Hi Brittany and Drew! Not sure if you are aware of this tip, but you can extend your tourist visa in Portugal, so that you can stay for 180 days, and not just 90 days. You need an attorney based in France that speaks English that specializes in citizenship by descent. Hiring a lawyer with experience in immigration is key. What I couldn't accomplish in 1 year an attorney handled for me in less than 30 minutes.

You guys are doing everything absolutely bang on. So exciting to see your journey unfold. Just want to add, investigate the health system. I know this is probably not something we need often (unless you have medical conditions) but it is important. Alentejo in that respect it's not great as it's quite isolated. You'll need to go to either Faro or Lisbon for emergencies. Also, water. So important, that your land has water. Either a well, spring or a borehole. If it doesn't, see if there are any in your neighbours, it may well mean you can dig one out yourselves.

I fell in LOVE with this quaint little beautiful town, 20 minutes from the ocean, central enough to get to anything really! Right in between porto/linbon! You guys must be very excited for this new adventure in Portugal, even us are for you hehehe, we sold our farm in Alentejo and move to the mountains between Coimbra and Guarda it's amazing here, we have been here for 2 months and we already found so much more to do, lot's of Organic Markets, flee Markets, Fluvial Beaches and we are near the Snowy Mountains of Serra da Estrela, also not far from Nazare (on the Cost), if you pass by ping us we will show you around, I'm Portuguese and my husband he is English, we started a KZbin Chanel a few months ago and it's and amazing way of creating community we love it. I love the north of Portugal though all areas are beautiful in there own way. My dream is Coimbra because of younger vibe since there is a university and an incredible library. If you need a Portuguese Immigration lawyer I will happily ask my husband for the details - they are based out of Lisbon and very good. Not sure if they would be able to help you with France. Plus if timing is good... you are welcome to stay at the Vacation Villa located in Obidos. It's in the Leira region and ideally located for searching in Nazare, Peniche, Salir do Matos, Lourinha, Tomar etc. We have guests and renovations - so as long as schedule doesn't clash you are welcome to stay. (for free of course) Oh and go kite surfing or surfing of course - both are very popular and very close to the villa.

I don't know if this is in correct English but: If you buy a camper van in Portugal, take into account possible environmental zones in the future and abroad. This applies to diesel engines. Good luck with all the preparations 👍

I was born in Germany from Canadian parents and when I turned 21, I had the opportunity to establish German residency. However, my mother, who hated living in Germany threw away the paperwork, and never told me about it. I was in the Canadian Armed Forces at the time, and therefore lost this short window of opportunity because someone made a decision for me that they had no business making. Although that opportunity is now lost, years later I won an American Visa Lottery and was able to immigrate to the USA. Canadians are not eligible for this visa lottery but Germans are, and being German-born allowed me to play the lottery. Out of 100 million people from around the world who played the lottery, I was one of 100 thousand winners. From this 100 thousand, 50 thousand visas could be granted. So, I moved to the US in 1998, became a citizen 5 years later, and never looked back. Now I am a nurse working at the prestigious Mayo Clinic and I am completely happy with the decision and my life. Hey Brittany and Drew, I dont know if you know this or not but you can get a 3 month extension to your Schegen Visa so you can remain in Portugal an extra 90 days. The deal is that you have to stay in Portugal and once you leave you cannot come back until your clock resets. Anyway if you find yourself needing more time this is a nice way to stay a little longer. Check it out with Portuguese Immigration. They have all the details. This is specific to Portugal only. Hope you are enjoying your time back in PT. We are based in the Lower Alentejo, just inland from odeceixe and Zambujeira do Mar. Very rural, non touristy (away from the coast) and much better priced than the algarve which is still only a few minutes away. Buy a van from a dealer if you can . It typically includes a warranty and they can get find you a good insurance plan. My experience from buying a vehicle in PT.

If you are looking for a place that takes you back to nature and no stress, this is the place! You guys should definitely check it out. All of the islands have something different to offer. I did exactly the same thing as you are now doing , 40 years ago I bought a plot of land in Spain ,luckily it was in an urbanización, not rural. But I was so Green,that I could have bought something that was illegal! Anyway,lots of luck but check everything, I didn't, I was just Lucky! When I look back , I think about everything that could have gone wrong! So go ahead, but please check everything!
