I owned a Behringer Crave for a few months and I decided to sell it in the end. Here is my review and the reasons why I switched to a different gear at the end.
00:00 - Intro
00:33 - Cons
02:49 - Pros
07:57 - Sound purely from Crave (no more talking)
09:33 - Sound with external sequencer

I'm surprised to see so many negative comments here. 1. I'm a newbie, you see the number of subscribers is not thousands, don't expect me to be Andrew Huang, c'mon. I appreciate the time that you took to watch the video but don't be assholes. 2. I spent 2 minutes talking about what I don't like in the synth and then another 5 saying how much I like it and that all the cons are either not issues or can simply be worked around. But everyone focuses on the bad keyboard and one oscillator 🙈 3. Behringer Crave is awesome. Period. Peace everyone ✌️

I have a suggestion. Why don't you watch these excellent Crave tutorials and then come back and comment after some discovery. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXO6qY1od9aNfJo and also watch this comprehensive video comparing the Crave to a Mother 32. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJbbl32Jg7uEo68 and finally watch this video/s of an artist that really knows how to leverage the technology. Even with one oscillator. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hp3Gp2WbYpZojJI

When you place a video for the public, especially with reviews and opinions, you risk people disagreeing on you on certain points. I appreciate your perspective, but I disagreed on some points and those points are the reason why I decided to comment. Seeing other comments, I see a lot of people disagreeing on the same points. Some people trying to see black and white perspectives, like you being a hater and me being a fanboy. My main thing is, if you put up a video with 'why did I sell it' , it comes off as if you did that because of the negative sides of the machine. Which is fine, but to me I feel these aren't justified, because most of the reasons you gave are actual things you knew before you bought it. It gives a somewhat distorted view to the viewer who wants an rational honest opinion. My comment was to even that out, as I believe the device is a must have for everyone, despite a few points of attention. As long as people arent disrespect you, or calling you names, you shouldnt be surprised when you get negative comments as they all are their honest perspectives. It's up to the buyer if this video and comments is useful enough to decide. Same goes for all review videos. I don't think you are a jerk, or something. I just disagree, mate. And if someone is plain rude to you, just ignore.

Buy 3 of them, and you've got yourself a fine 3-oscillator synth that can run circles around a Minimoog Model D at a fraction of the cost! Or just buy a Behringer Model D or PolyD (4 oscillators!).

I’ve had my Crave for 3 years at the time of making this comment. You might have evolved in your synth skills by this time, I know I did in the space of 3 years. First, I cried over the single oscillator, and “few effects”. Now, I’m best friends with the LFO, and I’ve learned to make small changes so you have a key pulse, and a sub flow of movement generating via the LFO, or ENV, or patching so you mix two things into affecting one other thing. And then dial the effect to be something really subtle. When I found that world, 1 oscillator is plenty, and I don’t need reverb or delay. Personally I love the Crave. At some point I might want a Moog, I do find that tone fuller, richer than the Crave, but the Crave is so portable and I can speak for it being very very durable, it’s been sharing bags with drums and cymbals for me and works perfectly well.

I got the Crave a few weeks back. I'm really enjoying it and the modular patch options are pretty crazy for the amount of patch points included, but I can definitely see myself swapping this for a Neutron or Model D when I get a standalone sequencer, precisely because it *would* be pretty great to have a second dual oscillator synth to go with my Minibrute.

Very good review. Straight to the point. Many of these points is why I went with Neutron. Neutron is a bit raw, and does have some design issues. I had to send 2 Neutrons back because they malfunctioned right out of the box. Patch bay switches are very capricious and finicky to say the least. Very easy to damage, and very difficult to fix. Mine still has odd tuning issues where it suddenly and spontaneously goes out of tune, and MIDI notes get intermittently stuck: very annoying to say the leastBut 2 years later it still has the largest patch bay of any cheap, semi-modular synth, and is absolutely perfect for those who love modular synthesis but don't have the space for eurorack cases in their studio or/and are on a tight budget. Yes, I would absolutely prefer Dreadbox Erebus III to Neutron but, 3X price and smaller patch bay.

Good review! Haha, I actually do love that cheesy retro look Behringer seems to put out on most of their synths. Arturia makes beautiful stuff but lately I've been all about big ugly knobs all over the place. Makes me feel like I'm piloting a synth. It's weird, but it just inspires me to write stuff. Sometime within the last year, products with a bunch of LEDs, launchpads,touch screens, etc make me feel like I'm making music with toys. Of course just my opinion and in no way meant to disrespect. I'm probably just going through a phase lolll. Great review! Subscribed. :)

The cons you say are mostly things somebody would say if they didn't knew what they bought. Like, when you buy it, you should know it has one OSC, how much patchpoints it haves. The sequencer part is not really true, which is poorly informed, and the keys... well I can relate to it, but its not ment to be live played, it's for setting up sequencers. The solution for live playing is so simple... use external keys, like you said yourself. The keys on the Crave are a bonus. For the rest, this is a Moog clone. Second you compare it with synths that are easily double, triple, quadruple the price of a behringer. I believe you didn't knew what you exactly bought and thought you get a 2000 dollar worth of machine for a fraction of a price. You are dissapointed, you sell it. That's all fine. But it does not do justice to anyone looking for genuine advice whether to buy it or not. Majority is a fan of this machine and the biggest cons mentioned on internet are the keys, the poor manual made by Behringer, (Moog offers a better one), and the issues it sometimes can cause when using it with Eurorack. But despite, this is a steal. No such thing for this price exists. And if you take that into consideration, it makes no sense. It could even sell for 200 dollar and it would be a popular choice. If you have a Crave, never sell it. If you do, wait for it. Because I genuinely believe, the moment Behringer stops producing the Crave, and there aren't any other synths anymore in that price point, the value of a Crave increases. And maybe, if you still have a Crave to sell, you don't want to get rid of it.

Right, it's a great machine. I love its VCO, the deepness of the sound and patchability it has. It's a perfect device, especially for this price. I sold it because I wanted to have a dual-vco machine, like Behringer Neutron. That's essentially what I say in this video. I should have stated more clearly that I don't aim to criticize the device, will do it better next time.

@@ili_ili_music3721 Sure, I respect that. But if you have the money, I would opt for keeping both the Crave and Neutron and get crazy with them patched together. I think a cool setup would be a one OSC device for static sounds or even dynamic LFO basses/arps, and having a two/three OSC to deal with the harmonies and maybe even a extra polyphonic, to layer pads or something. And a drumcomputer/sequencer in case you need the rhythms. But that is just my personal preference. The Crave is really a keeper, IMHO.
@andewprod
@andewprod 2 жыл бұрын
I dont know if you already sold It but the sequencer is crazy for its pricepoint! You have accent control, you can add ratchets, rests and glide per step and you can change the notes of every step. Also, with the assign output (hold + shift + 8) you have access to an extra LFO tied to the sequencer! And this one can also be a random sample and hold aswell as 7 other forms. Apart from that you have 4 CV inputs for various things in the sequencer. Also, you are comparing the crave to the pico system at one point and duh, 150€ and 500€ (around there) is a huge difference! The crave for its pricepoint, again has a LOT to offer for Eurorack users. I use the crave both as a synth but also as a "effect mashine".What i enjoy most: - the lush filter, perfect for rounding up harsh sounds (you can make the filter harsh tho when you make Filter out --> filter in) - the sequencer, also for CV - the mix knob, its very versatile, It can be used as attenuator, mixer and offset knob - the LFO, as It has frequency CV input (believe It or not, its a thing a really enjoy) Ofcourse its your thing if you sell It or not but i think that this thing is unbestable for its price and that there is much more under the hood than you might think ;) Greetings :D

Hey! I have been into sound design already before i started with hardware synths, so it wasnt that hard to adapt. Using the modular side of the crave might seem a little unintuitive at first, but especially with other eurorack / behringer gear one can find infinite ways to make crazy sounds :D As a sidenote, if you use DAWs one can learn how a synth works very quickly with vst plugins. They might show a more intuitive way (with menus, explenations, viusal feedback etc) than only using hardware. But obviusly that is up to you :) Greets! @@PAAmsterdam

Having only one oscillator, surprisingly, can be a benefit when using it for bass. With two oscillators, they can start out of phase and your attack is weakened. That’s why a lot of synths have three, but having just one is an alternative at the cheaper end of the market

Nice video. I don't agree with all your negatives though (except the keyboard, of course!). The VCO, VCF, LFO, ENV, mixer plus sequencer in one box make it exceptional value for money. I find the design logically layed out with sufficient space between knobs. My only complaint would be it's not easily rack mountable (patch bay on the side like the Neutron would make it 3U and a more optimum use of space in a rack). The Crave is currently the centre of my growing modular setup.

Its cheap, quality built, has a beautiful sound, a fantastic sequencer, good filter and midi & cv connection with other semimodular stuff (in my case a Moog Werkstatt01 / Behringer 2600 / keystep). It is certainly not only interesting for beginners. If you need FX then connect it to a DAW (like other more expensive analog synths) or feed then in another synth (in my case Dreadbox Typhon, Acces Virus, or Akai MPC-One). So don't think in limitations. This beautiful synth is a valuable building block in a bigger setup. The perfect synth just doesn't exist.

Thanks for your video. I get it that you took the risk of criticising a synth as being a beginner and people might react harshly. I have only 2 years experience with a bit of Korg Volcas, Elektron Model cycles and Roland Aira compact so I can tell you I get your point. I also thank all the commenters for bringing valid objections because I just bought a crave for almost nothing (90eur) and I couldn’t believe how many were for sale. I canceled my Volca bass order and started using this wonderful baby instead because the sound is more what I was looking for: deep and rich. I realize how much I don’t know about it and people here in the comments have brought fair amount of info to dig into so thank you all and each to their own when it comes to buy/ sell/ try stuff. This was a great video, and I was prepared to not like it from the title. People should be cool, none of the "cons" are untrue, those are reasonable, honest cons. I got my crave as an intro into the modular world, so your assessment of who this is for is spot on. I had a budget on my "new studio" as well, with the intention to rarely, if ever, swap toys or upgrade. I have been very pleased. I could see, if I was a "professional musician", that there would be better tools available, but for a guy who just likes to make weird sounds and trip out for a couple of hours, it's perfect. I'm pumping it through a Zoom CDR pedal, and am in love with the sounds I'm getting.. Additionally, I can patch my volca modular through the crave to overcome the single osc issue, but tbh, its not an issue to me. Great video.

I'd say the patching options are not limited at all. For instance the VC mix out can act as either DC voltage source, mixer or an attenuator. All of these have a lot of utility for Crave or other eurorack compatible gear - for instance you can connect the VC Mix Out with knob setting over 12'o'clock (>2.5v) to Model D LC Gate and you can make it drone all the day. My cons for Crave: * Ugly * Takes a lot of desk space * Only 3.5mm audio out * Clickety click "keyboard" section * Can't be easily mounted to a rack Pros: * It's basically Mother 32 I kept my unit for a year until I eventually sold it and got Mother32 proper.

I dont own a crave (though I do want one), but I kind of feel like some of your cons are a misunderstanding of what the crave actually is. A good comparison might be something like the Microbrute, which has one osc, an even more limited patch bay, and a basic sequencer, and is still very well regarded, largely because people don't buy it for being a multi-oscillator modular sequencer synth. Not saying the device is flawless, or even that your issues with it are "wrong", if it doesnt suit you theres no reason to keep it, but I wouldnt call these things flaws
@Magnus_Loov
@Magnus_Loov Жыл бұрын
The Microbrute, although one oscillator, do have a sub and "Ultrasaw" (guess it's like a Supersaw). But Craves oscillator sounds really good on its own(and with LFO and self-resonating filter you can get additional oscillators. Plus that you can get more waveform variations by patching cleverly). It is more about the patchability and how it can work great together with other patchable synths (or even with a Eurorrack system). As a Synth of its own it may not be the perfect thing for a newbie...

Cons 1 to 4 are ridiculous. You ware aware what you buy (i hope) - mononophonic, one osc. synth with 32 patch points. Conclusion is that you shuld buy different synth. Overall, thanks for video.

I agree and disagree, the build isn’t good, it’s superior! I look at it from a guy just getting into modular, although I have been doing synths for a long time, this is new and exciting to me and I believe many. First it’s not fair to compare a sequencer that cost’s as much as the crave to the one on the the crave. Second, yes the keypad sucks, but there is one! Next the patching capabilities are as far as I want to take them. I have a K2, another great deal from Behringer and the combo is fun as hell! Plus I have patchable effects from Dreadbox that really take the whole thing to another level. Am I going to create whole songs from it? No, but that’s not the purpose of it although it is an idea maker. I personally love the crave, but it is exactly what I wanted for the purpose I wanted for! Just my Humble opinion. Great video though, I subscribed so don’t disappoint! Lol Peace

It does not look 90's. Back then, the designs were way uglier. In the 90s and zero years, it was mostly cheap grey, blue, black or purple plastic in goofy shapes that we thought looked futuristic. The interfaces were mostly buttons, if not only buttons. The look of this thing is a LOT better looking than 90s gear.

maan..this synth is awesome..especially for its price! buying or selling it is not a big thing, so this video title sounds like an offence..you should regret you sold it because it would play perfectly together with Neutron..btw. Neutron is no replacement for the Crave..these are just different synths..

point 2; design. It looks kinda cool, Im 45. the mic live looks like fossil.the op-z, some forgotten playstation one add-on. the difference? one feels authentic, the other is cheap garage sale tv remote.

OMG, cheap garage sale tv remote - it's such a good description of the OP-Z xD I still love my OP-Z anyway, but now I'll always be thinking about a tv remote after your comment :)

It's a entry-level low-cost entry to modular synth for the price and since it has the same layout for a similar Moog unit interests me. You are not a beginner I so let not kill someone else grove, should have looked into it more before you spent your money for it.

One of the worst reviews I have seen so far, the main point that is being missed is just look at what you get for the price and then start from there.

I automatically stop watching synth reviews when the complain no FX! If you don’t have external FX your not a serious musician and the last thing they should ever say is it’s not professional feeling. The Crave is an excellent synth. You just don’t know how to use it.
