Of course not. You see, JB is a God-fearing Christian and therefore, he could never have influenced/encouraged Josh's behavior in any way (even tho he probably did by ignoring it). Rules for thee, not for me is the standard and part of why I think these kinds of fundamentalist Christian groups need to be called out as the threat they are. They can dress it up pretty, but when you get to the heart of it, they're fine with creating something out of The Handmaid's Tale.

To be fair no Christian does claim perfect personal virtue.In fact Christians hold the opposite beleif that they in fact "... fallen short Of God's glory" and that is the very reason they need God. As to calling out others shortcomings when one doe not live up to those standards personally , well that is hypocrisy and we are all guilty of that at one time or another. Her sister came out and said her and Michelle used to be close. Her sister is a lesbian and since Michelle has been with Jim Bob the molester she doesn’t talk to her family anymore. I always say Michelle as a woman who made a huge mistake and is stuck. She’s been brainwashed. As a woman it’s my bad judgment call when I feel sympathy for other women like Michelle. She looks dead in her eyes and she always has. She looks devoid of any emotion especially with her children. You can see it. Her face to me says “eww I fucked up.” Then after it came out that Josh molested his sisters and Michelle basically victim blamed her daughters I knew she was to far gone. It made me physically sick seeing her daughters trying to justify Josh’s disgusting behavior in that interview. I just wanted to hug them all and reassure them it wasn’t their faults. Michelle failed protecting her daughters from her predator son. Let’s keep it a buck what Josh did is a learned behavior. Someone taught him that and I believe it was Jim Bob who did. I can’t prove it but it’s a gut feeling. I tried holding out hope for Michelle but she’s so god damned brainwashed she’ll never come out of it. I weep for Michelle as well even though I shouldn’t because she’s spoken ill about her lesbian sister and family and I’m a lesbian myself.

I always wondered why Jimboob and Michelle favored Josh. It didn't make sense to me because in my culture, the eldest child is always held with greater responsibility and expectations. It makes total sense now, knowing he was the only child for the first few years, where as his other sibblings barely had room inbetween to bond with the parents. They really really bonded with Josh, have a stronger emotional attachment and idealize a version of him they remember in their found young days of newly being married. Imagine remembering the beautiful lovely newly wed days, and seeing those memories under the lens of the realization that the person who your child became was a monster. But their attitude towards accommodating him, appeasing him, never holding him responsible has made him who he is today, a man in jail for CSAM. I don't think they will ever admit this.

"Jim Boob" and Michelle favored Josh, because he's the oldest and the first-born son, which is NOT unusual in patriarchal environments! Because of their parents' stupidity, ALL 19 children are having more problems as adults - especially Josh!

My parents also come from roughly that generation and a kind of conservative background, also white, I think there is something about the first child being a son. Carrying on your family name, projecting that they’ll be like the dad, it’s the first baby so it’s the first time they experience parenthood, like you said they spent the most time alone with him. I believe they had him on a pedestal.

It's so sad how Michelle was obviously overwhelmed and couldn't handle all their kids, but instead of stopping she made her oldest daughters sister-moms. If you do another part there's a scene when Josie has a seizure, the parents aren't home and Jana is the one to handle everything (with support from the recording crew), you can see she's terrified. By a point in the show is obvious she's the one who raised the youngest kids, even her closest sisters see her as an authority.

After listening to this well researched presentation, I do have a level of sympathy for Michelle which I will never have for Jim Bob. Michelle went from a nice, normal life to what turned into a nightmare, IMO. Her parents did seem to overindulge her a bit. Michelle didn't cook, didn't clean, didn't have much for responsibilities etc. Jim Bob got a hold of her and in a sense her life got ruined. Jim Bob's religious fanatasism took over her life. I think he wanted her and drew her in with the religious talk. I think she did fall in love with him, to her detriment. If Michelle would have married a nice, regular guy and had 2 or 3 kids, imagine how different her life could have been. Now Michelle is known worldwide for producing a monster of a son. I think Jim Bob putting Josh on a pedestal (and buying him all those computers where I think he first discovered the p-rn he got so addicted to) had more to do with formulating the monster than Michelle's actions did. Michelle had so many kids that she became a neglectful mother, IMO. The neglect and lack of proper supervision also seemed to contribute to Josh's predatory behavior. But I think the beginning was getting his sick ideas from the Internet. I think Jim Bob probably does love Michelle, but look what he did as the "leader" of their family. No woman should have 19 children. It literally endangered her life. If they are so against the pill other methods could have been used. One method is very cheap and can be purchased at the drug store. Obviously no chance in the world that Jim Bob would have taken responsibility for b.c. or ever used it. The story of this family is very sad and I hope others can learn from it. If it can turn even one family away from the sick IBLP lifestyle, this story is worth telling. Thank you for your hard work on this documentary.

Making myself sick with such guilt and anxiety that I couldn’t sleep at night as a toddler. All of that for just lying to my very angry and emotionally abusive ex aunt about who kicked a ball into a rose bush. I can’t imagine why these acts are used to make the children think they have committed the ultimate sin. Children who cannot grasp that their small mistakes do not effect the rest of their lives. This along with Sunday school teachers telling us we were going to hell and a whole host of sexual misconduct on the part of certain church leaders. Having suffered parentification myself, this particular abuse is really hard to watch. It's really hard as an adult when you have not been taught to have boundaries, to care for yourself, to always give beyond exhaustion for the sake of others. As humans, we can develop "warped" ideas on how we think life should be, and Bill Gothard, Warren Jeffs, and the late David Koresh are perfect examples of that! To me it is obvious Josh enjoyed a much better childhood than his siblings, especially his sisters. Seems like he is the only child that had a great relationship with his parents. I can’t help but feel empathy for Michelle, that she felt that she had to put her physical and mental health on the line in order to satisfy an extreme religious ideology. She and Jim Bob have denied that they are Quivverful, but it’s evident that that was an ideology that they fell into, probably out of guilt and fear from using birth control. The Quivverful movement is distinct because it looks to “redeem the culture” by populating the earth with many godly children and, ultimately, have political domination. There’s no biblical basis for this because Jesus did not come to establish a political kingdom, He came to establish His heavenly kingdom. The other aspect is superimposed gender roles that mirrors the culture of Old Testament times. The Duggars are Independent Baptists which believe they were the first century church that stayed underground for hundreds of years before making its way to America and was not part of the Protestant reformation, which is dubious. I feel that Jim Bob and Michelle let themselves be misguided by their church and the IBLP into a life that they wouldn’t have chosen otherwise. Great video, thank you 😊

I was raised in a Christian household and I've spent a lot of time around Christian people. In my experience most are just regular folks trying to live their lives. I have very occasionally come across people who present themselves the way that the Duggars do and I've always found it very unsettling. There is just something almost sinister about the way that they try to appear as these perfect, sweet as syrup, completely innocent people. And to me I've always felt like if you have to put on that kind of a mask in public there has to be something going on underneath that you are desperately trying to hide. I think that what came out about Josh Duggar is probably just the tip of the iceberg of dark secrets going on with this family.

I think that The Duggars absolutely refused and refuse to still admit that having all those children created huge difficulty to deal with issues for their children. They were very fortunate that none of these children were born with severe medical issues or handicaps. I did the research at the time they had their first issues with Josh they had 15 kids they were dealing with and 5 of them were under the age of 5. They had this agenda to prove that you can have the perfect family with all these kids and I'm glad that their true colors are starting to show. I hope that families like this with their beliefs are learning a little lesson. Maybe you shouldn't have nineteen kids, maybe you need to stop enabling horrid behavior. My family said, ‘he just wouldn’t leave her alone’. Meaning he demanded sex even tho she was weak and frail. He basically killed her thru forced sex and childbirth. The Duggars had serious communication problems BEFORE they got rid of their cable and TV! You can't blame electronics for bad behavior! I learned that Japan has more violent programming than in America, but their crime rate is MUCH lower!

What people need to understand is that the control over NO TV growing up was NOT about the evils of the world, but it was so that the children didn't learn how most people lived. They didn't learn they had control about who touched you and that you had the right to saI y NO if you did NOT like someone touching you! I grew up in a similar household, minus the 19 kids. I was NOT taught about boundaries or that I had the right to say NO to certain people touching me. I was taught just like the Duggars to ALWAYS have a smile on their face no matter HOW bad it was at home. I was told to NEVER tell anyone what was going on at home. From the time I was a toddler I was taught what happened at home "stayed at home"! When my Dad lost his job and we had NO food in the house I got in severe trouble for being honest that we had no food at the house. Given I was taught to tell the truth I could not understand why when we are taught to never lie why I couldn't be truthful when the youth pastor asked if we had enough food to eat. It keeps a child on eggshells constantly trying to figure out what is OK to be truthful about and what isn't! I knew from the very first special Josh was a predator. When you grow up being sexually abused you just have a 6th sense from other perps. I hate being right, but Josh had a major creep factor about him! I just wish he was going away for longer to give his young children time to age. Sadly I believe he has already abused some of them!

Im sorry to hear what happened to you. Im so angry that happened to you. Hope are now safe? This sums up the crutch of why i left the religion, purity culture is beyond disgusting and unhealthy and only breeds people like josh. I always got the ick from Josh as well, it was his smug smile. I remember one particular episode where there cousin Amy visited and she brought her then boyfriend, and they are judging her HARD for mabe trying to kiss him. I dont even know if she had, but even the IDEA of consensual kissing a boy was so triggering for them and Josh was talking about how she had a responsibility to god to be 'pure' all with a smirk on his face.

Well done, another great and insightful video yet again. What I love is that you take time to make content. There’s such a push on KZbin nowadays to be a production machine and to continually push out content regardless of quality. These videos really go against the grain of that expectation, and even though there’s a longer period between some uploads, they’re so much better for the time and care that’s been taken. Keep up the good work 👍

I grew up in it and was controlled by fear .... it wasnt until a few years ago, around my 36th birthday that i was diagnosed with cptsd after two of my brothers committed su.cide. I spent so many years thinking i was a bad person going to hell and stumbling through life when the answer was actually in the bible all along: "train up a child in the way they should go and when they are old, they will not depart from it ..." i was trained up to believe i was born a sinner and what qualified as sin in our home was whatever suited my parents at any given time. I was given no guidance for living or encouraged in anything i enjoyed .... even a failing grade, instead of helping us was a cause for a beating with either a switch (stick) or a belt. While i have my own personal relationship with the bible and with God, i am not involved in religion today .... just extensive therapy.
@LisaKoffler

K C, you're extremely lucky! Religion teaches people to be God-fearing, but they don't have to fear God in such a way that EVERYTHING is considered "sinful!" Extensive therapy is the best thing to help undo the damage your parents caused you!
