These are the 7 types of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The list includes what triggers Hashimoto's, and what actually causes Hashimoto's. If you know the cause you can potentially reverse the disease!
What is Hashimoto's? It is the presence of inflammation IN the thyroid gland which is OFTEN (but not always) associated with elevated antibodies.
In general, if you have thyroid symptoms and you have sympoms your doctor will diagnose you with Hashimoto’s.
Treatment of Hashimoto’s is DIFFERENT from hypothyroidism (regular hypothyroidism).
In Hashimoto’s you want to focus on your IMMUNE SYSTEM + THYROID compared to just your thyroid if you have regular hypothyroidism.
The CAUSE of your Hashimoto's matters because it directs treatment and, if you catch it early enough, you will be able to treat or even prevent further disease progression.
What causes or triggers Hashimoto's?
#1. Stress-related Hashimoto’s.
Any sort of stress can trigger Hashimoto's. This includes things like divorce, starting college, death of a loved one, and so on. Stress-related Hashimoto's is typically very hard to treat.
#2. Infection-related Hashimoto’s.
This is most commonly caused by the EBV virus but it can also be triggered by other bacterial infections as well. The treatment here is to focus on managing the infection.
#3. Gut related Hashimoto’s.
Gut related Hashimoto's can stem from things like leaky gut and tends to occur due to something called molecular mimicry.
Gut related Hashimoto's tends to respond very well to dietary changes such as going gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free.
#4. End-Stage Hashimoto’s.
End-stage Hashimoto's is when the damage to your gland is permanent and cannot be reversed. You can identify this by ultrasound in which you will see an atrophied thyroid gland.
#5. Mixed Hashimoto’s.
This includes a combination of 1 or more of those listed here. This one is harder to treat as well.
#6. Environmental/EDC/chemical related Hashimoto’s.
Iodine consumption (without protection from selenium)
Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (manmade combustion)
Polybrominated biphenyls (plastics)
Polychlorinated biphenyls (flame retardants)
The key here is to focus on detoxing your body and improving liver function.
#7. Inflammatory/Pregnancy-related Hashimoto’s.
Pregnancy itself can lower your immune function and trigger the development of Hashimoto's antibodies. The goal here is to go into pregnancy as healthy as you can be.
#8. Genetic component:
This doesn't guarantee that you will get Hashimoto's but it does increase your risk dramatically.

Sounds like I have a lot of these types. Extreme stress in college from a death of a loved one, got Mono the following year. Genetics on both sides have thyroid issues, and my hashimoto's wasn't discovered until after my first miscarriage and after that very difficult to get pregnant. I have nodules that with a fine needle biopsy couldnt decisively conclude if I had cancer, so samples sent to lab. Genetics came back positive now doc is saying to get partial thyroid removed. I have always told my doc, and I even went to another doctor in a bigger city and talked about my gut issues and was always blown off by its nothing. Asked about supplement i could take to help, again brushed off as there isnt anything for me to take. As I wait for the surgeon to call me back for a consult appointment I am finding your videos so informative and you seem to totally understand endo so well. I wish I found these years earlier to maybe help slow my process, but I guess I am at the end stage of hashimoto's.

Stress related Hashimotos can trigger the onset of Hashimotos disease. Sure, getting fired from your job or a divorce etc. etc. can give you a big spike in stress but then every 3 months here and there, you will begin experiencing hashimoto's flare-ups which progressively get worse and worse.... You go to the doctor and they test your TSH , T4 and T3 because they're in the normal or optimal ranges (if early stages of hashimotos) and they are dismissed by their doctors because many doctors only do TSH and T4 and never tested for anti-tpg or anti-tpo because those are useless for doctors. But after like a while, like 5, or 10 years later , their TSH starts going up (in the 7 or 10 , 15 or 20 ranges) , which then their thyroid get's very destroyed (like bordering end stage hashimotos) , then tht point doctors start giving them medication..... I think diet changes like gluten and dairy free are pretty easy. Maybe not 100% perfect but better.... maybe because of the stressful event, their immune system changes. Then their body starts reacting hard when the patient is eating gluten and caesin protein found in foods.... Mutations in the MTHF, and HLA-D3, HLA-D5 i have come across as genes associated with the predispoition Hashimotos.

Good video doc. Minor correction, remember, with EBV, most people get it early in life (day care etc), and it tends to present as just a bad cold, so often times they don't even known they had it until you draw serum to test etc.

I'm just leaning about how stress and anxiety and gluten trigger inflammation. I did so much research and learned for myself. I've been praying for God to save my thyroid cuz unfortunately I've had it for 15 years and I wish I knew then what I know now. I would like to know how to keep stress down when a traumatic event happens. Some things we can't control. I would assume that just recognizing the situation and that you are under a major stressor would be a good start. You're a great teacher. 👍

I believe the low sodium diet that I put myself on triggered mine. The health industry kept saying that we take in too much salt so I stopped eating canned food and stopped putting salt on my food. I should have had my doctor give me a blood test first to check my sodium levels before I reduced my sodium intake.

Stay away from T4. I've had hypothyroid with hashimotos for 25 years and found out through my really good doctor that with hashimotos your body can't convert T4 into T3 which is the active hormone. Lose the T4 and take only T3. That alone has worked wonders on me👍😊

There is a strong association between EBV, the cause of mononucleosis (which is actually a misnomer), and several "autoimmune" diseases. I do not believe that our bodies' immune system gets confused and starts attacking organs willy-nilly. I think the T-cells are attacking a persistent pathogen, like EBV, and our healthy tissues become "collateral damage", like CFS, RA, Hashimoto's, MS, etc. Thanks for your comment. Can the nodules be reversed or at least shrunken to some degree to avoid surgery to remove either partial or all of the thyroid? I have no symptoms although I have been experiencing hair loss at the top of my head for about 30 years and dry skin but the nodules showed up about 5 years ago, also I'm told the CT scan showed it looks like the nodules are too close to my wind pipe I have no problems swallowing or breathing, still feels normal like nothing is even there. I'm the fifth person in my family to develop thyroid problems.

Question. You were going over the “end-stage” hashimoto. How bad does your thyroid symptoms have to be for a doctor to suggest to surgically remove your thyroid? How bad does your body react to the removal of your thyroid? In other words, will you be more susceptible to becoming sick?

I have been diagnosed with Graves and it has never shown up on any antibodies test. After remission with Methimazole on multiple attempts I have finally decided to do the radioactive iodine treatment. Since I don’t have antibodies, or any nodules ( I have went through every test with my Endocrinologist ) what causes someone like me to have Graves’ disease ? I do have multiple close family members as in Aunts that have Hypothyroidism and Diabetes. My endocrinologist does run all thyroid lab test and metabolic lab test very frequently and she has told me not everyone shows the antibodies but after 10 years I am weary of dealing with this and hoping that it will go away. Am I making the right decision to do this ?

So...if you have gut issues, you know it? I have just been diagnosed with osteoporosis, and I did read somewhere that osteoporosis might be the first "symptom" of gut issues that manifests. What do you think? I don't have gut issues that I know of, except when I was young, I was not very "regular', but magnesium seems to have mostly taken care of that. I've had one visit/consultation with a naturopath "thyroid specialist " who said if I have Hashimotos (antibodies say, "ohhh yes, you do indeed") then I can assume gut issues--but she didn't necessarily say that would be a cause. My type could be anything. It seems like you can link almost anything to chronic childhood stress/trauma, which I discovered seems to have resulted in very poor ability to tolerate normal life stress. (If issues don't manifest physically, they manifest emotionally.) Hypothyroidism forced me to accept a lower stress lifestyle, but that obviously hasn't slowed the advent of degenerative, debilitating problems. I could well have EBV...if 70% of the population has, chances are pretty good I'm in there. Maybe I've always had gut issues. One thing you didn't mention, though I do have a couple minutes left in the video so maybe you did, is a history of disordered eating. I've tried everything to manage weight, starting around 10 years old. (My dad offered to pay me a dollar for every pound I lost, the expectation apparently being "a pound per day meant I loved him," which, I didn't, but I still tried to lose weight, and you can see the stage set there.) I was never very successful, but my relationship with food is only recently sort of normal, so who knows what all that has done? As far as I know, I'm the only one with Hashimotos , so heredity might not be in play, but I've been taking thyroid now for 15 years--don't think I'm "end stage" based on antibodies, but...could be getting there. I do have some hope, though. Osteoporosis plus Hashimotos is pushing me to get serious about getting to the bottom of it. If possible. Based on another of your videos, I'm now starting week three of Whole30, my first ever full on elimination diet. (I have done keto, but have never eliminated artificial sweeteners or dairy.) Maybe I'll learn something. Paying for tests I've never even heard of. Hope this naturopath can shine some light, because-- as much as people say allopathic doctors just want to give you a pill, working with a naturopath means costly trial and error and maybe you still don't fix it. If we can DO something, it will be worth the cost, but if 2e can't...it's hard. 😞

I've had weird hormonal problems my whole life, but didn't start levothyroxine (switching later to Armour Thyroid) until 25 years ago. I was formally diagnosed with Hashimoto's only 3 months ago. Is it a possibility that my pituitary could have been compromised from the pressure from the hydrocephalus, causing my thyroid to go out of control?

I have been on Dr. Westin’s supplements now for about 11 weeks, anti inflammatory diet, exercise 4-5 times a week, and my hair grew back. I’m also about 6 weeks in with my armor thyroid as well. It’s really crazy, but I’m so thankful 🙏🏻. I really think it’s everything , and I know that I’ll probably have bad days here and there, but overall really good. Hmm very interesting, I was diagnosed with hashi moto thyroiditis in my early teens (27 now) I have had glandular fever (EBV), rickettsia infection, anaemia, b12 and vitamin D deficiency More recently been loosing my vision similar to migraine with aura just minus the migraine. Chronic joint pain and fatigue, brain fog It’s interesting I’ve had something for over ten years and don’t know anything about it whatsoever It’s just like here take this medication for the rest of your life with zero education

in my family hashimoto's runs rampant. my sister had it her entire life, mom has it, they suspect she had it her whole life, my mom's sister, my mom's cousin has hypothyroidism, we suspect my other sister has hypothyroidism too cuz she never gains weight ever, and now i have hashimoto's. so in my family its less genetic predisposition, more like genetic inheritance.

@@drwestinchilds My father suffered with GI ulcers most of his life. The "standard" medical explanation was that stress causes ulcers. Then Helicobacterium Pylori was discovered (andi ts cure) and it became apparent that the "stress" was caused by the unrelenting pain in his belly. Fortunately, he outlived medical ignorance and lived the last few years of his life pain free.

@@conwellboccia1004 The doctor who discovered h pylori was motivated to look for a pathogen because he saw many patients who had stress free lives but were still sick. Other doctors were sceptical as they believed bacteria could not survive in the acidic environment of the stomach. He was able to culture and identify the bug and formulate an effective treatment. Not surprisingly he won a Nobel prize.
