I love that Aretha was so content being as private as she was. She found a nice balance between being a public figure while not overexposing herself to the world. She's never harsh, but she makes it clear where her boundaries are. Aretha is regal and wherever she went she carried herself as such. Joan was the hardest interview back then. Other artist may have been intimated by Joan but not the Queen. As far as being relieved when you have cared for someone who required that kind of care as Aretha's dad you still feel the loss. RIP to both, the world is different since they both left.

Joan can seem to joke too much but its because she jokes through her own tragedies but it can come across a little crass in interviewing especially because she is also a fast talker throwing in genuine questions with parts of her comedy routine. Aretha had tokeep a good pace in order to process Joan’s intent.

It is amazing to me how some people who conduct interviews have such little knowledge about the lives of the people they are interviewing. I wonder if Joan Rivers is even cognizant of what it must have been like for someone like Aretha Franklin who was born and grew up in a nation and environment where Jim Crow and Segregation were state sanctioned. Aretha held back so much and exhibited so much grace during this entire interview.

When Joan said we’re you Relieved when your father passed I cringed a little. but I’m glad Aretha clarified her on that one. I understand totally how Aretha was feeling on that because my mom passed from cancer. She was sick for 2yrs and bedridden for 1yr. I felt no relief when she passed.. That type of questioning could’ve gone way left for Joan but I l on ve how Aretha handled it.

This interview was really a wrestling match because Joan was trying to get Aretha to open up and Aretha was very guarded and defensive. However, we know that she was intensely private. So I understand that. So in my opinion you had to be a very skillful and tactful interviewer to really get a good interview probably person that very reserved.
