ABC Wide World of Sports
As a build-up for their rematch, Howard Cosell sits down with Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier to review their first fight from 1971. Tension builds and eventually erupts.
The day after the studio brawl the New York State Athletic Commission fined both Ali and Frazier $5,000 a piece.
Two day later Ali would avenge his first career loss as he won the rematch with a 12-round unanimous decision over Frazier.

Ali/Frazier - Two men that deeply needed each other. Two men that gave their blood and sacrificed their bodies for the sport they loved so much (and were extraordinarily good at). I don’t think we’ll ever see a rivalry as deeply personal and intense as theirs. God speed Smokin Joe, God speed Ali!
@lwmson
@lwmson 5 жыл бұрын
I disagree that they hated each other. Ali certainly didn't hate Frazier, and Joe deep down didn't hate Ali as much as he claimed. There's footage of him getting emotional when he talks about Ali's struggles with Parkinsons. It was just that Joe, by his own admission, was sensitive . He just took Ali's pre-fight banter too personally.

Do we fully appreciate what an extraordinary piece of history this video really represents? Two of boxing's most revered and influential figures - still active athletes by the way and with so much left in them - somberly (for most part at least) and nicely dressed up commentating on beating the living hell out of one another! I mean: a situation unheard of, let alone seen! If with nothing else, Howard Cosell surely made his mark in time with this remarkable studio feature!

I saw it as a small child too, but just about everyone, including Cosell, thought at first that it was a put on to hype the upcoming bout. But then you could see, as Cosell remarked, that Joe was indeed serious and really angry. I suppose that Joe had some insecurities about his lack of education, and when Ali called him "ignorant," he pressed the wrong button. However, it was daft on Joe's part to bring up the issue of hospitalization.

Ali did said that Frazier had too many white fans and referred to Frazier as a "boy." Hardly the conduct of a good loser. That was uncalled for. Ali has every right to be proud of that first fight because Ali fought a good fight. But only one boxer that night got knocked to the floor and it wasn't Frazier. The fight may have gone Ali's way had he not been knocked down but Frazier earned the victory, it wasn't given to him like Ali stated.
@joshuajarod1909
@joshuajarod1909 2 жыл бұрын
Ali was rocked and stumbling in the fight before the knock down there's no way Ali was winning easily like you said. Ali was beyond a legend of course but sometimes his fanatics get so lost in love for him that they don't look at reality. It doesn't matter that Frazier stayed in the hospital longer than Ali did after the fight, what matters who won the fight and on that night Joe Frazier would not be denied victory.

Yes, we can see his noble side, and he does have a beautiful soul, but he disappoints us almost every time (until he was much older and wiser). I really hate to say it, but his influence on his generation and the one directly under him, was immense, and in my opinion, vastly negative. He was the HERO of so many, and can you imagine what the world would be like if everyone were so arrogant, bigoted, so full of hate? Does the legacy of Jim Crow Laws explain and justify this kind of behavior? If so, when will we ever, ever be free? The 'devil' is the anger, the hatred itself, on all sides. Centuries from now, if the human race survives, we will look back on this with sad, incredulous irony- grown men being paid huge sums to injure each other physically , emotionally, and yes, mentally as well. How crudely, how low can humanity sink into the mire?

It was a completely stupid thing for Frazier to say- that Ali had gone to the hospital. Frazier went to the Hospital for one week, and then returned to the hospital for three more weeks. And because he had such bad brain concussion his body was shutting down. And without a month of care he would have died. Ali went to have his jaw checked, and then he went home.

After seeing this fight 6 times, reading Frazier's autobiography, and Angelo Dundee's book, here are somme observations and facts. Ali had to take the fight as he and his family had no idea how the Supreme Court would decide and he was financially stricken. Angelo Dundee knew Ali needed at least 3 more fights to be is shape to fight Frazier. Frazier won the last round decisively and a few others. If you weren't counting the punches landed, then Frazier won this fight. Let's say he did. The fact is after the fight Joe Frazier was never a threat in the ring again due to the physical damage that Ali gave him on 3/71. Ali fought 9 times in the next 2 years after this fight. Frazier 3 times f you count Daniels and Stander as pro's. Frazier was demolished by Foreman (his manager Yank told Joe to not fight Foreman). Because of the punishment Frazier took by Ali who had almost 4 years taken away, Joe was in serious critical condition necessitated to a hospital for over a month. Bottom line, the Ali fight cost Joe Frazier his boxing life. Yank his manager and his life long friend knew it and Frazier somewhat admitted it in his Autobiography. On a side bar, Frazier never fought, Norton, Ron Lyle, Sonny Liston, Earnie Shavers, Jimmy Young (he ducked them all) and only one man ever knocked out and whopped Foreman. His name is Ali.
