My first job was a sanitary pad promoter in watsons many years ago. Every single day the staff(both genders) and customers(aunties) will ask me why I take up this embarrassing job, I am better off doing other things, why I promote such 'dirty' stuff, etc. It was so toxic that I couldn't take it after 1 week. It is so sad that the society still view it this way. I remember taking the job up gladly, wanting to promote this brand of necessity that works. But I felt so betrayed by my own people. 😔 Thank you thirsty sisters for this empowering podcast and affirming me that what I did was not anything to be ashamed of.

I think part of why the local series 复仇女王 was so popular + refreshing is because the plot not only portrayed women as strong and independent, it zoomed into the lives of such a variety of women who are not “domestic goddess” but instead, women who can “加班” and have respectable careers. It was a show that was ahead of times!

I think it’s great to start to break out of the narrative that society and history has insidiously put us in! but actually wouldn’t it be even better for us to use pronouns like “they” more commonly? Recently i attended a talk in my company regarding lgbt inclusion at the workplace and the way we assume that people are straight is also similarly, very insidious unless we also start to educate ourselves and see things in this new lens & make a conscious effort to break out of it. When i attended that talk i was also like quite mindblown in a similar way as Sylvia was lol!!

This kind of views against women being inferior/lesser beings?? will definitely take a few more generations to die down. Whatever Singapore media portrays is mostly what the older generation thought of women that passed down. It is hard being who you want to be and empower what you believe in as a women in Singapore. I have very bad experiences with more old people (regardless of gender) than younger men in Singapore because it's usually the elders who pass their views down to their kids. When I was a teenager long time ago, I was called out for wearing sports shorts by an elderly man 20 metres away considered too short for him. When a family member found a sex toy of mine (I am an adult), I was considered a slut who had casual sex frequently even though it was clearly untrue and there was no evidence to back that up. That's why its important for the younger generation now to stop these stereotypes and bring up their future children with an open mind. :)

I actually kinda like that media is portraying such stereotypes of females being feminine and domestic-bound and a "decoration" for luxury car. Because when I finally jump in to fix the toilet, start up my own successful business and buy my own car, it makes the "surprise factor" more *wow!* Since women are not expected to do/have all that, it's more amazing to see what we can actually do in reality.

I've always think those who are able to think/ break "out of the matrix" are people who are "ahead of our time" because our thinking is more advanced and forward while the people in the present doesn't necessarily understand/ still closed minded. Take the Avengers movie for example, there was a scene showing women empowerment where all female heroes came together and people weren't very happy about it or were making fun of it but it was different for me, I felt proud and happy for the actresses being able to get to that stage of progress in Hollywood and are actually making a difference. I feel every movement (those that doesn't put anyone in harm whatsoever) is great for moving forward to a better future where everyone is truly comfortable and happy without being feared of being different.

Hearing this, I'm very thankful for my father that raised me as a single parent, he'd never push the norm feminine toys or activities on me and rather he nurtured me to my interest. So while I learned cooking and piano, I'm also a black belt in Taekwondo and plays basketball.

there has definitely been more women empowerment in media in recent years! while this progress is encouraging, it really reminds us how much is already entrenched in our societies & our cultures. perhaps in korean dramas, we tend to applaud shows with strong women empowerment (search www is one i recently chanced upon) but also the fact that we really need to applaud them so much also shows how rare they are. our education is so different as well. in schools, generally, girls have higher grades / lower rates of dropping out globally but this translates to a pay gap with women earning less (and having to pay more because products tagged 'female' costs more) and taking on domestic roles. and when we're young - girls get praised for being mature, quiet, obedient but boys are acknowledged for being strong and active which is what really reinforced the stereotype. media & education can be scary. thank you for sharing about this!

the segment at 14:42 is a very touchy situation. Wouldnt you agree that if "Mr Muscle" was called Mrs toilet cleaner or something, couldn't that also be interpreted as females needing to take care of the house as in like adhering to the stereotype of females being stay-at-home wives? what would your take be on this?
@_linggg
@_linggg 3 жыл бұрын
They could have just changed it to Ms Muscle and that would be good enough, it empowers women and shows that women are equally strong too. Or like Mr Toilet Cleaner (going by your example), to break that stereotype of females needing to take care of the house. Also, I remember the Mr Muscle ad literally being a random muscled dude in a superhero costume coming to the house of a lady to help her with her cleaning problems, and he actually doesn't even do anything aside from giving the bottle of cleaning solution to the lady. In this case it seems like the brand is still portraying that women need men to come and "rescue" them, which isn't necessarily true

It’s because the media is made up of businesses and they are mainly interesting in profits which mean they are inclined to portray and appeal to social norm which then reinforces these social norms, so it’s kind of a vicious cycle sadly and imo it’s the younger generations over time that bring in newer ideas of social norm and way of life so it’s a really gradual thing that might happen after many years to come~

Media portrayal is simply the reflection of the true society. If they produce a show otherwise viewers say it’s 不真实. I’m a super out-of-line woman whom no guys ever take seriously simply because I don’t dress up. I don’t put on make up. I don’t do my eyebrows. I mean, why should I? I am not going to change my image just to break that single cycle. Guys’ general expectation on women, is why we live day by day trying to upkeep an acceptable image. While we are perfectly fine even if our men are balding or tummy bulging.

Yes, gender inequality still happens when I was young. But I'm good with now as no longer staying with my family currently. A little freedom for me :) But I think is much better now as long parents give equal treatment to the children. Love to watch from youtube instead of podcast so that could see Sylvia and Nina's expression

Agree with a lot of what the you are saying. But the truth is traditional media is dying. Not sure if I see anyone knows any Zoomers here watch tv? The ads that make rise to NOC and the other online platforms are very different. It’s more product placement. Product focused etc. In terms of Mr Muscle just a product name la… it’s like Mama Lemon? Equivalent of Mr Muscle is Duck duck? So we want to say only ducks can save us? Lol… chill chill

Coz in reality gender equality is still not reflected properly. My mother always told me MUST learn how to cook properly and do housework properly. If not next time your husband will run away and find another woman. Or you must give birth no matter what or your husband will run away. Why girl must do this kind of thing?

gen z they are more open and vocals, think they don't even bother about female having to cook or take care of babies, it should be balance , but spore we are still traditional with asian values, the baby still bear the surname of dad as in the past babies and women are all property of men, but now women are rising to the mark and stars like Dua lipa , her songs don't victimize women but empower them , each person is unique in their own way if boys like ballet or women like wushu they should be able to do what they like it shouldn't be view as stereotype, I purchase ninja turtle when I was young I thank my parents for allowing me to buy wat I want and not wat girls should play, no matter wat the girls do, people are there to make comment 🤷

I think it is not just the media industries that objectify women, even within most of our asian households upbringing is that man holds a much more important role in the family compared to women. Man is always the head and decision maker, regardless of their capabilities. PS: Strangely, most of the vulgar words are always about women.

I really doubt there's any significant gender gap in singapore today. Girls r doing much better than boys academically. And i dont see my girl friends do household chores any better than the guys. Infact most of my guy friends cook for their wife, clean the house, clean the toilet etc. And their wives r also earning more than them. From what i see in singapore, younger generation esp, we r pretty equal.

The older ladies in our society (the target customers) are more likely to look at Mr Muscle than Ms Steady (a good looking fit lady which may make them feel worse about their bodies). Which is why in many very expensive female perfume adverts always got very sexy muscle men. Which also explains the very 'off' reason of putting sexy women in expensive car adverts

A lot of these standards are also imposed by women. So perhaps more sensitivity before playing the blame game on the other gender would be more reasonable. It’s also our fault as women for buying into what is today’s beauty standards. We don’t deserve to be coddled either. Independence is also part of our responsibility.
