15:45 If the story made it into the local newspaper, then it's history! Maybe a local fan could check out the archives from the library, but that would be quite the research (without the date)! :)

Very nice to see from your childhood Bjørn. This car is dark and get hot in the sun. Wil it be the same with a white car? Side by side compering?

So great to get a little backstory and his (or her) story! You give a lot of yourself to run these tests and make these videos - just the organization that it must take (if it’s Tuesday, I must be in a MIC LR on my way to AC…🤔) is mind boggling.

About the power used to cool the car - some quick back of the envelope math. Arctic circle is around 66 degrees latitude. The sun is around 21 degrees latitude this time of year so ~ 45 degree angle with the car at noon. 1370 watts/m^2 of sunlight (heat) reach the Earth, multiply by the cosine of 45 and you get approx 966 W/m^2 on the car assuming a clear day. This 2021 M3LR is black and black paint has a low albedo (0.1-0.3) meaning it absorbs a lot of heat. Let’s assume 90%. (0.1 albedo). That means it’s absorbing ~ 870 W/m^2 I think the previous car was white which has a high albedo of 0.5-0.9. Meaning it absorbs only 10%-50% of the energy. The rest is reflected. Let’s assume 30% or 290 W/m^2. 90%/30% = 870/290 = 3 times more heat for the black car. So ballpark, a white car is going to have about 3 times less heat for the cooling systems to deal with in direct sunlight.

You forgot about the windows. Most of the cars surface is made of windows which are the same colour on both models.
@paratus04
@paratus04 3 жыл бұрын
@@Poebbelmann you are correct. However I was just ballparking the figures. It’s kind of hard to know what to do with the windows. If they are regular glass they pass through visible light and trap infrared. If they are tinted then they could reject quite a bit of heat. I also didn’t take into account convective heat transfer. If these cars were in a vacuum then the colored areas would hit 78C (178F) for the black car and 31C (88F) for the white car. They aren’t in vacuum so they’ll be a lot of heat transfer with the air which makes the whole thing kind of messy to figure out in a YT comment. It does seem like the color may have a significant party to play in the power required to cool the car. Need to get a couple of 2021 model 3s in different colors and do a test.

The whooshing sound you’re hearing from the A/C is most definitely not normal. Although it still works, that’s the sound an A/C with slightly low refrigerant makes. That might explain the higher consumption you noticed if the compressor and fans need to work harder to overcome the loss of cooling capacity with low refrigerant. Also, neither my 2021 Model 3 (3 weeks old), nor the 2 SR+ you tested make that noise so I’m thinking something is wrong.

I 2-3kw idle usage is definitely very high. I usually see a draw of closer to 1kw in similar conditions. I wonder if part of the high consumption is I think the car is set to be outdoor air only based on 28:21 in the part 1 video.

White paint colour would help with cooling as more heat from the sun will be reflected. The Black and Grey colours will absorb more heat. Technically the Red should be also better than Blue, as red light is higher energy than blue and red paint will reflect only the red light.

wow I'm surprised by the 3kW for cooling! Good to know in case I get a Tesla in the future because we get 30-35C everyday here XD Could it be possbile that the glass roof doesn't insulate nearly as much as a regular metal roof because of the infrared heat from the sun? Btw loved that you added some personal story it's super interesting!

Both cars & people appreciate shade. It's probably a challenge to find large trees at this latitude, but if a shade tree is available, that's where I would park. I'm sure that the energy required to cool the vehicle would be reduced by over 50%.
