My 2001 LLBean’s transmission slips every time it downshifts from 4th to 3rd. Should I do a fluid/filter change? Or leave it alone. I checked and it is full. I’ve heard not to change the fluid if it was neglected. Car has 167,000 and don’t think it’s ever been changed.
@BlinknoneАй бұрын
I personally wouldn't hesitate to replace the fluid in that car, but I have a fairly high tolerance for risk. 20 year old fluid had to be nasty and very compromised at this point. What I WOULD do though is change it out gradually. Do 3 drain/fills separated by 1000 miles of driving. That will get out 95% of the old fluid and it will happen slowly instead of all at once.

Subaru service manual isn't geared towards preventative maintenance for the longest mechanical life possible. External remote filters are, for some years, part of their ATF cooling systems. The flow out and in are controlled by pressure on the outlet side. Return only happens because it's a closed loop. Inlet doesn't have suction. Oil filters have bypass valve. ATF filter "restrictions" are constant. Subaru also filters on the hot side, which is opposite of other external systems. Other brands aren't Subaru design specific, and who knows what they are. Spin on filters are well known to extend service time and life of the system. Change it whenever you change all the fluid... With the Idemitsu ATF HP if it's the 5eat. Try different brands of filters and oil on the engine... Out of warranty of course.

I replaced my radiator, plugs and replaced the gear oil in the rear and center today (car had no issues before with the trans, it was strong) and after I finished, the trans was and is still slipping and shutters like crazy in 1st and 2nd and slips in reverse and wont stay in gear over 2500 rpms....any Idea why it would do that rite after the work I did or did my trans just happen to go bad at the exact moment I finished the job possibly?? PS I did not change the trans fluid or filter.

Is there a way to see if it needs a fluid change too? 247k miles but previous owner said it was changed I think.

+Sandra Morrow when you turn the key to on, do you hear the fuel pump prime for 3 seconds? Should hear it in the back of the car. If not check the fuel pump relay. Swap with a know good relay like the horn or cooling fan relay.
@sandramorrow96787 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Will try that. We can hear the fuel pump come on. But we didn't swap the relays. Will try. Thanks so much for your help.
@MrSubaru13877 жыл бұрын
+Sandra Morrow if you hear the pump, then the relay is fine. It's sending power to the pump. Pump may be weak. You'll need to check the fuel pressure. Could possibly be a clogged fuel filter. When was it last changed?

Had the same problem but addressed the issue as follows: remove the battery, along the front of that space find and loosen the 2 clamps securing the lines to the filter, along the right hand side of that space find and undo the 2 bolts that hold the bracket that holds the remote that the filter screws into, remove the remote, filter and lines from below, clamp the base of the remote into a vice and using a wrench remove the spin on filter. Assembly is just the reverse - don't over tighten the filter. Check you AT fluid level afterwards.
