This is a great video. People like myself who are old school guitar players and play through tube amps and huge pedalboards need to know this. Because this unit DOES sound great. But there is that little something going on that you can't put your finger on... Well you just put my finger on it and now I feel like I could take this lightweight little board to a gig and sound great. I can't even count the times I've lugged a huge 412 and 100 watt tube head to outdoor gigs. Thank you Paul. You are a true tone master 🤘🏻🤘🏻

@@Yelbomsirhc1 well man, since this comment I have traded away the GX100. I realized that I am strictly a tube amp guy and while I still have my huge hundred watt heads and 412 cabs, I did go out and buy a couple later, lower wattage tube amps and a really good 212. Life isn't quite so bad

What I love about the Boss EQ-200 and the GT/GX products is that you can have 4 EQs in one chain. So I like to have two after the OD pedals but before the amp, and the other two after the amp and modulation, but before the delay/reverb. With each pair of two, I set one to enhance the low end, and one for the high end frequencies. That way I can increase or decrease the frequencies as needed for each guitar/amp combination I am using, and for any pedal combinations before or after the amp as well.
@moe456732 жыл бұрын
Awesome video. I tend to do similar but I rarely A/B the two like you have. And yeah, the final sound definitely sounds punchier and will sit way better in a mix.

Hi Paul, Selva here from India..just discoverd your channel and man your knowledge on the gear and approach to tone shaping is out of the world. I have learnt a lot in the last two days just watching few of these videos. I am basically an amp guy myself and i did try my hands on processor but then I could never get around the fizz or the the sound being too sterile which put me off. Now looking at it feels like I was not educated enough on tone shaping or working with a processor. I recently picked the Bluguitar Iridium (thats a killer amp in pedal platform) and have a huge pedal board but it wouldnt hurt having this Boss GX-100 for places where I dont have to carry my entire gear. Thanks, great channel indeed.

First of all, thank you for your clear explanation. I have also had the GX-100 for a while, but first used it mainly as an effects processor together with a tube amplifier: 4 cable method. Lately I've been playing via headphones via my MacBook pro model 2021. And then using the amps and the speaker simulation in the Gx-100. However, I connected these via USB. Then I have a stereo signal with effect and a "stereo" without signal treatment. In your video and also in other videos I see that you use the line-out on the left and right. Are there any advantages compared to USB use? Because then the analogue-to-digital conversion takes place in the audio interface. Compared to the USB method, the signal is then converted twice. Can you explain the advantage of one method versus the other?

Awesome video Paul, thanks a lot for the info. I’m wondering, is there any reason in particular behind putting the EQ right after the amp? Given that the modeler is what is getting all those unwanted frequencies, would it work if you put the EQ first in the chain, to “clean up” the frequencies right away? Or, on the contrary, would it work to have those low and high cuts set in the global EQ of the unit, so it applies to all your patches? I’m very curious to know your thoughts on these two questions 🙂

I am very confused why you didn't mention what type of speaker you were going through. A guitar amplifier is what these pedals are set up for so additional adjustment is just making your guitar darker. I disagree that the EQ sounds are better. They sound darker to my ears and they will disappear in a band mix far easier. I don't actually even see this making sense for professional recording either given that post-processing would take place and for live gigs, is the message that boss set this up in correctly for live gigs from the factory? I don't understand.
@jamesearl38927 күн бұрын
No they’re not. They’re set up for direct recording or direct to board live performance. A small fraction of people playing a GX-100, and probably NO ONE using amp models, are going into a tube amp with this thing. 😂
@GearSounds27 күн бұрын
@@jamesearl389 That is incorrect, despite what the settings say. If you set it for "tube amp" it sounds awful and this is confirmed online. That is exactly why videos say to add an output EQ to "help it out". Really it is just putting lipstick on a pig though. I can assure you, a large chunk of people are playing the GX-10 and GX-100 as they are very popular and MOST of them are going into tube amps. This pedal is $400 for the MINI ONE. No one spending that much is sending it through an FRFR cab. This is because Boss's cabinet sim tech is far behind neural DSP and two notes. I hope that helps. Don't always buy into the marketing hype or what the manual says is the correct setting.
