It wasn't "the thing." It was "thing." The hand was considered a member of the family. Not an object.
@MikeMakesUK
@MikeMakesUK 19 күн бұрын
He was called "Thing". However, the iconic sign on the fence read "Beware of the Thing". There were also references to "our (or the) family Thing". So technically both are correct. There was even some question as to whether Thing was person or object. Gomez suggested that he might be classified as a "miscellaneous" (see episode "Thing is Missing"). His full name is "Thing T Thing" (presumably the T stands for "The"). Of course fans will always know him simply as "Thing".

Really, Raul Julia doesn't do it for you? :O Personally, I think he combines... * The best parts of John Astin's take on the character * The stereotypical "latino lover" (which was the idea behind Steve Astin's version) without being offensive * The original cartoon version's weirdness and quirkiness * The fact that he (as a Latin-American man) actually looked like someone who could have the name "Gomez" (which is a surname, but still). Also, his endless charisma.

I am going to say this isn't true the Movie cast was absolutely phenomenal, this is the 1 IP that seemingly the subsequent playing actors I would consider on the level of the originals, no better or no worse because the cast members were all so damn good, even the newer Wednesday is phenomenal at embodying the role which makes sense as she hung out with C.R. on the set and studied the role massively, Ortega should be commended for her dedication and respect to the character, its rare you find this in Hollywood.

One of the greatest TV shows of the past...my favorite. Severals years ago, before retiring from a career in television production, I created a TV commercial for a car dealership in the month of October leading up to Halloween. In it, I had the female spokesperson dress as Morticia Addams and she started the spot with Thing opening his box and handing her the information on the car featured in the commercial. The owners of the dealership later told me the spot was so popular, people stopped in because they saw it on TV and thought it was such a better TV spot that most car dealers did. We had a blast shooting the spot. In the editing via special effects graphics we even made the inside of the dealership look like the Addams family's living room with cars parked in it.

Favorite character? John Aston. His version of Gomez far outshines others that have played the role. The show was my favorite as a kid. Though all the characters were great, and Morticia probably influenced my choice of a wife later in life!

I loved this show as a child and I love it still. My mother once said, "this show is the most positive, open-minded, accepting show, ever. Not one character ever disparages or discourages any other." I always think of that when I watch it. It's a pity it was only on for 2 seasons. Of course, to really appreciate how unique this show was, you had to have grown up in that time. This was on TV right next to The Andy Griffith Show, Father Knows Best and The Donna Reed show. They mention that the Addams Family characters were actually created by a cartoonist named Charles Addams for the New Yorker magazine, but overlook that, as a TV show, it became a spoof of all those straight-laced shows usually found on TV. Every single thing each character does -- from Gomez standing on his head, to everything about Morticia, to Lurch's taking the men's hats -- was considered completely outrageous.

...to be fair, plenty of TV and movie directors and producers would also mistreat kids to the point of abuse. For example, the kid who played Dennis the Menace (Jay North) said he was treated horribly on set. He received verbal abuse and sometimes even the physical kind. Directors and producers are notorious cheap-skates and some of them would want to keep a kid working every minute if they could, with no concern for the child's well being. Such laws were absolutely necessary -

Yes, I saw the original TV series when it first came out and I was 10 years old. I had read, many times, Charles Addams's Homebodies book. There was only the most tenuous connection between the book and the show, but that didn't matter to a kid back then. It was fun entertainment and totally different from any other show., including The Munsters (which was great in its own right). Thanks for this excellent video on The Addams Family. I always loved The Addams Family. My favorite character was Lurch. Ted Cassidy did a great job using his facial features and body language to take the place of words with the exception of the iconic, "You rang!" The vocal tone was absolutely perfect. There was and still is a very Gothic looking home in a little village where I live called Noank, CT. I don't know if the owners purposely avoided painting the place because the outside was a drab gray with a small hint of white which was originally the color of the house. When we were kids, we all thought the place must be haunted. It was rumored that the producers of The Addams Family looked at the house as the setting for the show. The amount of travel from Connecticut to California was a big problem and then they found the house in Los Angeles which took care of the travel problem. When I was in Junior High School, the owner was discovered to be a family called Gordon. They had a teenager who was 3 years older than me and played a mean guitar. For 2 years, 8th and 9th grade, we all danced to the group Eric & The Vikings. Eric wasn't weird or Gothic.
