One of the best things about this movie is it gave us 20 years of Hugh Jackman as Logan (and the rest of his career isn't shabby!) When he was cast there was universal confusion, an Australian singer/dancer as one of Marvel's most badass characters?? Proved everyone wrong. Mr Jackman is a fucking beast in these movies and his training for them was crazy.

One of the common themes in the comics is that Wolverine also has an animal-like sense of smell. I’m guessing that they took it out of the later movies because even though Wolverine lifted his head and sniffed right before every time that he knew something he shouldn’t have , people like Alex missed it. I don’t think it helped that they didn’t actually mention it very much out loud. I liked the heightened animal senses a lot and it’s certainly more accurate to the character in the comics (in general in the first movie I feel like Jackman had more of an openly “animal” demeanour), but the sniffing is easy to miss if you aren’t looking for it/already expecting it from Logan and I don’t think he ever once actually drops a “The nose knows,” or explains he can see in the dark in any way at all in the dialogue. If this is your first introduction to him it would’ve helped a lot to actually say out loud that Wolvie has animal traits beyond the claws.

In this movie rogue is 17 years old and throughout the first 3 movies she is dating bobby (iceman) however in the comics/animated series from the 90s she was in her mid 20s and had a thing for gambit and she had a really thick southern country girl type of accent. Gambit is the guy who can make anything he touches explode when he charges it.

And it's comic book physics, so it doesn't really work like realistic magnetism. Not all metals respond equally to magnetism. Anything with iron in it - yes, definitely. But did you ever try to pick up an aluminum soda can with a magnet? There are other forces besides magnetism - many of which are stronger. The way his powers are depicted is totally OP, but written so that he's always held back for some reason. He could walk into a hardware store, buy a few boxes of nails and kill anyone he wants and take over the world in a very short time.

Cyclop's deal is that he has laser blast eyes, but because he got a head injury when he was a kid, his blast is permanently on and uncontrollable. So he has to constantly wear red quartz visors or glasses to stop his eyes hurting people and destroying things.

They did Cyclops dirty in these films, putting him under Wolverine’s shadow. But note that in the comics he is a total badass and LEADER of the X-Men. Even though Wolverine butts head with him a lot, he RESPECTS Scott. Think of Cyclops as the “Captain America” of the X-Men. Suuuper underrated character because of these films. Best portrayal of him is in the “X-Men Evolution” series (which you should totally react to one day if you continue on your X-Men journey 👀). Anyways James Marsden deserved better.

You have no idea how powerful Magneto is. Even the Avengers would have a hard time fighting him. Iron man would be crushed in his suit. Captain would get cut in half by his own shield. He can also lift Thors hammer and throw it back at him. Anyone that relies on a metal weapon would be useless against him. Any metal on the battlefield becomes his weapon. He could have defeated Ultrons whole army all by himself. He'd even be able to stop Thanos from snapping his fingers and remove the Infinity gauntlet from his hand piece by piece. In case you didn’t know, the man that controls metal, magneto, is the father of Wanda and Pietro maximoff in the comics and shows. This meant that Wanda and pietro were technically mutants. I believe the MCU retconned that and changed Wanda to be a witch and since they showed their parents in WandaVision, Magneto isn’t their father in the MCU. Unless they change it and say that the parents shown in WandaVision were not actually their parents and Magneto is actually their father

Disney couldn't use the word "mutant" because Fox owned the rights to it however after they got the rights, Disney started hinting at mutants. In WandaVision, it stated that Wanda already had powers and the testing she went through just made her powers come out/made her stronger. I'm hoping that Disney uses adoption to fix the storyline a bit but realistically, since there's a multiverse, Magneto might not have been their dad in that universe.

It's as Quinnzel said. Disney at the time didn't have the rights to X-men, and thus couldn't call them mutant. They just happened to be people with the same name, with the same powers, but different history to fit into the MCU. If they rebooted the MCU now, they could intergrate the X-Men in and their lore. But if they tried right now, it would cause too many plotholes. For example, technically Thanos is a Mutant even.

Yes, what you said is true. In ONE continuity. But not so in others. Most every other continuity, Quick Silver and Wanda are Magneto's Daughter. Most importantly, it is that version of Continuity where "House of M" comes from, which is what the Wanda from WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness is based on. The Wanda who went crazy cause of her kids, warped an entire universe into her own dream world of madness, and at the end whispered "No More Mutants" And wiped out 99.9% of Mutants from All Timelines, All Universe, All continuity, and was the first stated fact that the Wanda was a Multiversal Threat Level, and the most powerful Mutant, and being in all of the Marvel Universe, Reconning all the old all powerful reality benders that are in fact stronger but just don't exist in the new continuities.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when you watch some of these movie series back to back, is that they build on one another. Kind of the way the Bond franchise did. Better CGI, more elaborate stunts, and more character development. I wish you could feel the anticipation of having to wait a year or two for each new installment.

In the comics cyclops is pretty powerful, as his beam has been described as having enough force to punch a hole through a mountain, and that coupled with his strategic intelligence makes him a very capable leader, but the movies characterize him in a very different way, and they also don't put his powers on display as much as some of the other characters so he comes off kind of unimportant (imo), they sort of leaned into the romantic aspect of him.

The X-men universe as dreamed up by Stan Lee and those at Marvel comics is so well thought out. The back story of Prof. X and Magneto, starting out as friends, and technically still are but on different ends of the moral debate (on how to deal with normal humans). Such incredible talent of the authors of the comics.

Great dynamic with those 2, probably the best hero/villain relationship in comics. They were modeled after Dr. King and Malcom X, and the mutants represented just about anyone who was discriminated against because of their differences in race, creed or religion.

They were very much an allegory of the times, and Professor X and Magneto were directly patterned from Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X respectively. This is actually one of my favorites just because of how well they set up the universe and its rules, as well as the two warring factions, their motives and members. Simple and uncluttered and deceptively hard to do well with such a large cast. Logan and Days of Future Past are my all time favorites though. Wolverine, as you can see, is the break out character-and yes, its a paternal-daughter relationship between him and rogue. Despite his own opinion of being a terrible role model for others, he actually is a truly great mentor. He's really short in the comics and Hugh Jackman very much isn't, but he won fans over very quickly with his perfect performance in the role. Cyclops sadly isn't as popular by a long shot and the movies do him no justice. The love triangle is straight from the books. He is a tremendous leader when written correctly (on par with Captain America)but that won't really be coming across in the movies. Storm is also a better character in the comics. The movies spend more time getting her hair right than her character. Her actresses try their best but aren't given nearly enough to work with. The cartoon handles her much better. You should give that series a try, especially with Xmen 97 coming soon. Rogue is a truly tragic character (never being able to enjoy simple human contact sucks)and is handled mostly well in the movies. Jean's a complicated character in comics and movies. But can't say much that wouldn't be spoiler-ish. Magneto is handled extremely well as is Prof X. The deep friendship they still share despite being on opposite sides makes for compelling drama and they both get played by top notch actors throughout. And both are tremendously powerful. As mentioned elsewhere they are based on Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr. In the comics the Xmen are often symbolic stand-ins for minority groups- ethnic, religious and social. White/Black/Asian straight/bi/gay cis/trans christian/jewish/islamic/pagan/athiest etc all get represented in the comics and to a lesser extent in the movies. For example, Mystique is literally gender fluid and can have sex as a man or a women(making her potentially bi as well). Hopefully the anti-woke people won't freak out to badly when they enter the MCU, although I've seen a few complaints already that they hope Xmen won't try to be SJW's and just stick to action. Xmen were built on social justice-something Stan Lee was very vocal about. As for watch order I recommend release order: X-Men (2000) X2: X-Men United (2003) X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) X-Men: First Class (2011) The Wolverine (2013) X-Men: Days Of Future Past (2014) Deadpool (2016) X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) Logan (2017) Deadpool 2 (2018) X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019) The New Mutants (2020) There are also the TV shows The Gifted and Legion(save for last) which are difficult to fit in exactly. Both can be watched after the movies are done. Xmen continuity is very convoluted as some movies are prequels and one is both a prequel and a sequel all at the same time. But the end credits (yes, make sure you keep an eye, out some of them do have an end credit scene or scenes!) for many of the movies sets up the next one. And usually has some twist that, if missed will permanently confuse you. DO NOT watch Deadpool 2 before Logan.Seriously. DO NOT. Once you see both you'll know why. BTW Legion is actually kinda a musical. Not many musical superhero TV dramas out there. Its weird, but if you go in open minded knowing its meant to be VERY weird, you might enjoy it. Drugs aren't required, buuuuuuttttttt....could help... Hope you enjoy X2. The opening has the best comic to movie translation of a character's powers ever. Wow.

Alex, as you progress through the X-Men franchise, please note the relationship between Charles and Eric. Not many people talk about it, but to me it IS the greatest relationship in the movie history. The amount of respect they have for each other and their background... Truly fascinating. As for the X-Men hierarchy. I'll start with great movies: 1. Logan. Absolutely incredible from every point of view. 2. Days of Future Past. Arguably the best X-Men movie, not the Wolverine solo film. 3. X2. When the sequel is better than the original. 4. FIrst Class. When origin stories are really well told. 5. X-Men 1. Very good intro. Then decent movies: 6. The Wolverine. The story is nice, and Hugh Jackman is HUGE. 7. Apocalypse. An unpopular opinion, as people mostly hate it, but imo it has its moments. Okay that is it. And the piles of garbage include: X3, The Dark Phoenix, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I haven't mentioned Deadpool because, although it's the same universe, it feels much different. If I did list 2 Deadpools, they would be in the great section.

Loved this movie when I saw it back in 2000. It felt like the first real Superhero movie without the goofy effects or dialogue, especially the Wolverine intro, then Cyclops and Storm showing up in the background. The opening WWII scene with a young Magneto really set the tone too.

I watched the cartoon for years so by the time this movie came out, I had characters I loved and I knew some backstory. I was thrilled with this movie. I had reservations about Jackman because Wolverine is short, thus his nickname as a small but fierce animal, and I only knew Jackman as a Rom Com actor, but, man, he owns it!

This was before anyone state-side really knew what HJ was capable of. If you give that man a role, he goes 110% into it, and this film certified him as a go-to actor for authentic and convincing portrayals. The only thing against him is that he’s a foot too tall for the role, and thankfully, the producers were okay with ignoring that character point for casting purposes. Wolverine was easily the most popular X-man, and they got him for SEVEN films plus a cameo in First Class! That kind of staying power has only been seen in franchises like Star Trek (Leonard Nimoy) and Star Wars (Darth Vader and Luke).

Right. In the comics and to a lesser extent the movies, mutants tend to have weird hair styles and colors. Storm's hair is naturally white from birth, comics Rogue was born with that slight white streak, Logan's hair has this side poof wind-blown thing that reforms even after his hair is completely burnt off. He doesn't comb his hair it just forms like that. Some characters have green, purple or multi-color hair naturally. Skin tone can vary too. Mystique is blue normally. Some have a purple skin, some have red. So can eye color. Yellow for Mystique, glazed over white for Storm when her powers activate.

The brow guy / Sabertooth is one of my favourite, he has long relationship with Wolverine. Check his appearance in the comic. He is a cool character. (The actor is Tyler Mane who was a former wrestler, ever played as Ajax in Gladiator, and Michael Myers in Halloween remake) And also the other guy with long tongue was TOAD, not serpent you silly (The actor is Ray Park who also played Darth Maul). Serpent tongue can't do like that. Also, the movie mentioned his name again and again. Wolverine and Sabertooth's age are way older than proffesor X (Charles Xavier) and Magneto (Max Eisenhardt). Wolverine has lived a long life, and fought many battles included in Civil War and World War II, and yes, Wolverine met and fought beside Captain America during WWII in the comic. And yes, Wolverine aka Logan is known well with his Cigars, even in the comic. Fun fact, Logan before the weapon X surgery that coated his bones, he already have retractable bone claws and superhuman strength, superhuman reflexes, special healing power that also slows his aging, and he also known to have wolf-ish senses (like the strong sense of smell and tracking abilities).

This probably wasn't intentional, but thanks for posting this during Pride month. I'd forgotten how this felt when they released. Being a gay, somewhat closed young adult when this came out.... The themes of having a secret to hide, the fear and discrimination, anonymity being your best defense, and so on... It was easy to relate. Felt good thinking of ourselves as secret superheroes. The original comics were out in the 1960's and with all the gay artists involved in the comic industry the subtext of being different and having to remain secretive until you were among others of your own kind was their way of letting everyone know the problem. To see it through others eyes was their way of showing all people that bigotry and hate were the thing to revile, not the person. That's why they were heroes, they stood for something just like the young hopeful gays in the sexual revolution leading up to Stonewall and after.

Yeah fked up thing about his claws is that not only does he feel them tear through his skin everytime but also his muscle and ligaments as they travel from his forearm to his knuckles. With his superhuman healing that process never getting any easier it as is repaired constantly. And yes Logan and Rogue has a relationship akin to father and daughter. Can’t remember if it was exactly the same in the comics but the 2 character have always been fairly close. She was pretty much forgotten about when x23 came into the picture which is a shame

Finally the X-Men franchise! This is classic Marvel and was so important for the comic book movies journey to get popular! Curious fact is that they were more known by the comics and animation than the Avengers back in the day, before the MCU gets so popular, Fantastic Four too. With the mutants and the X-men planned to be brought into the actual main MCU, it’s even more exciting and fun to look back on these movies. I can’t wait for X2, Nightcrawler is my favorite from that movie. I also can’t wait for First Class, because Beast is another one of my favorites that I think you’ll like. 😄
