1971 MG Midget Front Wheel Bearing Installation

This video follows my installation of the "Wheel Bearing Kit - factory spec Midget GHK1142Q" from MGOC Spares. I don't show the removal of the old bearings and seal as there are many videos showing that. At the time of creation I could not find a video showing the installation of OEM style front wheel bearings for a midget. Hopefully this is helpful for someone.

Hi, many thanks for the vid. I'm considering buying these in repalcement with 34/LJT 25 and 3 MJT 17 which are more than 70 quid EACH. Do you still think GHK1142Q are a good choice?

I can only say that the fit on my hubs was good. With 200 miles on these bearings it’s too early to know about longevity, but I have no reason to expect them to fail. My hubs, spindles, and spacers were all stock and in decent shape.

@@rogerboyle6136 Sorry, I don’t recall. Just choose a large one that is slightly smaller in diameter than the outer race of your bearing.

How do you remove the old bearings, since they're pressed in? I'm at a loss as I want to repack them and replace the seal. Thanks

Use a punch and hammer to knock out the old races. Just be careful not to gouge the surface they sit in.

Which way does the spacer go?

The spacer should be narrow end facing out.

I know this is not the subject but do you think you can help? i have a 72 Midget and need to hook the Evap Canister back up, do you know the hose routing i have the Weber downdraft? cheers any help would be fab

I don't have a drawing, and my car uses the original SUs with no connection to the canister from the carbs.

The old bearings were removed with a 1/4" punch and a hammer. There are two channels inside the hub that you can use to knock the old bearing races out from the opposite sides. Just push the spacer to one side and wipe out the old grease and you should see them. Don't use a chisel. For the stud (outer) side place the hub on a block that fits between the studs so you don't knock out the studs by mistake.
