there's those who tried this before me.

Ugh I’m one of those white belts that coach. But sometimes it’s so difficult just crushing someone easily and you see them suffering like a new puppy to not say “Okay bro, don’t let me choke you again so easily.” Sometimes when the roll is too easy it also doesn’t do much for me. This is the first combat sport I've done, and in other sports its totally normal to pass on information that you've learned so I wasn't even thinking about it. It comes from a place of excitement and passion, but i totally understand how it comes off as arrogant, and also that I have no idea what I'm actually talking about lol. @@midlifebjj And I have a question. Of course, you may or may not have a definitive answer or insights to my situation and I understand that. Nonetheless, I have very bad back problems. Very bad. I can't walk for 10 minutes w/out being in severe pain and having to stop and rest for a while. I couldn't pick up my newborn daughter upon her birth. I can't jog. I have to lay down throughout the day at various times. Everything hurts. I don't have "normal." Driving hurts. Showers hurt. Mowing hurts. I'm sure you get the picture. Nonetheless, b/c my son started doing it, I got motivated to try Taekwondo. I was just desperate to try something in life in spite of how disabled I've become! And amazingly I can actually do TKD! There are a few things that I can't fully engage in such as some of the self-defense moves where you basically throw/trip someone onto their back. My back can't take that landing on my back like that too much at all. But I can basically do everything else. All of the crazy kicks and combos and all of that side of it. So, based on all of that, what do you think my chances are of being able to handle BJJ? Like, should I even try it? Do people with back problems ever try it out and end up being able to do it? That ever happen in your experience? Just wondering what your thoughts or suggestions might be? And sorry for writing a small book :(
