The Ford F-150 Lightning is the most important electric car ever. It's also the most important pickup truck ever created.
A pickup truck is the ultimate “but I might” vehicle. But I might need to haul furniture. But I might need to drive to grandma's house while towing an 8,000-lb boat. But I might need to conquer some off-road obstacles.
Ford knows all this and knows its truck customers. It's what Built Ford Tough means, and though it's easy to dismiss as a silly marketing slogan, it means something at Ford and they aren't going to put a truck on sale unless it lives up to that billing.
And so, when Ford decided to release an electric pickup truck, the designers and engineers knew they needed to add capability. It wasn't enough to make it electric and put it on sale as they did with the Ford E-Transit commercial van. It needed to add capabilities that were only possible with an electric truck.

It's got the audio, but not temp. You get soft buttons and can yell at Alexa (I think, if it doesn't have it yet it's coming), but I see why they didn't. At some point asking about it is tilting at windmills but I don't know if we're quite to that point yet.

Great review and video ! I own a 2017 ICE F150 and this new Lightning F150 looks impressive and not quirky like some other EV trucks. My only concern is range if I decide to take long road trips and living in a Condo complex I don't have a plug-in stall to charge up.

Charge while you sleep. Get an electrician to install home charger. If you do that, you will never have range-anxiety.
@dmandman9
@dmandman9 2 жыл бұрын
Fortunately, they come standard with a home charger that plugs in to a 240 30amp that’s typical of a dryer outlet. So only an additional outlet needs to be installed. For a slightly faster charge a dedicated charger will need to be installed. But it won’t be necessary for most people because the standard charger will meet most people’s daily needs. In an emergency situation even a 120v outlet can be used. It’s just super slow. I used a 120 v with about 150 ft extension cord with the provided factory charger to charge a completely dead Mach E for about an hour so it could reach the charger at our dealership . As you stated, for most people at home charging will suffice unless they’re traveling out of town.

It definitely can't be charged while it's driving, but if your trailer is designed to serve up vehicle-to-grid power (in the same way that the Lightning can charge another EV), you could. I don't know of any trailers that are designed for this, but I suspect it's something that could come in the future.

@smartelectriccar 2 жыл бұрын
1. No. 2. Yes. Plus there is an electronic rear locker option in off road mode.
@prndlcars
@prndlcars 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely not an 8-foot bed any time soon, MAYBE in a future version but redoing the cab would be too expensive for something that has barely single-digit pickup on the current truck. We were actually having a debate between the car journalists on what the difference is between 4WD and AWD. But anyway, it is dual motor, one on the front axle and one on the rear. And like the other fellow said, the back has a lockable rear differential. The front does not. So... not EXACTLY four-wheel-drive but all four wheels can be driven... cue the off-road enthusiasts saying it's not a _real_ off-roader because it doesn't have three manually locking diffs...
@heathwirt8919
@heathwirt8919 Жыл бұрын
@@prndlcars It only would require two locking differentials since there is no transfer case.

How long do the batteries last on these EV's? How much mileage would you get with this truck 200k plus?
@db4z09
@db4z09 2 жыл бұрын
The warranty is 70% life remaining at 8 years or 100k miles. Since Ford doesn't want to be replacing batteries on most trucks in 8 years you can expect them to do much better than that. The life can be improved significantly if you minimize fast charging and avoid leaving them sitting for long periods near 100% state of charge as lithium ion batteries prefer to sit around 50% charge. Also the cells can be individually replaced if they go bad, unlike in Teslas where all the cells are glued together into solid pack.

Yeah, that's definitely a high estimate, but it REALLY varies depending on how old your house is and how complicated your home electric setup is. If you have a 1700's house in New England, it might run even higher. If you have a brand new house, you might be ready to go without much trouble.

Why dose it have an unnecessary center console shifter rather than making it a more versatile 6-seater?
@prndlcars
@prndlcars 2 жыл бұрын
Because truck folks REALLY like having that big center console to store stuff. Bench seats are really niche products and they're going for maximum economies of scale. It's the same reason why it only comes in a crew cab.
@BeckerGOP
@BeckerGOP 2 жыл бұрын
@@prndlcars My 2014 and my 2001 F150 Supercrew both are/were 6-seaters. The large center console simply flips up.
@prndlcars
@prndlcars 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, and in the regular F-150 you can still get that, in the base XL (and maybe XLT). However, the vast majority of F-150 trucks are 5-seaters with a fixed console as that’s where the market demand is. Thus, that continues here in the same way that a regular cab, long-bed truck is not an option with the current Lightning. For now, at least, if you want a regular cab or six-seater, you gotta get an internal combustion engine.
@BeckerGOP
@BeckerGOP 2 жыл бұрын
@@prndlcars Well, your answer makes sense to me. So, I guess I don't understand why market demand would be for fewer passengers. Whatever additional size the center console might be just doesn't seem to justify that.
@dmandman9
@dmandman9 2 жыл бұрын
@@BeckerGOP I work at a dealership. I’ve noticed that the vast majority of people buy the trucks with the center console with the floor shifter. Very few people haul 6 passengers today. It would be nice if they offered a split bench seat for those who wanted it. But in all honesty, I don’t think many would choose that option . Again, by far the most popular choice is the 4 door with a floor console.

I’m thinking they wanted to keep it at a certain price point as well as space constraints. They wanted to have the exact same interior and bed dimensions as their other f150s. Hopefully battery technology will improve to the point where they can get more energy from the same physically sized battery.
@streetmoney21
@streetmoney21 2 жыл бұрын
Dealership markups have made this truck not worth the price of admission. The extended battery is a $20,000 option on the lower models. The big charger needed to charge the extended battery cost $7000 to $10,000 to install with permits. Funny how people reviewing this truck is leaving out important information consumers need to know. This may be deliberate as they don’t want to upset Ford and loose access to do reviews. Consumer beware. You need to know what you are getting into when you buy this truck. The small battery will require constant charging if you daily drive it. A depleted battery will take over an hour to charge to 90 percent on public charging stations. This is going to be fun to watch as people in the real world get this truck and tell the truth about their experience.
@prndlcars
@prndlcars 2 жыл бұрын
There's some truth and some inaccuracy to this comment. The extended battery is $10,000, but they're bundling it with a bunch of other stuff depending on trim. The charger for the extended battery is included, and won't cost nearly that much to install unless your house is really old. You do need a 100A circuit to make it work at full speed. What's big money is using it as a whole-home backup battery and I specifically address that AND the cost in the video. I said it would run $15-20k which is probably on the high end, but again it depends. Any EV will require constant charging if you daily drive it, that's the point of having a home charger - that way you'll always leave home with a full charge. If you're fast charging out in the world, yes, it takes a while to charge. I cover this as well and say it's the biggest drawback of this truck. Re market adjustments, yeah, that's pretty bullshit.
@swpski
@swpski 2 жыл бұрын
To get 50amp service it will cost us $1800. 100amp for pro power charger would be $1000 more. Backup power integration is $3895 plus install. This is in a house from 1988 and a 100ftrun as a point of reference.
@prndlcars
@prndlcars 2 жыл бұрын
@@swpski $2,800 for a new 100-amp circuit (probably requiring a new breaker box, I'd think?) seems relatively reasonable.

And you are a complete fool if you buy one of these trucks right now. I cancelled my reservation two months ago after seeing the writing on the wall with the supply chain and chip crisis. We won't see the chip and supply chain get back to normal for at least three years if at all quite frankly. The economy is in a fast tail spin. Say you buy one of these trucks right now and need a part. Most likely your truck is going to sit for weeks waiting on a replacement. Any parts that are available will be 100% dedicated to the assembly line. Secondly how many dealers are going to have at least one technician trained that has the proper software and hardware to diagnose these? As much as I wanted this truck it's just not worth the risk in these crazy times. And at 70k for a decently equipped Lariat??? No thanks.
@prndlcars
@prndlcars 2 жыл бұрын
Every electric-authorized Ford dealer will be able to service these, with the proper hardware and technicians. This isn’t some experiment for Ford, they’re all in and dealers are coming along. There shouldn’t be much need for parts. That’s part of the appeal of electric. As for the supply chain… well, we’ll see how that plays out.

Ford will NOT allow a dealership to sell an EV (or even hybrid) unless they have at least one tech certified in the repair. And they provide the proper service equipment. The diagnostic equipment is the SAME equipment we use to diagnose everything else. They send updates to the diagnostic equipment almost every couple of weeks. By the way, if the dealership sells Mach E , they already have the training for the Lightning. In fact, most of the stuff we’ve learned for servicing the Hybrids that we’ve sold for years can be applied to the EVS. As for the supply chain, that’s a problem for almost EVERY vehicle right now. But when Ford has a brand new product, they prioritize those customers. For example, they’ll wave their normal repair vs replace rules for a new product.
@dmandman9
@dmandman9 2 жыл бұрын
@@prndlcars True. My dealership rushed to get me certified in EV battery service, so they’d be able to sell the Mach e . And I was required to keep my hybrid certification current (most knowledge overlaps with the EV, only simpler.) so they could sell the Hybrid F150. Our small dealership sold only one or two hybrid fusion/year. But we’ve sold a boatload of hybrid F150s and several Mach Es. The supply chain is a problem even for the normal vehicles .
