@@grootsChannel I get what you are trying to say but if you have been diagnosed then please do not trivialise your disability. Those years of social isolation, of not fitting in, the constant confusion of all those little habits humans pick up from others that you completely miss, the resigned dread of being the freak for not being like everyone else and the years of anxiety forced upon you by others. Please understand that none of these experiences are lessened by NTs showing off their "autistic traits" of sitting in the same place in the canteen or needing to tidy their desk every so often. I remember when I thought like that, so if you are autistic and do believe that everyone is a little autistic then please understand that NTs really do have an easier time of it and you are not just a dumbass for struggling with social interaction, your feelings towards shopping centres are valid, your anxiety and mental health issues can be beaten with help that you should look for. That, in other words you are not a freak who should be able to cope with the same stuff everyone else is and failing, you're a strong individual who has overcome a frick-ton of challenges that NTs wouldn't bat an eyelid at and can meet your other challenges. If you're not autistic, please re-evaluate your life and try to find out what is making you try to both hijack what little sympathy we on the spectrum might get and belittle us for your own amusement or from the belief that we are faking.

I am firmly of the opinion that having religion is like having a p*nis: it's fine to have, totally cool to take pride in, and it's ok to share. It becomes a problem when you whip it out in public, wave it in people's faces, and try to shove it down an unwilling throat.

Yes there are some things but it also depends how much autistic she is. The kind of autism the little one could have is early childhood autism, so she can have speech problems and learning problems as well as other things with autism, she may neeed a daily routine and too much noise can give her an overload . So yeah autism can cause some issues you need to be prepared gfor.

Story 4: YTA. I have Asperger's and i am jealous of that child. I wasn't diagnosed until i was SIXTEEN. I think it was 16? Look, this was over a decade ago, leave me alone. Anyway, I was at a diffucult point on the spectrum in my early years. I was severe enought that even the classmates in elementary school knew i wasn't normal/right/whatever, but mild enough that nobody thought i might have a mental disability. School bullies gravitated to me and of course they got off with a warning every time. My own parwnts mentioned they had moments that they were ashamed of how they handled what turned out to be Asperger's-related tendencies. Funny, because i don't remember any of them.

Just got diagnosed with autism at 26 this week. No one treated me like other kids; I was “defective” to the core, and they treated me badly for not rising to the challenge. By treating me “the same” without acceptance, they harmed me. If this mom is prepared to unconditionally love a child as she is, a diagnosis will only help her love that child better. I could have been ok if I had that.

I hope this past year has treated you kindly. It's terrible to go through life with an undiagnosed medical issue, especially when people use it to hurt you. Lately, I've been wondering if it's we "neurotypicals" (I hate this word, because nobody is "typical") who are "defective" (this word should never be used for people; I'm only using it to drive home the point that your bullies were wrong). Maybe the people who are autistic are the ones who see the world as it truly is. I can only imagine how overwhelming and overstimulating it would be to live with every sense wide open to everything. Maybe those of us who aren't autistic automatically tune out most of the information we receive, like being eternally nose blind. That makes us the "defective" ones. I hope I explained that correctly. It makes sense in my head, but my migraine meds fog my brain. I'm sending you gentle internet hugs. 🤗💙

I cannot believe what I heard in story 1. This is what people use as evidence to support schools teaching sex ed. I believe at a certain age parents should teach their kids sex ed. Yet parents either don't or they won't teach properly. If this is coming from a Christian again. Oh my word these people have my brains scrambled. Story 4: I am on the spectrum. I have to say Opie is the butthole. You do not cuddle the kid just because she has a disability. What you do is you learn to communicate things differently and discipline her the same you would discipline any child. Yeah it may be difficult but by holding the kid on the same measure as the others and having that consistency, she be much higher functioning and able to deal with life.

You know...a co-worker of mine was getting married and she asked someone else we worked with to be a Bride's maid. They were friendly but not super close, but because her fiancé wanted to add another groomsman, she wanted to "balance the line." So the co-worker who was asked (whom I was good friends with ) confided to me that she said yes...but was a but dismayed over the $300 dollars for the dress she had to buy, plus the shoes and accessories so they all "matched." I just recall thinking it was very, very nervy, and I would never have the gall to expect anyone to shell out that kind of money for the "honor" of being in something like that... So where do people get off asking "go-fund-mes" for the life they want to live? I can understand when it's "mom has cancer, dad got laid off and we're losing the house" or "my child needs an operation at a special hospital and we can't afford to get there." But for things that are not life and death? Or the entitlement that people think they have this magic right to have children no matter the costs, or issues? Infertility sucks and must be extremely painful, but sometimes dreams don't come true. And it's not right to demand others foot the bill.

Glad you have been doing some Autism reading Mark, just goes to show that you are a really decent guy. I think the OP in story 4 would about die in my house. I often will say how much I ‘love’ my 12 year olds autism as it can make him so funny (probably have to be there!) he is high functioning so we will explain why something was funny and he loves to make his sister and me laugh. I adore my son and his autism is just a part of who he is, I love him so much and even if there was a ‘cure’ for autism I wouldn’t want him to have it. That doesn’t mean we haven’t done years of speech therapy, occupational therapy, education plans and the like. That OP sounds like someone who is professional at being ‘offended’ for other people while having no clue at all what that group of people actually go through or what they need. Story 1: Those "parents" are delusional. OP needs to find some where else to stay until school is back in. I won't be surprised if they try to "find" a husband for OP, since sister is sooo happy. OP being homeless is better than being in that kind of delusional environment. NTA Story 2: No one is entitled to anything because "family". It is OP's choice to donate or not. Also all this BS about "keeping the piece", or "don't rock the boat" is crap. Get a spine and stand up to BS. No means no, not "no until we harass you until you do what we want". F that. OP should make their own post explaining things once and for all. NTA Story 3: Does the sister really think she has the right to tell OP who they can or can't be friends with. The sister does have the right to be upset with the friend and ex, but she will be hurting her child (and sister) at the end of the day. If she doesn't want to go, she doesn't have to. However; she doesn't have the right to ruin OP's wedding. Let the child go with someone else if she doesn't want to be there. We all have people that we don't want to deal with, but as adults we know it is not our place to say anything. We just have to avoid or go NC the worst ones. This is OP's friend, and her sister will HAVE to see them for the rest of her child's childhood at least. The friend shouldn't have got involved with someone who was married, but the husband is the one who stepped out. The sister should be mad at her ex not at her sibling. The sister will see them in the future. OP has probably been friends with them for years. NAH(expect the ex BIL) Story 4: It sounds like just maybe the SIL is not ready to accept the reality but is at least open to the idea. I hope she does continue to love the child the same no matter what. Many parents don't. Every one got to upset at OP for voicing her concerns. They are the ones who are over reacting. OP should have worded things differently. ESH

How is she gaslighting them exactly? She's asking them to choose because she was wronged by not only her husband, but her sisters best friend and then her sister by inviting her to a fitting that the Affair partner was going to be at without telling her. OP is completely unreasonable to ask what she's asking of her sister who is freaking pregnant on top of all of it. I hope she cuts OP off personally. She's made it clear that she's siding with the affair partner and not her own sister.

Story 4: I'm of two minds on this one. On the one hand, the SIL saying that it's a non-issue because it doesn't change how she feels about her child.... Okay, great. You still love your child. Nothing about that has changed in any way. Good for you. That's certainly better than treating your child like a piece of furniture that's taking up space now that they have a diagnosis. On the other hand, OP is right that that mentality alone is not enough to do right by this child. How she said it may have been fucked up, but that child is going to need early intervention services, speech therapy, occupational therapy, do social stories, they'll need an IEP for school, they may need to get appointments with a pediatric neurologist or developmental pediatrician. You can't just go from, "oh, my child isn't developing normally" to "That's okay, it's probably just autism," and do nothing else. There are lots of things that this child will need to have put in place if they're going to be able to mesh with society. Maybe the SIL was already going to take care of all that and thought that OP was talking down to her, or maybe SIL is going to be one of these moms who lets her child roam free, never disciplining, never correcting, never teaching, and just says to everyone, "Oh, it's okay. My child is autistic," as if that's some kind of armor that her child can wear all their life. I don't know because there are missing pieces to this story.
@purpleiguana208
@purpleiguana208 4 жыл бұрын
@Gi Gi Well that's why I said that it seems like there are missing pieces, whether OP left things out intentionally or this mom maybe has OP on an information diet and doesn't feel the need to share all the ins and outs of it. But the way it was written, and all we have is OP's telling of it so that's biased right from the beginning, it seemed like the mom was like "yep, the doctor's think it's autism, but hey we know what to call it now, so that's all we need to know." (Not what the mom said, just how OP seemed to relate it.) I already acknowledged that maybe the mom is already taking steps to do what needs to be done. I'm just making the allowance that in the event that she's not, more is needed for this child than just having a diagnosis.

Story 1, a random thought sprung to mind. When I was still Catholic my grandmother (very religious, and abusive because of it) would say, "the Devil doesn't tell us to believe in him, he tells us we can believe in ourselves" (meaning he tells us we're superior to God and don't need him, i.e. the Devil leads us to atheism). I'm an open-minded atheist now and a parent, and I still hear similar rhetoric, and here's the thing - as a parent, I want my kids to listen to me and trust me, especially when they're young, because they don't have the tools to make their own choices. But part of being a parent, one of the most important parts at that, is teaching them how to make those choices for themselves. If I wanted my kids to be reliant on me their whole lives, I'd be a pretty shitty and abusive parents - I WANT my kids to believe in me, but I want them to learn to believe in themselves, too. Assuming God and the Devil are real, I think the sentiment of "the devil tells you to believe in yourself" is wrong - I think it's God that teaches us to believe in ourselves, and it's organized religion that insists we must believe in them. A lot of toxic religion has a person or organization in the middle of it claiming to speak for God and telling people that their personal studies, thoughts, feelings, and revelations are only valid if they agree with that specific church or person. I guess what I'm getting at is that if there is a God worth worshipping, they want to empower us to tell oppressive organizations to get rekt. Any decent parent, Godly or otherwise, would say OP is NTA. Just read the bible ffs, Jesus didn't say shit about gay people, but he would have had some serious table-flipping to do at the parents' pride and arrogance.

Story 1 OP was absolutely right to do what was done in front of other people.....perhaps saving their children from the same fate as the sister. My parents were devoutly religious Catholics. I have no idea when I learned about periods....because I was so young I can't remember. I'm fairly sure that I asked a question about my mothers feminine hygiene products at some point and she told me. I also know that I always felt comfortable talking to her about those sorts of things and asking questions. I have two much older brothers and they apparently knew long before they got married as well. I went to a catholic school......and we had sex education. A few forms of it. First in hygiene class, then in biology class.....and then yes, in religion class. Sex, is first and foremost, biological. It's how humans reproduce. There is no place in biology classes for religion, morality, ethics. That's not the place for it. It can be covered in explicit sex ed classes, of course and touched on in hygiene classes as well. For us, we learned the religious, moral, ethical, and societal aspects of it in our religion class. We also learned something else very important: There is no debate about the biology of sex and human reproduction. There is nothing BUT debate regarding the morality and ethical considerations surrounding it. There was no option for parents to opt their children out of it. Before anyone wonders, yes, we discussed contraception. Both in biology class (the scientific aspects of it) and in religion class, the morality/ethical issues and the reasons for the stance of the church. Basically, we were given all of the information we needed to make an informed decision on the matter. There is something especially sinister in preventing people from a full understanding of how their own bodies work and that includes sex. It SHOULD be a crime to withhold that knowledge. OP is NTA. Story 2 If you can't afford IVF then you certainly can't afford a baby. If you can't afford rent and your car payment, you can't afford a baby. OP did the best thing possible for the potential baby in saving it from being born into that crap show. OP is NTA. Story 3 First, and this is kind of important, can we all agree that the best friend here is an absolute moron? She has been having an affair with this guy for 2 years. He has a 1 year old child with his wife (so he was clearly sleeping with both women at that time) AND his wife is currently 8 months pregnant (Ditto on the sleeping arrangements.) I always wonder, does the affair partner consider that the guy is cheating on them when they are sleeping with the spouse? How does that work? Anyway, she said, "AITA for just wanting a perfect day where everyone puts their differences aside for me" Yup, she's a Bridezilla. The differences people should be able to put aside are things like, politics. Not inviting your cheating BIL and his affair partner to your wedding. Her best friend was sleeping with her BIL......and he was screwing around on her pregnant sister but she said sorry so now everyone needs to get along so OP can have a perfect day! What a bitch. She better be careful, her friend might decide to move on to HER husband next. As for what *I* would do in this situation......let's just say that they would never find the body.....I would absolutely support my sibling. OP is absolutely TA. Story 4 There are certain things on Reddit that are a given. If a post starts with, "I know that title sounds bad but hear me out" you know it's going to be 1000 times worse than you could have imagined. Another is if someone comes in seeking validation they are CLEARLY in the wrong. Nice to see some things don't change.... OP is a jerk that doesn't seem to understand what was being said. There is a meme that went around a few years ago about a gay son preparing to "come out" to his parents. He was talking to his boyfriend about being worried and was overheard by his father. He father left him a very sweet note the next day....something along the lines of, we've known since you were 6 and we love you....absolutely accepting....even telling his that he and his boyfriend were a cute couple. One could have said that the son was a bit "throwed off" as in different from the norm. So? That kids parents didn't care.....they loved him as he is. This kids parents don't care, as in they love their child as is.....no wailing and gnashing of teeth necessary. No massive therapy needed to deal with this trauma. The parents here are following the necessary steps for a diagnosis, will handle each issue as it arises and beyond that treat their child exactly as they would have otherwise. Honestly, sounds pretty healthy and accepting. OP wants to make a big deal out of it. Have family meetings, make a plan.....etc. It's not her business. If she doesn't pull her head out of her ass she will likely never be given much access to the child or the family. OP is TA.

On the subject of Pyramid Schemes. In NA you have to be very careful(from a legal standpoint) when you use that term, as it is often applied to companies that are *not* from a legal standpoint, a Pyramid Scheme. While I do not know all the companies you referenced, I can assure you that Avon, is not(legally speaking) a Pyramid Scheme. People tend to lump Multi-Level Marketing companies, in the term Pyramid Scheme, however, if the company is actually selling a physical product, through it's sales agents(or whatever term the company uses) it is a legal company(assuming they aren't breaking some other law) and not a Pyramid Scheme. Now that I've said that, yeah the great bulk of those companies do suck, as it is virtually impossible to make a living wage simply by selling their products. However, many of those companies do make fine products, that allow people who do not wish/need traditional full-time employment income to supplement their earnings.
