1:30 Well, that's a nice way to start the show... SPAD! Yeah, I know, the dwarf show clear, and while shunting you can SPAD as long as you doesn't cross the outer marker. Not that that mattered much for Skd 224 222 hitting a patch of ice while trying to stop at the siding at Torbjørnsbu. We went jumping out onto the line with full emergency breaking, dancing like a hippo, finally stopping about 100 meter outside the entry signal. And *they* offered a 16 year old the opportunity to drive the 224..., not just having a blast train surfing

Is the loop at Movatn too short for this train (it looks quite short)? Otherwise why was it not the usual arrangement of running into the loop to wait for the oncoming train?
@idtune2 жыл бұрын
The passing loop at Movatn is only 315 meters long and has two platforms: one side platform along the diverting track (track 1), and one short and narrow platform between the tracks. The latter can only be accessed through a level crossing, but that crossing gets blocked when track 1 gets occupied by a long train. Passenger exchange is thus normally done in track 1.

@railcowgirl question that arises from your map. Why are there no lines from Oslo direct to Honeyfoss? Both the Drammen route and the one we use here seem to be going around the north and southe edge of some large area - is that area very mountainous or wetlands or something?
@idtune2 жыл бұрын
A direct line between Oslo/Lysaker/Sandvika and Hønefoss was first envisioned in the 1880s, and has been studied and planned with different alignments since. It is now quite close to realization as a project called Ringeriksbanen. The first half between Oslo and Hønefoss is somewhat hilly (for a modern railway to get across), reaching up to about 200 meters, requiring a 20 km long tunnel to pass under the hills. Back in the late 1800s and first half of the 1900s, a few hours longer travel time to wasn't all that crucial, when you could avoid investing in infrastructure by using the lines already built via Drammen or Roa.
@alanmusicman33852 жыл бұрын
@@idtune Thanks. I imagine that project - when complete - would shave 70-80 minutes off the Bergen to Oslo journey?
@idtune2 жыл бұрын
@@alanmusicman3385 It will reduce travel time by train between Oslo and Hønefoss (and Bergen) by about one hour. You can find a decent description about the history and current plans for the project on the English Wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringerike_Line

The area is Nordmarka North of Oslo. It is protected through a law called "Markaloven". It acts kinda like national park, but it is not one. The law forbid building in the area (though with exceptions), but are open for outdoor activities, such as hiking, skiiing and cykling. This area is huge and is 5-6 times larger than Oslo city. it is also a part of the reason why Oslo is the biggest capital in Europe in area size!

Nice to see the signalling system uses a lot of unnecessary flashing to shorten the life of bulbs and wear them out prematurely. Not only does this raise the maintenance costs it has the added benefit of introducing lots of unsafe conditions by the number of blown bulbs.
@RailCowGirl2 жыл бұрын
You are aware that they use FLASHING lights to differentiate the MEANING between the signals? Blown bulbs are not an issue as they are wired into the system to trip restrictive signaling and messages. Nothing is left to randomness, Sir.
