I fitted one of these last summer, went from a dribble of a shower to one of the best I've had! Nice to be able to monitor the incoming pressure too as we seem to have intermittent issues, this gives us an emergency back-up during those times too. Stuart Turner were very helpful in speccing the system.

It all depends on your water pressure coming into the house. If your water pressure is bordering 2.0 bar or under, then you would need a Mainsboost charger to boost and this would need electricity.

Great video James. I have recently had a combi installed and to be honest I expected more pressure from the taps. When I run a hot tap then run a cold tap the hot tap slows down. Which I understand now as they both come from the same supply. Anyway, I really like the idea of these accumulators as I now have no tanks at all in the house so have room for one. James or anybody, what should I budget to have one installed. Bit of info, mains water comes into the kitchen, combi also in the kitchen, accumulator would need to go in the loft.

Hi, what is the minimum flow rate needed for the pump to kick in? Mine is only 4 litres a minute. Would that work? Thanks mate!
@KStewart-th4sk4 жыл бұрын
That tank is basically an accumulator. Versions of it (much heavier/thicker metal of course) are used in hydraulic systems as well, except an inert gas like NITROGEN must be used in the bladder above the water, instead of air. What about the amount of time other taps are open if they are all open at once? Can this keep up with the amount of flow being used; there must be a time limit at which it couldn't keep up with the amount of water being used?
@gap99924 жыл бұрын
Very interesting! So the regulated static pressure is less than the original unregulated static pressure but the tank stores pressure which increases the dynamic pressure when more outlets are opened and sustains it? If you have only one outlet open, say a shower, will the lower regulated static pressure result in a lower flow to it? What defines how long the boosted dynamic pressure will last?? My incoming main is in the garage. Could I add one of these in the garage immediately after the main stopcock If my questions reveal a total lack of understanding there is a reason for that.......LOL
@StuartTurnerLtdHenleyonThames4 жыл бұрын
These systems often get installed in garages, so yes you could set it up in there. How long the boosted supply lasts really depends on the size of the system and it's use. You can also complete a site survey form to get a bespoke recommendation from one of our experts. You'll find a link to the survey and details on the whole range here: www.stuart-turner.co.uk/our-products/mainsboost

Great video, thanks. I just have to the same question as a couple of others on here... and that is... what is the length of time that an accumulator can keep up the pressure ? (Obviously this will depend to a degree on size of accumulator but we have enough space for one about 1500 tall). I have a job to do to convert from gravity system where currently nothing is pumped, original plan was to upgrade to a new heat only boiler and a larger lagged cylinder and keep the decent sized CWST and add a 2.0 bar shower pump but I’m contemplating this approach instead, though I’m concerned that the ‘accumilated’ pressure will die off over ten mins. There is 3.5 bar standing pressure but I never like to rely on the fact that this will always be the case (that’s why I don’t really like unvented installs) any feed back would be appreciated. Thanks. Tom.

Hiya thanks for the vid, good info, I am not a plumber but I do understand the basic principles of how this system works, what you don't explain is how long this extra water storage lasts for, while in use, for instance if the washing machine is on, the toilet as been flushed and someone is in the shower how long would it last before the extra water pressure is all used up? please don't say how long is a piece of string, it depends on how many items are drawing water etc, for instance if the expansion tank roughly holds 60L and the pressure is 3bar how long would it take to use that amount of water and the old pressure would be back to normal, the reason I ask is that I have a large family and my shower is on constantly for at least 90 minutes or more each morning, I'm not sure that this device would be of any benefit to me. thanks in advance for any reply.

Hi @plumberparts - great video! We're on an unvented system and looking to get one of these installed. Couple of questions - 1. Does it make a difference where the vessel is installed? We're hovering around 2 bar on our system with the cylinder in the loft, presumably that'll be a bit lower up in the loft? Would that be sufficient 2. Is there any difference between the Stuart Turner Mainsboost and other accumulator vessels in principle or is it just a brand? Thank you!
@moskaski4 жыл бұрын
Surely this is a problem caused by British homes being designed for a conventional hot water system. We've all been pushed to remove the tanks and install combi boilers, only to find we don't have the pressure to supply all of our appliances. How long can this tank maintain the pressure/how much can it hold?
@craigwatson76924 жыл бұрын
If your been pushed to remove your tanks and fit a combi when your incoming supply/system/ hot water demand isnt suited for a combi then that is a mistake of the plumber who recommended it. And how much the tank holds and maintains pressure depends on the model fitted, they come in a variety of sizes to suite any requirement.
@moskaski4 жыл бұрын
@@craigwatson7692I am not talking about myself, as a Northern Irish man, I know that the most practical heating setup is a conventional one, unless I live in a one bedroom flat, bit having lived on the mainland, where you guys love the old combi, pretty much every property has one, whether it is the most practical setup or not. James in my opinion would be much better suited to install such a system, or an increase in supply, rather then retrofit a tank, which will need replaced in 10 years.

Hi James, quick question. Would you recommend one of these systems or a salamander home boost pump? Its a combi system, no water tanks. Cold mains is a bit on the.. Mehh side. Only have 1 bathroom and 1 kitchen but when running a bath and a kitchen taps opened the flow drops right off. 15mm mains pipe. All the pipeworks a mess in the house atm with 3 stop cocks stashed away so I'll be ripping those out but there large stop cocks, not the small isolating valves so i don't think they would really affect flow thattt much. Keep up the excellent videos mate, good to see you and Roger working together over on skill builders channel too 👍🏼

I would also like to know this as Im on a 15mm mains and the bathroom struggles, I also dont have room for this size of tank. so would like to know my options
@craigwatson76924 жыл бұрын
Personally if you have the room for it, mainsboost from stuart Turner is a better option, The salamander is ok but they are limited to 12 litres of water per minute, which is ok but not great, as with any pump, they are noisy, require a power supply and they can fail at any time. The mainsboost though has no moving parts so less to go wrong, they make no noise, require no power supply and have no restrictions on flow rates. Before you jump to getting one though, look at why you have poor flow, definitely sort the 3 stop taps out, countless times I've been to houses where a new stop tap is fitted above the main one only to find the main tap has snapped and only turned half way on. Also check the boundary stop tap is fully on. Forgot to add, the mainsboost is only suitable if your static pressure is above 2bar so best get that tested too
@craigwatson76924 жыл бұрын
@@stuwoac have a look on stuart Turner's website, they offer pumped mainsboost systems designed to fit within a kitchen unit. Yes you need power supply and they are noisy but you get a much better flow rate than what you get with the salamander. But before you get something like this fitted, check for reasons why you have poor flow rates as mentioned in my comment above.
@ep91monster4 жыл бұрын
@@craigwatson7692 cheers for the reply buddy, the plumbing in this house is a nightmare to be honest so first port of call is to remove all these unnecessary stop taps and see if flow improves. I highly doubt it will, but before i jump into getting one of these systems i will give it a test. Basic plumbing is fine with me but when it comes to systems like this, i prefer to get plumbers insight before i throw money down the drain. Plasterings my thing lol. I can see the benefit of the salamander being that its just a small unit i can hide easy, but as you say, its obviously an electric pump so will fail sooner than a mechanical diaphragm system like this stuart turner. Luckily i could fit one up in the loft which is totally unused atm. First thing i thought of was the pavement tap half closed but it's fully open. I was hoping for an easy fix there but, never the way is it 😂
