Two of the absolute MMA striking pioneers going at it! Maurice Smith, Bas Rutten and Igor Vovchanchyn were the first MMA fighters with a striking base to get noteworthy success.

Don't forget Marco Ruas, also although never got the success of any of those guys I think Patrick Smith deserves to be mentioned.

If you connect to an ear real good, it not only makes a freakin loud noise in your head, it can make you very dizzy. There is a scientific reason for it but it's been a very long time since I read about it.

I think not wearing gloves would be beneficial in todays MMA because it prevents many of the brain injuries those fighters will inevitably suffer due to the harder punches you can deliver with them on. Also wearing shoes is very realistic and probably prohibits shin breaks due to checked kicks.

Goddamn Bas was a powerful fighter. Taking a low kick from him bust have felt like get smashed in the thigh with a piece of re-bar or and iron pipe. Bas was using the kind of tactics in the early 90's when UFC still had dudes like Tank Abbot in the ring. Now every single fighter fights the Bas did.

Spoiler: i think with this opponent a large part of why he gave you the choke was because he didnt know, as you say earlier in the video youre both strikers moreso than grapplers so for you to have become more grapple heavy like you do in these earlier videos it makes sense youd get that advantage over other strikers who dont really train that.

It's interesting that, though I have no doubt Bas would be competitive today, the overall level of competition was actually pretty low in comparison to today. The sport really has moved on. Or maybe 'ground and pound' has made the difference? Anyways, thanks Bas!

I think it's safe to assume that anybody with a fight IQ as high as Rutten's would have success in any era of the sport. He was like a sponge.
@0boy00
@0boy00 10 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say. Only a few guys from this era lated to the more modern ufc days and they were kind of past there prime by then. Even bas didn't have many ufc fights before his knees blew up.

Hitting to the head or hitting with closed fist was not allowed in pancrease. What ground and pound are you talking about?
@autowagon
@autowagon 10 жыл бұрын
just like in boxing you can't really compare one generation to the next. Frank Shamrock was a killer back then, he and Bas matched up very well together. You're talking about top guys at the top of their game. Even if the game changes their style may still be a notch above or too difficult to contend with simply because the game has changed so much. Nullifying Bas's kicks and liver punch would be like nullifying Liddel's overhand right, or Machida's elusiveness, not a given thing just because 'guys don't fight like that any more'.

Ropes make no sense in MMA. A cage is the way to go.
@silvaspiderxxx
@silvaspiderxxx 10 жыл бұрын
I agree dude, however, on the plus side at least with ropes you don't get fighters doing the "wall & stall" thing where they stand and clinch against the cage . But yeah, overall the cage is the only real option for MMA.
